The thesis concludes that the decade...Show moreThis thesis examines the effects of the so-called Nayaka kings on Kandyan kingship in the first decade of the Nayaka period of the Kandyan kingdom (1729-1750). The thesis concludes that the decade before the Nayaka kings rose to power shows remarkable continuity with the first decade after the Nayaka kings ascended the Kandyan throne, and it is therefore difficult to state that the Nayaka ascension can be seen as a clear break with the former dynasty. The ceremonies at the court do not show any sign of an increased divinization, both Sri Vijaya Rajasinha (1739-1747) and Kirti Sri Rajasinha (1747-1782) even had a bigger emphasis on becoming/being an ideal Buddhist ruler, a Cakravarti.Show less

Epistemological groups proposed here include archetypal historians who created original written histories with mythological elements, positivist historians who reject the mythological nature of the local histories, and post-structuralist historians who try to reconcile the useful historical data to be found in positivist and archetypal works. What has been lacking in this field has been a comparative study to explore the similarities and differences between these epistemologies, which this modest project seeks to present in the context of the historiographical 'journey' of Kerala's Cheraman Perumal legend. Concluding that there is a need for further post-structuralist study of the Cheraman Perumal, this project seeks to act as a call to action as an outsider to the field, to show why historians specializing in Kerala's history should be exploring the varied historiographical epistemologies to fill in the gaps in Kerala's history through previously ignored sources, specifically those of the Cheraman Perumal story.Show less
Bottom-up study into the personal contributions of Dutch colonial agent François Caron (1600-1673) and local patrons to the formation of favourable diplomatic relations between the Dutch East India...Show moreBottom-up study into the personal contributions of Dutch colonial agent François Caron (1600-1673) and local patrons to the formation of favourable diplomatic relations between the Dutch East India Company and the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan in the period precluding Dutch confinement on the island of Deshima, Nagasaki. This contribution demonstrates that when the Tokugawa Shogunate began to redefine the conditions of foreign trade and diplomatic relations with Japan during the early seventeenth century, it was only one of several actors involved in this process. The local Dutch factory, led by the charismatic cultural broker Caron, also had a voice in this process through its powerful allies at court which Caron accumulated over the course of a single decade, allowing them to secure a position for the Dutch East India Company in Japan after 1641. It challenges the predominant theory that the Dutch owed their success in Japan to a pragmatic approach to trade which eschewed proselytization of the Christian faith by raising attention to the importance of systems of patronage and the efficiency of local agency in Japan and the broader early-modern colonial context.Show less

Due to the commercial nature of the spices and the...Show moreAfter the conquest of Banda in 1621, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) introduced the perkeniersstelsel to ensure a monopoly on nutmeg and mace. Due to the commercial nature of the spices and the use of slave production, the perkeniersstelsel is often compared to the Atlantic plantation system. This study traces the development of the perkeniersstelsel between 1621 and 1640 and compares it to the Atlantic plantation system. This study argues that although the VOC was attempting to develop the perkeniersstelsel in the direction of the Atlantic mode, Banda’s unique environment and the VOC’s weaknesses in accessing terrestrial resources led the system down its own path. Furthermore, it proposes that Banda slavery should be regarded as the first expansion of slavery into rural areas in Southeast Asia, rather than the first penetration of European slavery into Southeast Asia.Show less

Er wordt betoogd dat de meeste van de rijken een ontwikkelend opvolgingssysteem kenden, doordat de nadruk op de doorslaggevende factoren voor het praktisch verloop van een opvolging veranderde. Naar voren komt dat in alle rijken de factoren afstamming, aanwijzing, verkiezing en strijd van belang waren voor de invulling van het opvolgingssysteem. Voor de bestudeerde rijken geld ook dat de (op elkaar inwerkende) invloed van de islam en Turks-Mongoolse traditie, belangrijk waren voor de vorm die de opvolging kreeg. De analyse stoelt vooral op primaire bronnen voor het onderzoek naar Mughal-India en op secundaire bronnen met betrekking tot de verwante rijken. Hierbij biedt Jack Goody's opvolgingstheorie een kader aan de hand waarvan de ontwikkeling van de opvolgingssystemen wordt beschreven. Daarnaast is er specifieke aandacht voor de rol die de vrouwen van de dynastieën hadden met betrekking tot de vorming en verandering van de opvolgingssystemen. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de vrouwelijke invloed soms van doorslaggevend belang kon zijn voor de verandering van een opvolgingssysteem.Show less

De belangrijkste reden waarom ze in dit gebied handel dreven was de grote hoeveelheid peper van hoogwaardige kwaliteit waar deze organisatie een monopoliepositie over probeerde te verkrijgen. Om dit streven te bewerkstelligen was het voor de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie noodzakelijk om goede relaties te onderhouden met de vier grote rijken in dit gebied (en met name het rijk Cochin) en de grote hoeveelheid kleinere rijken in dit gebied. De heersers van deze rijken hadden echter vaak een ander idee over hun relatie met de Compagnie waardoor er vaak onderlinge verschillen waren tussen de verschillende partijen. Early modern globalization is not only about exchange of goods by seas and circulation of knowledge by urban elite, it also took place in remote commodity frontiers where unique frontier society...Show moreEarly modern globalization is not only about exchange of goods by seas and circulation of knowledge by urban elite, it also took place in remote commodity frontiers where unique frontier society had formed because of the convergence of influence from different agricultural traditions. This thesis aims to fill a gap in the studies of frontier society, that is, the absence of plantation society in early modern Asian history. By exploring the archives of the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) in Den Haag and Jakarta, the untold history of the emergence of Asian sugar plantations in the Dutch East Indies is for the first time fully exhibited. This history offers us an intriguing perspective to think how Chinese agricultural tradition and Dutch rural instituion converged and how that convergence led to divergent sugar societies in Dutch Formosa and in the Ommelanden of Batavia. It also gives us a unique example to compare with the well-known plantation society in the Atlantic and the so-called small-household economy in China. It is after all a global history in a rural society.Show less
