Many languages have a fixed preference, for example, for either prepositions or postpositions (Dryer, 2013). If there are any occurrences of inversion, they are either obligatory, or at least, when optional, bound by restrictions; as can be seen in Broadwell (2006). Bidayuh - an Austronesian language of Borneo, a language not very well documented - shows some peculiar inversions of preposition and noun phrase. These inversions only occur with movement. The current study examines P-DP reordering for DP’s that have moved to the front of their simple matrix clause; to the front of their embedded clause; or out of their embedded clause, to the front of the matrix clause. It looks into several different prepositions and different matrix verbs, as well as different DP complements. All three movement conditions elicit different sets of restrictions on reordering P and DP. The data are discussed in the light of Merchant’s (2002) theory of swiping and Hartman and Ai’s (2009) account of it. Unfortunately, the current study cannot draw any hard conclusions. More research is needed.Show less

Most analysts understand the airing of these debates in the context of a short-term freedom of speech in Iran which only occurs during the elections. Such a view however does not do justice to the possible long-term effects of these debates on Iranian democracy. This paper will analyze the long-term effects that these television debates may have on the process of democracy in Iran as a whole. There is reason to think that a long-term effect of televised debates is likely. Exposure of Iranians to a level of freedom of speech during campaigns adds to the democratic legitimacy of the elections, and through that to the legitimacy of the elected President. This paper will analyze the live television debates between the eight presidential candidates of 2013 as data to examine ‘to what extent the presidential debates of 2013 have contributed to more democratic elections.’ This paper has chosen to focus on the conventional media, because these are more widespread than Internet in Iran.Show less

Based on An’s Chŏngch’i Wŏnnon (政治原論, Basic Principles of Politics, 1907), the first modern political science textbook in Korea, the study explores the adoption of modern Western political science, which some of these intellectuals regarded as a means of national survival. This study also revalorizes Chŏngch’i Wŏnnon and the act of translation, the most common way of learning the West yet has been undermined in the discourse of nationalist historiography, by applying the frameworks of translation studies.Show less

Both sides raided and skirmished to control strongholds on the major rivers (Rhine and Waal) and to encircle Utrecht. The final offensive of the count was a chevauchee of almost 3000 horses, which forced the Bishops surrender in June 1356. The forces collected by the count were mostly from Guelders and Holland but also from other principalities which bordered the great rivers. Their interest in trade and tolls is likely to have been a key factor to explain their involvement.Show less

Show less

The main focus will be on differences between the law codes of Æthelread Aethelbert, Alfred and Ine and Cnut. Several articles have been written about the change of the legal status of women over the course of the Anglo-Saxon period. In light of these article I will analyse the Law Codes written by Aethelbert and his succesors as well as other legal documents from the Anglo-Saxon period to see if this is indeed the case.Show less

Yet the wage gap as well as 4other hurdles remain despite these laws. The question is therefore what factors play a role in the fact that Japanese women who are among the best educated in the world, who not only have the Labor Standard Law, but an Equal Employment Opportunity Law as well, must contend with a substantial wage gap and such high unemployment rates? This thesis will consist of two parts aside from the introductory and the closing chapters. The first part will be chapter two, containing a literature review in which the research of several western scholars as well as native Japanese scholars concerning their assessment of the EEOL in Japan will be discussed and evaluated. In addition this part will also discuss the different roles companies and government play with regard to keeping the oppression of women in the labor market as it is, or furthering equal opportunity. In the second part of this thesis, chapter 3, the difficulties that working women, annd specifically working mothers, face in their day to day life will be examined on the basis of interviews conducted by scholars with these working women and mothers.Show less

The research is based on the different theories concerning second language acquisition (SLA) and pronunciation aptitude. The most important theories are those along the lines of Contrastive Analysis, but the research also includes theories such as those by Dörnyei (2006) and Carroll (1965). All theories will be discussed in greater detail later on in this thesis. The research also has a component of comparison, reviewing the researches by Hu et al. (2012) and DeFrance and Smakman (2012).Show less

I connected this with the mise en page of the Venetus A manuscript, one of the most famous Iliad manuscripts. The content from different sources is divided over different places on the page. The scribe made his own choices in selecting the content for the manuscript, but was guided by the pedagogical tradition before him, in which the first 12 books of the Iliad were the most important. The amount and content of the scholia is very diverse.Show less

It is normally assumed that these graphemes can be used interchangeably. However, it is argued that this is clearly not the case. The thesis then tries to show in which environments the different graphemes are used and how the use can be motivated phonologically.Show less
