This growth of cultural exchanges has resulted in many opening Japanese establishments outside of Japan. However, whilst such restaurants may serve Japanese dishes, the dishes they serve are, in many cases, stereotyped, presenting a different image of Japanese gastronomy. As a result, customers who are unaware of such misrepresentations assume such dishes are authentic, leading towards a perpetuation of stereotypes on Japanese cuisine. Thus, this paper looks in to the possible reasons why Japanese cuisine has been stereotyped outside of Japan, and the motivations that foster such misrepresentations. The paper begins with a brief historical look at the beginnings of the Japanese gastronomic stereotyping. Afterwards, the paper examines the concepts of globalization and orientalism as factors in creating misrepresentations. Lastly, the paper is rounded off by a short study conducted of Japanese restaurants in the United States, South America, and Europe, as a means of examining a third concept that aids in continuing such stereotypes.Show less

Show less

These serialised drama series broadcasted by state broadcaster NHK over the course of half a year, have induced large-scale tourism to sites related to the film locations in the series. The success of such “contents tourism” has a significant economic effect, inspiring producers to choose rural areas coping with depopulation and economic loss. This thesis takes the series Hiyokko, broadcasted in 2017, as an example to explore the field of contents tourism and its cultural framework and history. By investigating the content and narrative of asadora, as well as the economic impact of rural revitalisation, this thesis provides an extensive study on asadora from a socio-cultural and economic perspective.Show less

In this article, several ways in which the Japanese government will try to attract as many tourists as possible will be covered, with the 'Cool Japan' strategy as introduced by the MOFA in 2002 as the red line. The strategy will be considered from several political views, including the Soft Power view as suggested by some. In analyzing (tourism) spaces, Foucault's Heterotopias will be used as theoretical groundwork. It will become clear that the Cool Japan strategy of the Japanese government carefully selects and combines several cultural products in order to build and project a politically meaningful image to the outside world.Show less

Show less

The purpose of this project is to locate heritage in the local area and organizing it into a regional 'story' that is consumable for a public both within and outside of Japan. While the project itself is organized by the Bunkacho, a lot of organisational responsibility is held by local players. With local heritage organisations, local authorities and government each playing their role, should we see this new project as top-down consumentarism or bottom-up conversation of local heritage by local people? This is the question I aimed to answer within this essay.Show less

Past approaches to pilgrimage have either been blind to the particularities of pilgrimage across cultures, or placed too much stress on the contested character of pilgrimage sites. My primary aim is to show how the two discourses that informed the Taipei Tianhou-gong in turn in the past, at present do not compete or exclude one another, but rather appear to run parallel. Before the Taipei Tianhou-gong as it stands today was built, the site was home to the Kobo-ji, a temple constructed during the Japanese period that functioned as the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism in colonial Taiwan. The Kobo-ji eventually served as the starting point of a copy of the Shikoku Henro (a 1,200-kilometer-long Japanese pilgrimage circuit) in Taipei. After the Japanese left Taiwan in 1945, the Kobo-ji was remodeled by the Taiwanese and dedicated to the Fujianese sea goddess Mazu. Today, and with the current popularity of the actual Shikoku Henro among the Taiwanese, we see how the Shingon Buddhist heritage of the Taipei Tianhou-gong is in the process of being reactivated. This reactivation presents us with a significant case of a pilgrimage site where meaning is not contested, but which is instead characterized by a parallelism of discourses.Show less

(1838-1911).Show less

Social media has proved to play a pivotal role in providing new ways of customer engagement and encouraging customer’s buying behavior, of which a concept known as “gamification” has grown out to become a global phenomenon. In this thesis I will provide an answer to the question of how the concept of gamification has developed within the Japanese market and for what purposes it is used in contemporary Japan, in both commercial and non-commercial contexts. I will demonstrate how gamification can be used as a mechanism to urge on a user’s intrinsic motivation, by utilizing extrinsically motivating game elements such as rewards. Implementing gamification in a company’s business strategy can be an effective way to engage customers, which then has the potential of establishing new, or strengthening existing relationships. This will be demonstrated based on a variety of examples within the Japanese context, including convenience-store chain Seven-Eleven Japan and Japanese idol group AKB48.Show less

The purpose of the survey was, first, to understand whether visitors conceive looking at a garden view as a healing experience and, second, to explore the reasons why it is so. The results confirmed that contemplating a garden is perceived as a relaxing activity that inspires positive feelings - as supported by previous research in environmental psychology. The elements of the garden view that inspired these feelings were examined and grouped into three categories: nature, aesthetics and space-time.Show less
