This thesis describes and analyzes the famine that occurred in the Netherlands East Indies, c. 1900-1904. The famine affected Java and parts of the Outer Islands. It details (the principles behind)...Show moreThis thesis describes and analyzes the famine that occurred in the Netherlands East Indies, c. 1900-1904. The famine affected Java and parts of the Outer Islands. It details (the principles behind) the relief efforts of the Dutch colonial government. It also analyzes how the colonial government used the famine to accumulate knowledge on the subject, while politically representing and justifying its response. The thesis argues that famines and food shortages are integral to understanding the colonial state and colonial society. Further, it takes a comparative perspective by connecting the famine to famine experiences of other colonial powers in British India and French Indochina.Show less
Na de toekenning in 1919 van zowel passief als actief kiesrecht aan vrouwen, werd in 1920 de Nederlandse Christen-Vrouwenbond opgericht, met als statutair doel: voorlichting aan haar leden over...Show moreNa de toekenning in 1919 van zowel passief als actief kiesrecht aan vrouwen, werd in 1920 de Nederlandse Christen-Vrouwenbond opgericht, met als statutair doel: voorlichting aan haar leden over maatschappelijke en staatkundige zaken, zodat uiteindelijk de vrouw haar plaats in het politieke leven zou kunnen innemen. Onderzocht is, in hoeverre daar voor de jaren 1945-1965 sprake van was. Bleef de NCVB opereren volgens eigen statuten, wat was haar rol binnen het verzuilde landschap van die jaren en leidde de vrouwelijk sociabiliteit tot een daadkrachtig maatschappelijk optreden. Dit laatste stond in de statutaire aanvulling van 1950. Ter vergelijking is de situatie van na de oorlogsjaren vergeleken met die van voor 1940. Met dit onderzoek is de geschiedenis van de NCVB vanaf het oprichtingsjaar tot en met de tweede emancipatiegolf in de jaren zeventig en tachtig, voltooid.Show less

The republican courts were a part of an Irish...Show moreThis thesis focuses on the Irish Republican Courts which existed during the Anglo-Irish War of 1919-1921, also known as the Irish War of Independence. The republican courts were a part of an Irish alternative government, which existed alongside the then still present British government in Ireland. It focuses especially on the motives of ordinary Irishmen to use the republican courts, what is was that made them function, and to what extent they can be considered to have functioned successfully as judicial institutions. Their success as judicial institutions was measured by comparing them to British courts, the Petty Sessions, in terms of the number of cases and types of cases each dealt with. The results amount to a correction of the existing image of the republican courts.Show less
