Starting with a close-reading of Dr. Fredric Wertham’s...Show moreIn this bachelor’s thesis, the aim is to analyze the way graphic novels add to the discussion on sexuality and its representation in society. Starting with a close-reading of Dr. Fredric Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent (1954), this thesis will argue that comics, having long been accused of promoting deviant sexuality, decided to adopt this accusation as a badge of honor, and had the outcast-status of its superheroes be a critique on the exclusionist normativity of society. Close-reading the ‘revisionist superhero narrative’ (Geoff Klock: How To Read Superheroes And Why (2002)) in Alan Moore’s Watchmen (1986-1987) and The Killing Joke (1988) will out the way these comics represent the (repression of) sexual desire of its characters, and how they find safety behind their alter egos. Continuing with Batman, next up is Grant Morrison’s work with the character, who decided to ‘reconquer’ Batman’s psyche and sexuality. Close-reading the psychosexual nature of Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth (1989), an argument will be made for the way superhero comics advocate complete expression, and do away with repression. Lastly, this thesis close-reads the recent influx of superhero blockbusters (mainly the MCU), and argues that they, unfortunately, try to steer back to the idea of normativity as the most beneficial form of personal expression, choosing in this way to differ from their comics influence. In conclusion, this thesis wishes to present comics as a medium with the power to positively represent non-normativity.Show less

Een kritisch onderzoek naar enkele invloedrijke academische publicaties over metafictie, waarin de relatie tussen metafictie en het idee van een zelfbewuste literatuur wordt onderzocht en...Show moreEen kritisch onderzoek naar enkele invloedrijke academische publicaties over metafictie, waarin de relatie tussen metafictie en het idee van een zelfbewuste literatuur wordt onderzocht en bekritiseerd. Het onderzoek neemt, na een overweging van theoretische stellingen over metafictie van auteurs zoals Waugh en Hutcheon, Mark Currie’s notie van metafictie als een borderline discourse op. Aan de hand van deze definitie van metafictie, als een literair grensgeval tussen literatuurkritiek en fictie, behelst het onderzoek een lezing van Lost in the Funhouse (1968) van John Barth. In deze lezing wordt er gereflecteerd op de manier waarop deze metafictieve roman de relatie tussen literatuurkritiek en fictie heeft geliterariseerd, en daardoor gelezen kan worden als een reflectie van het idee van metafictie als een borderline discourse: zo staat de literatuurwetenschap in de lachspiegel van de literatuur in Lost in the Funhouse.Show less

For my research, I have used various studies on musical...Show moreIn this thesis, I will investigate whether it is possible to analyse music in video games through the terminologies of film narratology. For my research, I have used various studies on musical analysis in film and complemented this with musical analysis in video games specifically. My research focuses on music in relation to the diegetic world of video games and how musical focalisation is effectuated. To illustrate the relation between music and the diegetic world, and between music and focalisation, I have done case studies on respectively The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (CD PROJEKT RED, 2015), and The Path (Tale of Tales, 2009). By doing this research, I aim for a better understanding of the relation between a video game's music in regard to the narrative.Show less
