Currently, the high immigration in the recent century has resulted in a significant part of the Dutch population having a migration background. In addition, this significant group has shown a trend in application to universities. This trend is met with numerous peculiarities, showing additional economic and social obstacles these students go through during their university time, influencing their sense of belonging. Where the sense of belonging has shown to greatly influence well-being and college success rates. By using a hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative research design, focused on lived experiences using interviews, next to thorough revision of Leiden University policy, this study gives insight into the perception of a sense of belonging in Dutch students, next to showcasing the positive effects this has on the subjects. Through showing the potential positive effects on a sense of belonging, this study stresses the importance of active institutional policy in addressing marginalized groups. This finding is particularly evident in the case of adequate mentoring, offering guidance for students with a migration background has been found to improve their senses of belonging. Where the effects of this better sense of belonging have shown to improve students’ motivation, grades, and overall college success.Show less

The Leiden University...Show moreThis research investigates the impact of Leiden University College on students their social community and connections within The Hague and the Anna van Buerenplein campus. The Leiden University College is a university located in The Hague within the Anna van Buerenplein campus. The campus holds the obligatory housing studios for the first and second years, classroom and workgroup spaces for the students their academics, and other amenities, forming an enclosed community within the building. By using floor plans, results of a survey regarding the Leiden University community, and mental mapping of The Hague, this research reveals how the community of the Anna van Buerenplein campus is internalized by both the system of the University and the students, and how various results indicate a longing for more connections outside of the campus community. This paper revisits the importance of placemaking and developing a sense of space within on-campus student housing, positively affecting the students their wellbeing and satisfaction.Show less

Artist Nan Goldin constructed performance protests against the Sackler family, a pharmaceutical dynasty partly responsible for the opioid crisis in the United States. These protests served the purpose of getting museums to cut their ties with the Sackler family, thus also refusing funding from the Sackler’s. This paper has investigated how Nan Goldin has succeeded in doing so, using theories from performance studies to visual rhetoric. This research hopes to have illustrated how these previously mentioned powerful performance tools can help build a community to fight against big institutions.Show less

Aan de hand van hedendaagse beschrijvingen en interpretaties van dit concept door onder anderen Gerald Bruns en Leonard Lawlor, wordt onderzocht op welke manier de mensenmassa op de foto traditionele visies op het menszijn overstijgt, en in het proces van becoming gedeconstrueerd en gedeïndividualiseerd wordt. De digitale manipulatie van de foto speelt hierbij een belangrijke rol. De mens verliest hierdoor zijn identiteit en betekenis als individu en vormt samen met zijn soortgenoten een groep die verder gaat dan het overstijgen van het menszijn, namelijk richting het dierlijk worden van de mens: een proces van becoming-animal is in gang gezet. Aan de hand van deze theorie, wordt de groep op de foto geïnterpreteerd als roedel of zwerm die samen een collectief vormt dat op de effectenbeurs de globalisatie in gang houdt. In de door Gursky gecreëerde constructie leven deze becomings-animal een nomadisch bestaan en ondergaan zij een constant, eindeloos proces van ontwikkeling en deterritorialisatie dat Chicago Board of Trade III visualiseert.Show less

By analyzing the closing scenes of three of his works—Pulp Fiction (1994), Inglourious Basterds (2009), and Django Unchained (2012)—the study aims to uncover the distinct stylistic elements that characterize Tarantino's directorial approach. The selected films span nearly two decades and various genres, providing a comprehensive overview of his evolving style. Key techniques such as bracketing, close-ups, music, and mirroring shots are identified as recurring elements in his endings. These techniques emphasize character emotions and control, creating memorable and impactful conclusions. The study concludes that Tarantino's unique signature is evident in his film endings, showcasing his consistent thematic focus on control and power dynamics .Show less

Danielewski's novel 'House of Leaves.' Chapter 1 is split into two sections: section 1.1 contains an analysis of the gothic elements present in 'The Navidson Record' central to the novel and, in section 1.2, I proceed to examine the novel's metafictional characteristics and how metafiction and Gothicism are intertwined in the text. In both preceding sections, the reader's knowledge gap—referred to in my thesis as the epistemological gap—is prevalent in my reading of the novel. Consequently, in Chapter 2 I explore this knowledge gap further, relating it to the gothic and metafictional elements analyzed in the preceding chapter. Lastly, I argue that the audience might fill the epistemological gap by projecting their own personal interpretations of the text onto it. One of the main characters inside the narrative, Johnny Truant, projects his childhood trauma onto the text and processes it in his annotations to 'The Navidson Record.'Show less

In de afgelopen jaren is er steeds meer aandacht voor verschillende vormen van diversiteit binnen de jeugdliteratuur, zoals gender, seksuele, etnische en culturele diversiteit. In dat rijtje...Show moreIn de afgelopen jaren is er steeds meer aandacht voor verschillende vormen van diversiteit binnen de jeugdliteratuur, zoals gender, seksuele, etnische en culturele diversiteit. In dat rijtje ontbreekt neurodivergentie; aandacht voor groepen van wie het brein anders werkt. Hoewel daarbij meestal wordt gedacht aan ASS of ADHD, valt ook hoogbegaafdheid onder deze noemer. Daarom staat in deze scriptie de representatie van hoogbegaafdheid in recente jeugdliteratuur centraal. Aan de hand van een brede definitie van hoogbegaafdheid, waarin intellectuele en creatief-productieve vaardigheden gecombineerd worden met ondersteuning uit de sociale omgeving, analyseer ik zes jeugdboeken. Daarbij heb ik oog voor de werking tussen gender en intelligentie. Uit mijn onderzoek is gebleken dat deze zes boeken een beeld van een succesvolle hoogbegaafde neerzetten. De protagonisten zijn bijna zonder uitzondering sterk intrinsiek gemotiveerd en hebben weinig last van perfectionisme of faalangst. Daarnaast komt de combinatie van uitzonderlijk talent op het gebied van muziek, wiskunde en taal meermaals voor. Dit roept het beeld op dat hoogbegaafden op alle terreinen uitblinken. De onderzochte boeken schenken minder aandacht aan creatief-productieve capaciteiten. De hoogbegaafde protagonisten passen op sociaal gebied in twee narratieven. Het eerste narratief veronderstelt de protagonist als een autonome Einzelgänger, die weinig vriendschappen heeft en daar ook niet actief naar op zoek is. In het tweede narratief heeft de protagonist meer vrienden, maar wordt tegelijkertijd ook gepest. De vrouwelijke protagonisten passen niet binnen de perceptie van vrouwelijke hoogbegaafdheid die Reis (2005) presenteert, waarbij vrouwelijke hoogbegaafden meer twijfelen aan hun toekomst en minder succes behalen. Het (accuraat) weergeven van neurodivergentie in jeugdliteratuur draagt bij aan zelfherkenning voor hoogbegaafde kinderen en erkenning door hun sociale omgeving. Met deze masterscriptie hoop ik de urgentie van de representatie van neurodivergentie in jeugdliteratuur te benadrukken.Show less
