The ideophones existing in the different dialects of Akan are marked by pitch and placed...Show moreThis thesis report aims to analyze the different types of iconicity present in the Ghanaian language Akan. The ideophones existing in the different dialects of Akan are marked by pitch and placed in the center of focus by their special syntactic place at the boundary of the utterance they belong to. They can be categorized in the semantic domains of sound, movement, touch and vision. Their expressive morphology can add depictive concepts as gradation and iteration to their meaning. Imagic iconicity can be found in onomatopoeic ideophones. Of the possible Gestalt iconic mappings, three are prevalent: reduplication (evoking iteration or distribution), closed monosyllabicity (evoking a unitary event) and prolonged vowel length (evoking duration). Relative iconicity does not seem to be a prevalent feature of Akan ideophones.Show less

The present study...Show moreDiscourse markers and tag questions have garnered much attention in present-day discourse analysis, but research into their ways in the past has only been conducted recently. The present study looks at discourse markers and tag questions from a socio-historical perspective, with as its focus the Late Modern English period. The study investigates five discourse markers (oh, ah, well, why, and you know) and tag questions by analyzing their distribution across four variables (gender, social class, intimacy, and setting). The corpus was created by the author by way of a selection of Jane Austen’s fictional works during a twenty-five year period (1792–1817) and has been analyzed by manual text-based analysis and by lexical analysis software. The findings indicate that there are significant correlations regarding discourse marker use and the variables gender (i.e. female speakers) and social class (i.e. lower-middle class). Furthermore, the analysis of the tag questions has demonstrated that the function of tag questions differ regarding the gender of the speaker. The study also discovered that the use of both discourse markers and tag questions are particularly a feature of the speech of silly or manipulative characters.Show less

In this paper, I will discuss...Show moreOn 26 September 26 2013, Japanese prime-minister Shinzo Abe vowed in front of the General Assembly of the United Nations to 'create a society in which women shine'. In this paper, I will discuss the structural impediments to Abe’s work- and family balance plans to increase women’s participation in the Japanese labour force, and how the Japanese government can overcome them. The analysis of past policies does not only suggest that Abe’s womenomics plans are not particularly innovative, but also indicates Abe’s ‘work- and family balance’ plans are subject to social stigmas, reinforced not only by Japanese company employment practices, but also by the government itself. Additionally, suitable policy recommendations are provided.Show less

Ik heb de...Show moreEen van de vragen die actueel is in reduplicatie studies is niet hoe reduplicatie fonologisch werkt, maar wat de betekenis van reduplicatie is. Heeft het een universele betekenis? Ik heb de verschillende betekenissen die reduplicatie kan hebben in het Wolof, een Niger-Congo taal, bestudeerd en gekeken hoe ze kunnen passen binnen bestaande theorieën over de semantiek van reduplicatie. Ik heb zes betekenissen gevonden die een geredupliceerde vorm in Wolof kan hebben: gevolg of abstractie, iteratief, ideofonisch, locatief, 'doen alsof' en intensivering. Ondanks dat reduplicatie niet meer productief is in die taal heb ik gekeken of er bepaalde beperkingen zijn in wanneer het wel en niet kan plaatsvinden. Morfologisch gezien is reduplicatie in het Wolof vaak nominaliserend, maar het lijkt niet noodzakelijk te zijn om een zelfstandig naamwoord te vormen. Wanneer het niet plaatsvindt, nemen de zelfstandige naamwoorden dezelfde vorm aan als de werkwoorden en ik zal ook kort ingaan op de betekenis van werkwoorden en zelfstandige naamwoorden.Show less

Nieuwe uitvaartsvormen worden in sommige literatuur gelinkt aan een verandering in wereldvoorstellingen en de mening die men heeft over de functie van uitvaartrituelen. Door analyse van de handelingen bij nieuwe uitvaartvormen, zoals het verstrooien van as, evenals de handelingen bij herdenkingsrituelen, waarbij de nadruk ligt op het creëren van een fysieke representatie van de overledene, wordt aangetoond dat, hoewel uiterlijkheden in sommige gevallen aan verandering onderhevig zijn, dit niet noodzakelijk het geval hoeft te zijn voor de wereldvoorstelling die men bij een uitvaart heeft, en de rol die de uitvaart en herdenkingsrituelen spelen in de samenleving.Show less

In this thesis the focus will be on how the legend lends...Show moreThroughout time, the legend of King Arthur has been adapted and exploited to meet the needs of each era; each era has its own King Arthur. In this thesis the focus will be on how the legend lends itself to such manipulation and adaptation and in what ways the legend has been adapted to suit changing political times. From the start of the Early Middle Ages, the legend of King Arthur was firmly established in society and many medieval writers embellished the legend. Authors like Chretien de Troyes and Thomas Mallory enriched the legend, subtly imposing the conflicts of their time onto the legend. After falling from popularity in the Early Modern era the legend was to experience a revival of interest in the 19th and 20th centuries. The portrayal of Arthur throughout each era differs spectacularly and sheds light on contemporary political issues, as the outside world feeds into the view. This in turn calls attention to my research question; how does the portrayal of Arthur in different eras relate to the outside political world and concerns of the time? My provisional thesis statement is that the legend of Arthur has been adapted throughout time to express and relate the needs and concerns of different eras. In order to answer my research question I will make use of several primary texts from the Middle Ages, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Chronicle Historia Regum Britanniae, Thomas Mallory’s Le Morte D’Arthur and the poem the Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle and compare them with texts from the 19th and 20th century. In particular, Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Tennyson’s Idylls of the King and T.H. White’s The Once and Future King. I will carry out a historically and culturally contextualised analysis of the portrayal of Arthur and his knights in each era that will explain the differing ways in which they are presented.Show less
