However, they often forget the social implications of large-scale implementation of these technologies, such as potential discrimination and oppression from automated decision-making systems. This thesis takes the community-based art project, The Feminist Data Set by Caroline Sinders, as a source of interest in how its activism reflects on these concerns and reveals the power structures in data science and networks. The Feminist Data Set essentially recognizes its power in its capacity to act and propose alternative practices to large technology companies. Through the analysis of the text by Sinders about the project and workshops, this thesis tries to review what specific strategies Sinders offers to tackle the issue of biases within AI and how to make networks more democratic. The model that The Feminist Data Set emphasizes actively involves participants, where the education and access to the data about algorithms could benefit social networks and the internet in more democratization and accountability, which could bring society closer to the ideas of social justice within AI-based systems.Show less

The creation of Grutas Park containing the monuments of Soviet communist party leaders in Lithuania in early 2000s brought attention to the treatment of the traumatizing past and the construction of memories. The thesis concentrates on the analysis of the statues and the photographs Stalin’s World made by Martin Parr. The documentary photographer used the monuments as valuable elements of his version of the history account. By looking at three types of history (official, generational, and surreal) and combining them with two case studies (the park with its statues and photographs) it becomes possible to see how collective and individual memory, nostalgia, and processes of remembering work together offering a schema to process and reflect on the traumatizing Soviet past not only for Lithuanians but for anyone with the troubled historical past.Show less

Show less

By means of reading Allora & Calzadilla's Chalk in its iteration in Zapopan, Mexico, I illustrate the potential of alternative methodologies with which to approach participatory art. I use the notions of corporeality and Henri Lefebvre's theory of the production of space to reveal that a seemingly innocent iteration is indeed highly emancipatory. As we shall see, the joyful bodily occupation of the square as a counter-establishment force is capable of disrupting oppressive spatial practices.Show less

The theory is built on four actors: the artist, the assistant, the recipient and the technical system, as well as spatial and temporal parameters. The actors and parameters together form a set of tools that can be used to study interaction in digital art. This research paper will expand this theory, as display does not play a determining role within the theory. The expanded theory will be applied to two case-studies: the Companion (EXPANDED) (2020) and Companion (EXPANDED) (2022) that were included in the KAWS: New Fiction exhibitions. One of these exhibitions took place in the physical Serpentine North Gallery, London, the other is still accessible in videogame Fortnite. The application of the theory will provide insight on the role display plays within the analysis of interactive art within the physical and digital space.Show less

Show less

Show less

The point of departure in this study is the search for alternative ways for diasporic Uyghurs to narrate their experiences on the Uygur conflict in order to circumvent China’s global implementation of censorship. Therefore, memorial structures should be reconsidered which will be done through Marianne Hirsch’s theoretical framework of ‘postmemory’.2 Hirsch’s concept is originally coined in the context of the Holocaust and will be useful for analysis given the traumatic and genocidal characteristics of the Uyghur conflict. In this article, A Boy Named Freedom will be read as postmemoir reflecting upon its intergenerational transmission of the traumatic memories of Uyghurs in the Netherlands.Show less

Show less

Show less

I will argue that ‘Internet memes’ can be seen as a language by comparing it to language structures as described in de Saussure’s model of linguistics. This comparison will showcase the similarities between regular language structures and the structures that ‘Internet memes’ are built from. Furthermore, by using the theory of Post-Structuralism, I will argue that ‘Internet memes’ as a language have an influence on culture and cultural practices such as art. Consequently, Holly Sweet’s Vine Tarot is used as a case study, or more specifically the card called The Lovers, which corresponds with the Two Bros Vine by Anthony Padilla, to show that ‘Internet memes’ are indeed as layered and complex as any language, and therefore influence cultural practices.Show less

Show less

The research paper will be divided into two arguments. First, it will be argued that graffiti is mystified by the media and its practitioners, leading to the formation of a two-sided myth. The second part will assess the strategic removal of graffiti as an iconoclastic act and discuss the repercussions of absence in relation to the formation of myth. With this research, I would like to show how the absence of graffiti has an agency and how absence could be perceived as a signifier of myth. Hereby I will challenge and try to diversify the applicability of myth and show how a multidisciplinary approach to the study of art can enrich its overall modularity.Show less

With her project, Sara Vrugt aimed to make people aware of their relationship with nature by inviting them to participate in the artistic production of an embroidery, that is now on display as an installation work. The project will be framed in an ecological context on art, aesthetics and participation and approached from aesthetics theories that can be used to understand the participatory production process and the ephemeral character of the artwork. This paper argues that both the participative process as well as the eventual physical object and its formal qualities have relational significance and thus address ecological awareness.Show less
