Hierbij behandel ik het globaliseringsdiscours...Show moreIn deze scriptie heb ik gekeken naar de rol van de roman en de schrijver in de zogenaamde 'nieuwe wereld'; de wereld in een proces van globalisering. Hierbij behandel ik het globaliseringsdiscours en ga ik dieper in op modernisme, postmodernisme en vermarkting. Daarna ga ik verder in op psychische en filosofische aspecten die vanuit de twee romans die ik analyseer ('Chaos en rumoer' van Joost Zwagerman en 'Fantoompijn' van Arnon Grunberg) te koppelen zijn aan de huidige westerse samenleving. Een focuspunt is hierbij het verschijnsel van het writer's block.Show less

Met mijn paper wil ik ingaan op de verschillende manieren waarop gender wordt ingezet als een middel om te reflecteren op turbulente politieke, maatschappelijke en religieuze ontwikkelingen in het...Show moreMet mijn paper wil ik ingaan op de verschillende manieren waarop gender wordt ingezet als een middel om te reflecteren op turbulente politieke, maatschappelijke en religieuze ontwikkelingen in het Egypte tussen de late jaren vijftig tot aan de vroege jaren zeventig. Waar het mij hier om gaat is dat bepaalde noties van gender hun herkomst vinden in terugkerende symboliek. Culturele representaties van vrouwelijkheid en mannelijkheid dienen meer doelen dan alleen het weerspiegelen van vraagstukken rond emancipatie. Ze kunnen óók politiek of religieus ingezet worden, of reflecteren op existentiële vraagstukken die iets zeggen over de menselijke conditie in zijn algemeenheid.Show less

Advanced communication and widespread Internet access, often considered positive outcomes of globalization, in fact help the trafficking industry to function efficiently. Popular tourist destinations in Panama and Mexico with high demand for sex tourism are researched to assess their role as sex hubs in the trafficking debate.Show less

Van Lennep explicitly utilizes his authorship and the storyteller within the book to express his opinion on these subjects. I have first distinguished three levels of 'author's commentary' and then applied these levels to selected parts of the novel. Van Lennep assumes the role of the public intellectual to take the reader by the hand and see what he wants the reader to see.Show less

This...Show moreRecent fairy-tale film releases by Disney show that the company is attempting to retell the classical fairy-tale films from new perspectives, especially featuring stronger fairy-tale heroines. This change is the result of a cry for subversion after feminist writers discovered values of a strictly patriarchal society in fairy tales, and they therefore campaigned for the abolition of female passivity in Disney’s fairy-tale films. This thesis will examine the theme of female agency and villainy in Disney’s fairy-tale films. Comparing and contrasting the original Walt Disney Sleeping Beauty (1959) adaptation with the same studio’s most recent film version Maleficent (2014), this thesis argues that the two movies reveal an apparent shift in the way they explore and present female identity, from valuing passivity to celebrating agency, and closely related to this, a growing sympathy towards the figure of the morally ambiguous villain who appears to seek redemption through motherhood. The notion of moral ambiguity will be discussed in relation to the villainous female character, and the differences in the portrayal of their agency compared to the agency attributed to the heroine.Show less

Primarily focusing on two towns in Miyagi prefecture which...Show moreThis thesis considers the role of social capital in the post-disaster recovery of fishermen and farmers in a coastal and rural region. Primarily focusing on two towns in Miyagi prefecture which were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the resulting tsunami in 2011, this thesis considers how the possession of cultural and social capital can hinder or enable recovery and company growth. Through the use of three case studies involving local fishermen and farmers who were affected by the disaster, this thesis argues that social capital plays an important role in enabling the recovery and growth of affected individuals and companies. In addition, not only the possession, but also the characteristics of said social capital determines to what extent and for what purposes social capital can be used to achieve recovery.Show less
