Dankzij onder andere musea zelf is het mogelijk om de beroemdste schilderijen digitaal en in detail te bekijken. De toegang tot kunst is hiermee laagdrempelig geworden. De mogelijkheden om kunstobjecten van dichtbij te bekijken en om ze aan te raken zijn in het museum beperkt. Hierdoor zou men zich kunnen afvragen wat tegenwoordig de toegevoegde waarde nog is van een museumbezoek, wanneer alle werken ook online te zien zijn.Om er achter te komen wat de toegevoegde waarde van een museumbezoek is, spelen drie aspecten een grote rol in een kunstbeleving, namelijk: de rol van de toeschouwer, de rol van het kunstobject en de rol van authenticiteit.Show less

Throughout the Civil Rights Movement, many African Americans were lynched and even killed by local white supremacists especially members of the Ku Klux Klan. In 1966, Vernon Dahmer, the leader of the Forrest County Chapter of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi, was murdered by Klansmen’s firebombing. However, different from earlier murder cases, Dahmer’s murder happened during a changing racial situation in Mississippi: many local white people, who used to support the Klansmen, began to hate their racial violence; the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) strengthened their suppression of the Ku Klux Klan; white politicians had to adjust themselves to the irresistible trend that more blacks would participate in politics and stop ignoring racial violence performed by the Klansmen. Under these circumstances, it seemed that the Ku Klux Klan was out of ways in fighting against the voting progress and thus the murder of Vernon Dahmer turned their one last battle. In my thesis, I intend to look into how the Ku Klux Klan was influenced by both the Federal Government and Mississippi authorities. How did the FBI’s Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPR) in the 1960s suppress the force of the Ku Klux Klan. Inside the state, the relationship between white liberals and the civil rights movement became increasingly strained. Based on these facts, we can see that the murder of Dahmer stimulated Mississippians’ adaption to a changing racial atmosphere and their reaction against modern liberalism, which brought profound influence to the decline of the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan as well as Mississippi politics in the late twentieth century. I will base my research on both national and local newspaper sources, literature works, oral history collections and documentaries of university libraries in Mississippi. The first chapter will look into the murder case of Vernon Dahmer and analyze its difference with former civil rights cases specially with the murders of Medgar Evers and the three civil rights workers; the second chapter will be dealing with the roles that the FBI and the Federal Government played in the murder case and their influence to the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. The third chapter will analyze the influence that Paul Johnson’s administration brought to the local racial atmosphere.Show less

Why can some SFP1s, like the Dutch hè, attach to [-Q]-questions, while most SFP1s are unable to attach to questions? This paper focuses on rhetorical wh-questions. First the different theories on the structure and meaning of rhetorical questions are discussed. Then I define what I consider a rhetorical question, and provide tests to distinguish rhetorical questions from ordinary questions in Dutch. I argue against the proposal that ordinary questions and rhetorical questions are semantically and structurally the same (Copanigro & Sprouse 2007), and argue in favor of the idea that RQs and OQs are actually semantically and syntactically different from each other. Combining earlier theories on the semantics and structure of rhetorical questions (Han 2002, Obenauer & Poletto 2000) and generalizations on the structure of SFPs using the split-CP hypothesis (Law 2004, Sybesma & Li 2007), I propose the following to account for the main question of this paper: In contrary to wh¬-words in ordinary questions, which are positioned in [Spec, ForceP], the wh-words in rhetorical questions are positioned in [Spec, EpistP]. Following Sybesma & Li (2007) SFPs are base generated across the different layers of CP. The SFP1 hè is base generated in Epist0. SFP1s have an inherent feature [+SFP] which requires to be checked by all the relevant sentence information. In ordinary statements, the entire sentence moves to [Spec, EpistP] to check this SFP feature in sentences with hè. In RQs the wh-word carries all the relevant epistemic information of the sentence (Han 2002), and the SFP-feature can be checked. In ordinary questions there is no wh-word in EpistP, and the [+SFP]-feature cannot be checked; the sentence is ungrammatical. Show less

In this...Show moreAfter the conquest of Granada by the Catholic Kings in 1492, the original Muslim population revolted twice against their Christian rulers: first in 1499-1500 and a second time in 1568-71. In this paper, both revolts are analysed and compared. Why did the Muslims of Granada revolt twice against the Christian authorities? What caused and sparked these revolts? Who were the rebels, and what were their goals? How did the local authorities react, and how did the Spanish kings react? In this paper, it becomes clear that the revolts were very different in nature, when it comes to their roots, the international environment, their organisation and their development. The first revolt started as a result of rapid changes that caused instability and an identity crisis among the Moors. The second revolt had, due to the development of a Morisco identity in the decades between the two rebellions, much more the characteristics of a true war. The priorities of the Catholic authorities had changed too. Whereas the first rebellion had been about religion and conversion, the second rebellion was about identity and assimilation. The comparison between the two revolts showed that the problems that developed were not just caused by changes in policy of the rulers of the peninsula, but by an interaction between the different developments – cultural, political, religious and social – that made the original inhabitants of the Kingdom of Granada strangers in their homelands.Show less

De opdrachten tot...Show moreIn deze scriptie worden twee frescoportretten vergeleken van dezelfde jonge vrouw, Giovanna degli Albizzi; daarbij vormt het verschil in haar kleding het onderwerp van onderzoek. De opdrachten tot deze twee fresco’s werden gegeven door Giovanni Tornabuoni. Het ene fresco is geschilderd door Ghirlandaio en bevindt zich in de Tornabuoni kapel. Het andere werk is toegeschreven aan Botticelli en werd in de negentiende eeuw ontdekt in de Villa tornabuoni. Het onderscheid in kleding heeft wellicht te maken met de functie van deze twee fresco’s en de locaties ervan: de één bevindt zich in een kapel, de ander in een villa. Het zou logisch zijn dat de kleding hiermee in overeenstemming is. De vraag is echter juist waarom de kleding in de kapel er veel uitbundiger uit ziet. Door de kleding te analyseren wordt duidelijk dat deze een signaalfunctie heeft. In de villa is Giovanna uitgebeeld als een jong getrouwde vrouw, herkenbaar aan de witte cintura. Deze scène is te interpreteren als een voorstelling van een jonge vrouw die geïntroduceerd wordt als net gehuwd en daarmee herinnerd wordt aan haar huwelijkse deugden. Het thema van het werk is passend voor een privévertrek in een villa, bestemd voor het jonge huwelijkspaar. In het geval van het portret in de kapel is naar een verklaring gezocht voor de rijkversierde kleding van Giovanna. In dit portret draagt zij een giornea met een rijk dessin, bestaande uit zonnen en arenden. Zoals gesteld, kan dit dessin geïnterpreteerd worden als een verbintenis tussen twee families, de zon voor de Albizzi, de arend voor de Tornabuoni. Desondanks blijft de vraag waarom Giovanna juist in de kapel overdadig gekleed is, omdat het onduidelijk is voor wie dit bedoeld was. In dit onderzoek wordt verondersteld dat de weelderige kleding van Giovanna mogelijk bedoeld was om de aanschouwer te imponeren. De kleding kan gezien worden als een bevestiging dat meerdere mensen toegang hebben gehad tot deze kapel en wie dit precies zijn geweest, of dit voor iedereen toegankelijk was, zal wellicht blijken als er meer onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd naar dit onderwerp.Show less

De proefpersonen, beginnende of vaardige L2 sprekers van NGT, moesten lexicale beslissingen maken op gebaren die getoond werden. De helft bestond uit lexicale gebaren (hoog-iconisch en laag-iconisch) en de andere helft uit pseudogebaren. Tijdens de verwerking van gebaren bleken de reactietijden op de pseudogebaren significant langzamer te zijn dan de reactietijden op de lexicale gebaren. Op de pseudogebaren werden meer fouten gemaakt, maar dat verschil was niet significant. Daarnaast lieten de resultaten, bij zowel de beginnende als vaardige L2 sprekers, geen faciliterend effect bij de hoog-iconische gebaren zien. Tevens werden bij beide groepen meer goede responses gegeven op de laag-iconische gebaren dan op de hoog-iconische gebaren.Show less

Much less attention is given to economic history, more specifically history of economic policy. This thesis examines the relationship between the economic policy and the continuity of Indonesian state during the revolution period. It analyzes how the state built its policy, what the policies were and what the implications were for the country development. I argue, despite there is a belief that considers the revolution period is “a history no change”, several economic policies had an impact to the state within the decolonization framework.Show less

As a result,...Show moreThe 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear incident revitalised Japan’s anti-nuclear power protest movement. The summer of 2012 saw large protests in front of the parliamentary building. As a result, public opinion moved away from support of nuclear power to opposition to nuclear power. Many protesters believed that the nuclear debate would impact the 2012 lower house elections. This however proved not to be the case, proving to many onlookers that civil protest in Japan does not lead to political change. Indeed, many commentators believe that civil society in Japan is weak in comparison to the power of the bureaucracy. Yet, as this research shows, civil society is not by any means necessarily weak. This research argues that civil protest is quite viable in Japan if organised within a specific framework. The success of the ‘Article 9 Society’ provides an example for other civil protest movements looking to impact Japan’s political process. It is within the framework of the Article 9 Society that other movements ought to organize their civil protest. Consequently, this research finds that the anti-nuclear power movement’s failure is not the result of a weak civil society, but rather a failure in protest organization.Show less

Papuans have been...Show moreBeginning with a case in 2004 where the 'stupid Papuans' stereotype resurfaced in a witness testimony, this thesis explores the origin of the stereotype of Papuans in New Guinea. Papuans have been portrayed as stupid, wild and savages in Western texts. This thesis explores the origin of these ideas by scrutinizing travel accounts written by Europeans who traveled along the northern coast of New Guinea in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. By investigating these accounts and connecting them with the nature of the Dutch administration, it was found that while the Dutch were involved in the construction of the aforementioned stereotypes, the native informants employed by the Dutch were quite decisive in this process. This thesis argues that the reason for the persistence of this stereotype is the fact that the stereotype was not merely generated by the Europeans, but also believed by the surrounding native societies.Show less
