This is done in order to better understand the role of identity...Show moreIn this thesis an analysis is made of the British parliamentary debates on European integration in the period from 1957 to 1975. This is done in order to better understand the role of identity narratives in political debates in general and specifically the role of conceptions of and narratives on British national identity in these parliamentary debates on European integration. During this period the United Kingdom first left the initiative to create an EEC, only to apply for membership three years later in 1961. After two failed applications the UK became a member state in 1973, which received direct popular support through the 1975 ‘in-or-out’-referendum after the Wilson government had renegotiated the terms. In this thesis it is argued that national identity narratives actively shaped political opinion in these years and thus the political process as well. Political, economic and other types of arguments were deliberately linked to and intertwined with identity narratives with the goal of generating political effect. By means of this research and its results this study seeks to add to the historiography on Britain and the European integration process, which had been lacking both in research focusing on political debate as well as in research on the role of identity narratives therein.Show less

Publishers have arisen that abuse the Gold Open Access model, in which the author pays a fee to get his article published, to make money with so-called predatory journals. These publishers falsely claim to conduct peer review, which makes them more prone to publish fraudulent and plagiarised research. This thesis looks at three possible methods to stop predatory journals: black- and white-lists, open peer review systems and new metrics. Black- and whitelists have set up rules and regulations that credible publishers and journals should follow. Open peer review systems should make it harder for predatory publishers to make false claims about their peer review process. Metrics should measure more aspects of research impact and become less liable to gaming. The question is, which of these three methods is the best candidate to stop predatory journals. As all three methods have their drawbacks, especially for new but high quality journals, none of them stop predatory journals on its own can. Rather, we need a system in which researchers, publishers and reviewers communicate more openly about the research they create, disseminate and read. But above all, we need to find a way to take away incentives for researchers and publishers to engage in fraudulent practices.Show less

In particular, whether and why they chose to accept the existing British political structures during those years. The focus is on the constant re-assessment of the value of those institutions in times of crisis, and on which types of motivations played a part in the decisions that resulted from those perceptions and interpretations. The conclusion is that this constant re-assessment of their attitudes serves as a better overall explanation of the Labour Party's course during these years than ideological, structural or individual explanations - or at least adds to those.Show less

Il est presque impossible de donner une seule définition car le terme est multi-interprétable. En outre, l’expression intrigue, car il y a un côté d’interdit, quelque chose de caché qui rend curieux. Pendant la deuxième moitié du 18ème siècle, la classe sociale la plus élevée en France était ‘en plein libertinage’. Cette liberté de mœurs et ces valeurs décadentes n'étaient réservées qu'à la noblesse. Il y avait dans la société de l’époque une morale sexuelle ambiguë par rapport au rôle de la femme avec une éthique de l'obéissance et de la soumission. Le choix d'être vertueuse ou plutôt libertine forme le point de départ de la présente enquête sur la séduction du vice à cette époque. Pour notre recherche, nous distinguerons des personnages féminins vertueux et libertins dans le roman Les Liaisons Dangereuses de Laclos et dans l'œuvre Les infortunes de la vertu de Sade.Show less

Eerst geef ik informatie over de roman, het personage, emoties en ziektebeeld in China enzovoorts. Vervolgens maak ik een analyse aan de hand van fragmenten uit de roman en deze analyseer ik in het raamwerk van traditionele Chinese concepten die onder andere in de traditionele Chinese geneeskunde terug te vinden zijn. Na de analyse kwam ik tot de conclusie dat de emoties en het ziek zijn van Daiyu met elkaar verweven zijn. De manier waarop ze met elkaar verweven zijn is goed verklaarbaar aan de hand van traditioneel Chinese concepten.Show less

More than a thousand Chinese men, women...Show moreThis thesis examines the massacre of Chinese in Tangerang that occurred between late May and June 1946, following the Dutch occupation in Serpong, Tangerang. More than a thousand Chinese men, women, and children were killed in various places in the interior of Tangerang. This thesis argues that the massacre was not an incidental event, but had its roots in the social disorganization, economic instability, and the collapse of authority occasioned by the Dutch colonial regime and Japanese occupation. Although outbursts of violence in Indonesia have a long history, the Tangerang massacre is a unique case, as it was targeted at a specific population, and it was perpetrated by a specific religious group. Moreover, jawara was also included in local patterns of violence and played a useful role of intimidation of those considered a problem of local government. Perpetrators of anti-Chinese violence in Tangerang justified their actions by saying that the Chinese were aliens in the community, as well as non-believers. The Tangerang massacre was only one in a long series of cases of anti-Chinese violence all over Java, in which both the Dutch and the Indonesian Republic failed to protect the lives of the Chinese population during the Indonesian Revolutionary period. Although considerable efforts were made by the Republic to protect the Chinese in order to enlist their support, the Republic's military forces were insufficient to prevent hostile acts by extremist elements whose animosity had been directed against the Chinese. Soon after the massacre in Tangerang, more cases of anti-Chinese violence emerged in other parts of Indonesia: Bagan Siapi-Api (1946), Cirebon (1947), Cibadak (1947), and Cilimus (1947). To date, no specific research has been conducted to examine the communal violence in those areas.Show less

In migration studies, the socio-historical analysis of the relationship between migrants and food practices provides a fresh perspective on the cultural encounters between communities. The aim of my research is to explore the private space of the Dutch eating habits and the more or less successful integration of foreign kitchens. In detail, this paper looks at how and to what extent have foreign cuisines, especially the Indonesian and Moroccan, affected the Dutch eating culture from 1950 until 2000. The results show trends of appropriation of culinary knowledge and adoption of culinary authenticity.Show less

This study aimed to analyse the ways in which intonation is understood, and how this differs between English native speakers and Dutch speakers of English. Based on work and research by Hoorn, Mitrofanova, Hewings, So and Best, and Grabe, Rosner, Garcia-Albea and Zhou—from which one may gather that non-native speakers will find it both more problematic to distinguish between different intonation patterns as well as understand them see the following chapter for an elucidation on these theories—it was hypothesised that native speakers would have less difficulty with understanding intonation in general, and that Dutch speakers would have a more ambiguous understanding of certain types of intonation patterns.Show less

This study attempts to detect...Show moreStudies have shown that many people tend to rely on linguistic structures in their mother tongue to produce responses when writing or speaking in a target language. This study attempts to detect interlingual errors —that is, the errors which are caused by mother tongue interference. Moreover, in this research an inventory was made after investigating the difficulties encountered by native speakers of Greek learning Turkish in the Department of Turkish and Modern Asian Studies at the University of Athens. Special attention is also given to studying the relation of these errors and difficulties given the fact that Greek and Turkish are structurally and typologically so different. These findings provide enough clues to conclude that the interference of the mother tongue is the major cause of errors at the early stages of language learning with only a few cases based on intralingual errors. Some recommendations have been made in the treatment of errors.Show less

In the first part authorship is investigated. The development of the word ‘author’ is given and several philosophers is given some attention to come to the final definition of ‘authorship’. Along the way the findings will be coupled with Te Winkel’s work and life. This will eventually lead to a definition of Te Winkel’s poetical activities. Was it authorship or recreational writing? In the second part of this thesis a full edition of Te Winkel’s book Lycoris: Bundel minnedichten 1864 - 1874 is given.Show less
