The chosen approach is a comparative study of two organizations providing seeds to farmers in India: on one side Bayer CropScience Ltd. (India), which promotes the use of hybrid, genetically modified (GM) crops and chemical pesticides; and on the other side Navdanya, which turns to the preservation and development of traditional seeds and practices. The primary aim of this research is to establish a clear link between belief systems and economic ecological practices. From this link, this research proposes a comparison of the values that have a significant effect on Navdanya’s inner workings and economic endeavors to values ruling over Bayer India in order to inform societal transitions towards sustainable economic models. This thesis concludes that Bayer’s episteme is characterized by its definition of progress as growth, and its co-dependence in equilibrium between shareholders and consumers that are more widely set in the Modern episteme’s anthropocentrism and objectification of the ‘other’. Navdanya’s episteme is characterized by a sacred understanding of biodiversity and an attempt to recenter economies towards women and nature in the idea that their creations is merely unpaid work upon which the growth paradigm relies. The two organizations are set in a polarizing tension rooted in the core beliefs of both paradigms.Show less
This thesis examines the paintings of Henry Scott Tuke (1858-1929) against the backdrop of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, exploring how his depictions of naked youths at the British seaside...Show moreThis thesis examines the paintings of Henry Scott Tuke (1858-1929) against the backdrop of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, exploring how his depictions of naked youths at the British seaside navigated and subverted dominant cultural narratives of gender and sexuality. The study employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating the lens of “the queer gaze,” multiple social-historical contexts in relation to the seaside, and critical reception. The first chapter delves into Tuke's portrayal of naked youths, revealing layers of homoerotic desire and voyeurism. Through visual analysis, Tuke's paintings are shown to evoke both childhood innocence and charged intimacy, inviting viewers to question and interpret the subtle sensuality within them. The second chapter examines the significance of the British seaside in Tuke's work, highlighting its idealized portrayal as a utopia of leisure and a masculine homosocial space. The final chapter explores the reception of Tuke's paintings during his lifetime and in current perspectives, revealing a nuanced tension between tradition and innovation in both style and subject. Tuke's depictions of naked youths at the beach occupy a liminal space between convention and novelty, both accepted by the critics of his time as well as the Royal Academy and celebrated by queer fringe groups. Overall, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of Tuke's work while shedding light on broader discussions surrounding the representation of gender and sexuality in art history.Show less

Dit liveblog zou het eerste blijken in een reeks dagelijkse liveblogs die tot op heden onafgebroken is. Net als The Guardian maken talloze nieuwsmedia in de berichtgeving over de Russische invasie gebruik van het langlopende liveblog, ook wel slowblog genoemd. Een slowblog heeft alle kenmerken van een liveblog, maar er zijn ook verschillen. In de wetenschappelijke literatuur wordt nog geen onderscheid gemaakt tussen live- en slowblogs; er wordt enkel gesproken over liveblogs. In dit exploratieve onderzoek worden door middel van een kwalitatieve inhoudsanalyse volgens de methode van Biber & Conrad (2019) antwoord gegeven op de vraag: wat zijn verschillen tussen liveblogs en slowblogs in register, genre en stijl? Twee samengestelde slowblogs worden vergeleken met een samengesteld liveblog, waarbij verschillen worden aangetroffen op het gebied van fragmentatie, bronverwijzing, en het gebruik van werkwoordstijden, die worden verklaard aan de hand van de communicatieve doelen die de twee soorten liveblogs dienen. Dit onderzoek kan worden gebruikt als leidraad voor meer vergelijkend onderzoek, en kan door middel van interviews worden getoetst aan de journalistieke praktijk.Show less

A small but growing body of literature argues financialisation and related processes of marketisation and neoliberalisation to be at the core of the decline - or even the end - of the model. This thesis looks at the cases of Denmark and Norway between 2008 and 2021 in order to determine the extent to which we can still speak of a Nordic model of welfare. A set of indicators is introduced for each of three defining features of the model: universalism, decommodification and government commitment to full employment. Findings indicate that, though the system has weakened in some parts, it would be undue to speak of a strong decline of the Nordic model for the given period of time, let alone the end of it.Show less

Europe is at the forefront of global efforts to combat climate change, most notably with the EU Green Deal, and often proclaims its ambition to be the world’s green leader. However, scholars have raised concerns with regards to the dark side of Europe’s green policies, as they may actually perpetuate colonial relations and harm marginalized communities. This thesis, therefore, will look at three types of critiques, each being strands of the environmental justice theory, namely i. green colonialism, ii. green hypocrisy and iii. carbon colonialism. Each strand will be analyzed through a case study, using both evidence from authorities as well as academic literature. Through the examination of these case studies, this thesis will argue that the concerns regarding Europe’s green transition are valid, particularity showing an absence of responsibly taken by Europe in addressing these critiques. As Europe’s core values are founded upon justice and equality, it becomes crucial to address these concerns adequately, in order to make its green transition truly ‘just’.Show less

Between these years and the...Show moreIn 1895, the Dutch Social Democratic Workers’ Party (SDAP) convened for its first party conference. Two years later, the first SDAP members were elected to Parliament. Between these years and the Second World War, the SDAP transitioned from a party with revolutionary aspirations to a fully normalized parliamentary entity. This thesis studies the SDAP’s assembly culture (vergadercultuur) in both the House of Representatives and their own party conferences. The first part of the thesis utilizes a combination of traditional and innovative digital methodologies to demonstrate that the normalisation of the position of the SDAP in the House of Representatives peaked in the mid-1920s. The second part of the thesis explores the development of the internal assembly culture of the SDAP, focusing on the role of the chairperson, procedures, time management, and usage of ‘persoonlijke feiten’, a phenomenon originating from Parliament. This section shows that while the internal assembly culture of the SDAP matured in many respects, this process was non-linear in many other respects, rendering the metaphor of maturation insufficient.Show less

This thesis is an analysis of the aromatics industries in the Ancient Near East in the 3rd millennium BCE with a particular focus on the records from the archive of the e2-mi2 ("House of the Woman"...Show moreThis thesis is an analysis of the aromatics industries in the Ancient Near East in the 3rd millennium BCE with a particular focus on the records from the archive of the e2-mi2 ("House of the Woman") in Girsu (modern Tello). The topic of aromatics production, the people involved in it, and the materials used has been studied extensively through the records of later periods (Ur III onwards), but earlier sources have largely been unused, citing their relative scarcity as a reason. In this sense, this thesis collects the earlier sources and makes them available for discussion. The main research questions are: who were the people involved in the aromatics production in Girsu? What were their tasks other than making scented substances? To what extent are the sources of Girsu representative in a broader context? The methods used are those of social history. A corpus of sources is presented and analyzed, with particular emphasis on the people's social status, activities, and the way in which the documentary practices of Ancient Mesopotamia shape our knowledge about this period. The result is a description of diverse practices, with locally specific characteristics, nonetheless all being a part of a wider, shared tradition of production and use of aromatics.Show less

Nederlanders met een Marokkaanse achtergrond...Show moreSinds de moord op filmmaker Theo van Gogh wordt de representatie van Marokkaanse Nederlanders in nieuwsmedia gekenmerkt door negatieve stereotyperingen. Nederlanders met een Marokkaanse achtergrond worden neergezet als de onbekende ander en worden met regelmaat in een verdachtenrol geschoven. Onderzoek bevestigt dat deze bevolkingsgroep bovendien niet wordt onderscheiden van de islam. Migranten uit landen met een moslimmeerderheid worden geracialiseerd door de toekenning van statische en karakteristieke eigenschappen waaronder gewelddadigheid en vrouwonvriendelijkheid. Sinds de moord op Van Gogh worden deze discoursen ook in misdaadverslaggeving geïdentificeerd. Het podcastsmedium is belangrijk nieuw terrein voor misdaadverslaggeving. Vooral producties over waargebeurde misdaad zijn razend populair. Gezien de prominentie van Marokkaanse Nederlanders in debatten over criminaliteit is het niet verrassend dat deze groep centraal staat in veel Nederlandstalige podcasts. Onderzoek naar dit medium wijst uit dat de affordances ruimte bieden voor kritische reflectie. Onder andere de representatie van stemmen en de laagdrempeligheid van het medium worden in de literatuur als veelbelovend beschreven. Op basis van de historische representatie van Marokkaanse Nederlanders in nieuwsmedia en de kritische potentie van het podcastmedium is de volgende onderzoeksvraag opgesteld: Hoe worden Nederlandse verdachten met een Marokkaanse achtergrond gerepresenteerd in misdaadpodcasts in vergelijking met andere verdachten? Om deze vraag te beantwoorden zijn zes podcastafleveringen geanalyseerd aan de hand van een kritische discoursanalyse volgens een aangepast stappenplan van Carvalho (2008). De centrale actoren in deze afleveringen zijn verdachten met en zonder migratieachtergrond. In de resultaten wordt de representatie van deze actoren met elkaar vergeleken. De resultaten wijzen de ruimte die verdachten krijgen om hun verhaal te doen en de manier waarop ze als ‘ander’ worden gerepresenteerd, eerder gerelateerd lijkt aan de aanwezigheid van de journalist in het verhaal dan aan hun afkomst. Hoewel de verdachten ongeacht hun afkomst als onbekende ‘ander’ worden gerepresenteerd, stuit dit onderzoek wel op verschillen in verklaringen voor crimineel gedrag. De relatie tussen afkomst en criminaliteit van verdachten met een Marokkaanse achtergrond wordt gepresenteerd als een oorzaak-gevolg-relatie, terwijl de criminaliteit van een verdachte zonder migratieachtergrond juist als onverwacht wordt gepresenteerd. In tegenstelling tot de literatuur blijft de islamitische achtergrond van Marokkaanse verdachten in dit onderzoek buiten beeld. Op basis van deze resultaten kan worden geconcludeerd dat de kritische potentie van podcasts nog niet overal wordt vervuld.Show less

It delves into the thematic and artistic choices of Documenta, focusing on the co-curation model spearheaded by ruangrupa and its impact on transcultural exhibitions. The analysis extends to Germany's historical context concerning Documenta and the response to People's Justice. Additionally, it highlights the influence of Indonesia's Reformasi movement on the art collectives Taring Padi and ruangrupa, shaping the narrative of Documenta Fifteen. This study probes the diverse interpretations and reactions to People's Justice in Germany, alongside the media's depiction of these cultural exchanges. It further explores the 'politics of belonging' concept by Yuval-Davis, shedding light on the complex dynamics of curating politically charged art. Hiermee zijn de clicks van een gekwantificeerd...Show moreDoor toenemende economische druk is het gebruik van audience metrics op online redacties het afgelopen decennium sterk toegenomen (Zamith, 2018). Hiermee zijn de clicks van een gekwantificeerd publiek een steeds grotere rol gaan spelen als poortwachter in het nieuwsselectie- en productieproces (Shoemaker & Vos, 2009). Dit is problematisch omdat metrics alleen het gedrag van de massa kunnen meten. De clicks worden onterecht op één lijn gelegd met de interesse van het publiek en zorgen ervoor dat de wensen van de loyale nieuwsconsument worden ondergesneeuwd (Fürst, 2020). Een traditionele focus op clicks is daarnaast onwenselijk wegens het veranderende verdienmodel van veel redacties. Door tegenvallende advertentie-inkomsten focussen zij zich steeds meer op het verwerven van abonnees of leden (Newman, 2023). Daarom doet deze studie onderzoek naar hoe metrics tegenwoordig worden ingezet door redacties om de loyale nieuwsconsument aan zich te binden. Bij vier Nederlandse kranten, de Telegraaf, het AD, de NRC en de Volkskrant, is onderzocht of en hoe loyaliteit onderdeel vormt van de doelen bij het meten van data en hoe het meten van loyaliteit in de praktijk wordt gebracht. Op de redactievloer zijn op vier lagen semigestructureerde interviews afgenomen om op te onderzoeken hoe tegen loyaliteit wordt aangekeken en wat de daadwerkelijke impact is van metrics (ook veelvuldig ‘data’ genoemd in deze studie) die om loyaliteit draaien. Bij elke krant is een online eindverantwoordelijke, een data-analist, een samensteller van de homepagina en een schrijvende redacteur geïnterviewd. Uit de interviews blijkt dat de rol van loyaliteit zeer groot is in zowel de doelstellingen als de uitvoering. Bij veel redacties ligt een grote focus op het verwerven en actief houden van abonnees. Hierdoor wordt in data-analyse het gedrag van loyale nieuwsconsumenten in bepaalde gevallen geprioriteerd boven eenmalige nieuwsconsumenten. Daarnaast wordt door redacties onderzocht hoe die nieuwsgebruiker loyaal wordt. Zo wordt het pad naar conversie (abonnementsverkoop) geanalyseerd en wordt op artikelniveau geanalyseerd waar en waarom nieuwsconsumenten afhaken. Deze kennis uit data wordt ingezet om beter aan te sluiten op publieksbehoeften. De kanttekening die moet worden geplaatst is dat, ook al verliezen de clicks terrein, beslissingen op real-time basis nog veel op die clicks gebaseerd zijn. Uit het empirische onderzoek worden twee belangrijke lessen getrokken. Ten eerste bepalen metrics allang niet meer slechts de onderwerpkeuzes, maar kunnen metrics tegenwoordig eerder de vorm van een artikel bepalen dan het onderwerp. Ten tweede hoeft de loyale nieuwsconsument niet ondergesneeuwd te raken door metrics, maar vormen metrics juist de mogelijkheid om de behoeften van die loyale nieuwsconsument te vervullen. Het onderzoek sluit af met een discussie waarin de vraag wordt gesteld hoe deze nieuwe vormen van metrics invloed hebben op de democratische functie van media.Show less

To reinvent its reputation and cater to modern needs, its tourist industry has looked towards Northern Irish cultural elements which will signify a new, safe Northern Ireland. Despite its efforts to shed its violent past, many travel to the Northern Irish capital of Belfast to learn more about The Troubles. This has created a booming mural tour tradition, in which visitors travel through the city in search of the many murals that tell the stories of the communities involved in the conflict. Northern Irish muralism has since its first use functioned to advocate for political objectives, but has since become the primary tool in advocating the political aims of the dominant ideologies: Nationalism and Unionism. The murals now hold the power to convince viewers of their ideology to create public support out of which political change can be demanded. They are thus potent political instruments, and according by whom or how they are used have significant implications for the future of Northern IrelandShow less

Currently existing studies...Show moreThis thesis examines to what extent public opinion about Syrian and Ukrainian refugees is either perpetuated or challenged by media discourse in Dutch newspaper media. Currently existing studies mainly focus on the reception and perceptions of refugees coming from the Global South. By specifically focusing on war refugees, and adding the comparative component of Ukrainian refugees, this thesis aimed to identify whether disparities that are apparent in public opinions, are also tracible in the Dutch newspapers NRC, De Telegraaf, and De Volkskrant. Dutch public opinion shows a greater support of the reception of Ukrainian refugees, than any other group of war refugees. To examine whether the latter is apparent in media discourse, this study combines two methods: Corpus Linguistics (Content Analysis) and the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA) in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). Corpus Linguistics shows the presence of three prominent themes in word usage in articles regarding both comparative cases: pronouns, locations, and times and quantities. These three themes served as a foundational base for the CDA. CDA shows a prominence of the ‘us versus them’ dichotomy in media discourse, mainly through the use of ‘othering’ language. Additionally, the presence of discussions of repatriation in case of Syrian refugees, perpetuates the disparity in support of reception of both groups of war refugees. With the contribution of academic literature, the content analysis, and critical discourse analysis, this paper concludes that Dutch media discourse perpetuates public opinions regarding Syrian and Ukrainian refugees. However, it is important to note that due to contextual factors, it is important to be aware of the nuances that might apply.Show less
