The opening of Japan under the Meiji Revolution in 1868 would lead to the massive importation of Western technologies, and a rapid establishment of photographic studios soon followed. One social formation that arose at the time appeared to gain an increasing access to modern technologies; the photographic studio became a popular place to visit among middle class people, who demanded a portrait picture for the integration of the family into modernity and who used it to make sense of their fast changing lives. This thesis inquires to what extent the concept of Westernization was visualized in photographic portrait imagery and how it was shaped by the Japanese photographer and the middle class subject in particular.Show less

Was foreign policy of the United States towards the Iraqi Kurds contradictory or consistent between 1958 and 1975? What factors determined Washington’s policy towards the Iraqi Kurds between 1958 and 1975? And what factors caused it to change? These are the main research questions which should provide sufficient insight in Washington’s motives and goals which determined its policy on the Iraqi Kurds, and should explain how that policy finally took shape. First of all, Washington’s main policy interests in relation to the Iraqi Kurds during General Qasim’s regime from 1958 till 1963 will be examined. Second, the main U.S. policy interests regarding the Iraqi Kurds during the Ba’athist regime of 1963 and during the presidencies of the brothers Arif will be investigated. And finally, these same U.S. policy interests will be examined during the Ba’athist regime of President al-Bakr from July 1968, until the 1975 Algiers Agreement between Iran and Iraq. During these three separate periods, this dissertation will also focus on how these U.S. interests were eventually pursued.Show less

Within this framework, this paper looks at two representations of a specific place and period in time, the Japan of the 1950s. Japan was recovering from the Second World War, its economy started to slowly grow again and consumption became an important matter in creating a homogenous middle‐class in society. Important in this process was the idea of “electrifying” households. This thesis looks at representations of consuming through the lens of cinema and analyzes how patterns of consuming electronic products such as the “three sacred treasures” (sanshu no shinki), the black and white television, the refrigerator and the washing machine, are displayed and what kind of effect acquiring these products may have on individuals and the people surrounding them. It leads to the following research question: In representing the elements of everyday life in 1950s Japan and displaying the effect of the consumption phenomenon and the electrification of society, what differences in the function of consuming electronics such as the “three treasures” are present in the films "Ohayō" and "Always: Sanchōme no Yūhi?"Show less

Little has been written about Mawayana, but there is a...Show moreThis research attempts to give a description of the verbal morphology of the moribund Mawayana language from the Arawakan language family. Little has been written about Mawayana, but there is a corpus of stories and elicited texts. That corpus has been used for this research. Several suffixes have been found, including valency marking suffixes and TAME-markers. Also quite a few clitics may occur on verbs, including the typical Arawakan pronominal elements. Other clitics do not have clear cognates in related languages and may or may not be innovations of Mawayana. In general, quite some restructuring of the verbal morphology has taken place in Mawayana and/or the closest related language Wapishana since the two split apart. The result in Mawayana seems quite chaotic, but this may be due to the limited size of the corpus. Still, there is some clear structure that becomes more clear once the many clitics have been divided on morphosyntactic or semantic grounds.Show less

Vanaf 1490 tot 1520 in haar woonvertrekken in de Castello di San Giorgio in Mantua; erna in de Appartemento della Grotta in de Corte Vecchia, waar de studiolo inmiddels was gaan dienen als anticamera voor de grotta. Het onderhavige onderzoek betrekt, in aanvulling op eerder verricht onderzoek naar haar kunstpatronage, de perceptie van de beschouwer in de vraag naar de betekenis en functie van collectie en collectieruimten voor Isabella d’Este als politiek bestuurder, en stelt tevens de vraag naar herkomst en betekenis van de naam grotta. Gebleken is dat de grotta representatieve betekenis en een belangrijke diplomatieke functie heeft gehad. In relatie tot de bestuurlijke positie van deze vorstin en de haar als vrouw opgelegde deugden, kan alleen aan de grotta dezelfde politieke betekenis worden verleend, als aan de studiolo van de vorst. De naam grotta voor de plaats waar de natuur haar zeldzame en kostbare producten samenbrengt, voor de mens om kennis te vergaren, bracht haar de reputatie van de wijze vorstin, zonder risico van afbreuk aan haar vrouwelijke deugden.Show less

Bij het nadenken...Show moreVolgens diverse overzichtsites en bronnen was de Christelijk-Historische Unie (CHU) een behoudende partij. Dit was ook mijn aanname bij aanvang van het schrijven van deze scriptie. Bij het nadenken over de kiesrechtgeschiedenis paste de CHU niet in het plaatje als het gaat om voorstanders van het algemeen kiesrecht, omdat de uitbreiding van het kiesrecht als progressief gezien wordt. Zo paste zij niet in het plaatje van de kiesrechtstrijd van 1892 en ook niet van de kiesrechtstrijd van 1917/19. Bij een nadere analyse blijkt dat de CHU niet tegen het algemeen kiesrecht of uitbreiding van het kiesrecht was, maar in bepaalde mate zelfs elementen van uitbreiding van het kiesrecht in haar beginselprogramma van 1908 had staan. Hier lijkt een paradox naar voren te komen, waarbij een behoudende partij als de CHU een progressieve stap zet en voor de uitbreiding van het kiesrecht stemt in 1917. In de paradox ligt de hoofdvraag die de rode lijn in het betoog zal vormen, namelijk hoe het mogelijk is dat een conservatieve partij als de CHU toch een progressief kiesrechtstandpunt heeft kunnen ontwikkelen tussen 1892/94 en 1917/19. Deze vraag vult een lacune op het gebied van de beeldvorming van de CHU. De twee kenmerken, namelijk behoudend en matig progressief, lijken onverenigbaar met elkaar. Een ander bijvoeglijk naamwoord dat onmisbaar is voor de CHU is: principieel. Dat woord verklaart heel veel van de standpunten die de CHU had en argumenten die gehanteerd zijn in Kamerhandelingen.Show less

In this...Show moreIn the present Javanese society, the sacred flower Widjojo Koesoemo is considered to be a myth with no reference on the once-existed court tradition to obtain the flower for Javanese king. In this research, I demonstrate the role of Widjojo Koesoemo flower and the ritual mission to obtain the flower in the court of Surakarta during the Dutch colonial period. Based on Javanese manuscripts, the mission to obtain Widjojo Koesoemo flower was an important tradition and could be traced back from Javanese mythology as early as 12th century. In the 19th century, both the flower and the mission were needed to build the legitimacy of the king of Surakarta. After coronation, a new king of the court of Surakarta would send a mission to obtain Widjojo Koesoemo. Due to the spiritual matters of this mission, Juru suranata, the court ritual leader, and kyai, the court’s religious leader from Masjid Agung of Surakarta were the key members of this mission. Certain challenges to the flower and the mission appeared when the Dutch scientists in the 19th century tried to demystify the sacred foundation of this flower by looking for it and then classified it into Linnaean taxonomy. I argue that the “silent” rejection of the Dutch finding by the court of Surakarta and continual missions to obtain the flower from 1830 - 1939 are evidenced of Javanese cultural persistence. From this tradition, the king’s rightful cultural authority over the entire kingdom of Surakarta remained unchanged even in the period of its political subjugation to the Dutch colonial government.Show less

On national levels trust in politicians and the political system is decreasing, satisfaction is low and protests are increasing. People feel not heard by their chosen representatives and some start to experiment with other forms of democracy. This discontent is especially visible in relation to the European Union that is accused to have severe democratic deficits. This started a debate on the current electoral representative system. This thesis investigates if the democratic deficit of the EU can be solved by introducing citizens’ bodies based on sortition, the random selection of citizens instead of electing representatives.Show less
Pieter Albert Bik (1798-1855), a Dutch colonial official, left behind an unpublished manuscript detailing his travels during his career both in Asia, especially in Japan and the Dutch East Indies,...Show morePieter Albert Bik (1798-1855), a Dutch colonial official, left behind an unpublished manuscript detailing his travels during his career both in Asia, especially in Japan and the Dutch East Indies, and in Europe, notably along the Rhine. A close examination of the manuscript suggests that Bik's interpretation of his travel experiences in Europe and overseas were remarkably similar, and that both were influenced by the burgeoning phenomenon of European tourism that was taking root along the Rhine at the time. A close reading of this source, and a brief comparative analysis, show that tourism indeed influenced the discourse of colonial travel much earlier than has so far been acknowledged. An examination of this influence calls to question several conventional presumptions of colonial history, and draws attention to a thus far seldom recognised character: the early colonial leisurely tourist. This analysis, however, requires - apart from primary research - a synthesis of the academic literatures on colonial travel on the one hand, and European tourist culture on the other.Show less

De nadruk ligt op het ontstaan en de ontwikkeling van topografische beeldtradities van de stad. Van iedere beeldtraditie heb ik geprobeerd vast te stellen met welke voorstelling de traditie aanving en welke stadsgezichten daar in de eeuwen erna op werden gebaseerd. Het onderzoek zal uiteindelijk leiden tot een groter inzicht in het ontstaan en de historische ontwikkeling van verschillende topografische voorstellingen en beeldtradities van Bergen op Zoom. In het onderzoek worden o.a. tekeningen, prenten en schilderijen van kunstenaars als Albrecht Dürer, Hans Bol en Cornelis Pronk besproken.Show less
