Tegelijkertijd is sinds de jaren 60 zowel de islam als algemene spiritualiteit buiten de muren van gevestigde religieuze instituten sterk gegroeid. Nederland is divers, de vraag is dan, is er 'iets' dat de Nederlandse samenleving bijeenbrengt. En kan dit 'iets' een Civil Relgion genoemd worden? Vanuit sociologische methodologie, aan de hand van literatuuronderzoek over Rousseau's, Durkheim's en Bellah's werken over Civil Religion, en kwantitatief casusonderzoek tracht dit onderzoek deze vraag te beantwoorden. Dit onderzoek leidt tot de conclusie dat Nederland daadwerkelijk een Civil Religion heeft. Rousseau's visie komt tot leven in de vorm van burgerschapsvorming onderwijs op de basis- en middelbare scholen in Nederland. Durkheims sociale kijk op Civil Religion kan teruggevonden worden op de verbondenheid die Nederlanders voelen bij het uitdragen van gedeelde sociale rituelen.Show less

It analyzes these symbols using a Durkheimian approach, which...Show moreThis thesis research is about the symbols that appear in the interview reports of the spiritual experiences of seven Iranian Armenians. It analyzes these symbols using a Durkheimian approach, which is comprised of Émile Durkheim’s (1858-1917) and Wilbur Urban’s (1873-1952) theories. Specifically, the social functions of symbols are researched, following Durkheim, and the meaning layers of symbols are analyzed, following Urban. The Iranian Armenian symbols turn out to vary in their social function, and consist of a concrete and an abstract meaning layer. Most of them trace their origin to the participants’ Armenian Orthodox Christian denomination. The symbols that do not, are still influenced by the group religion concerning their meanings. This implies that the group religion is important for the meaning assignment of individuals.Show less

Exploring the movement’s...Show moreThis paper researches the way in which the Dutch GroeneKerken movement invokes ecotheology in its promotion of environmentalism amongst Christians in the Netherlands. Exploring the movement’s appeal to ecotheology will tell us something about the way in which Christian communities in the Netherlands have been adjusting to the rising awareness of the gravity of the environmental crisis. The paper relies upon an interpretative research method. Larger theoretical ideas about ecotheology have been used to make sense of the way in which the GroeneKerken movement promotes environmentalism amongst Christians in the Netherlands. This involved qualitative analysis of the movement through the lens of three different hermeneutical keys for interpreting the Bible ecologically: ecocentrism, environmental justice and environmental stewardship. It will be demonstrated that the GroeneKerken movement implicitly and explicitly invokes the ecotheological notions of ecocentrism, environmental justice and environmental stewardship in its promotion of environmentalism.Show less

The deadly COVID-19 pandemic, resulting from the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has been ravaging the lives and livelihoods of people all over the world, and the people of India are no exception. Primarily cultural, ethnic or religious minority communities are expected to be disproportionately impacted by the virus and its aftermath (Al Saba 2020). In an attempt to increase international awareness of the situation of marginalised minority communities during this global crisis, this thesis will cover the impact of COVID-19 on one such community, Indian Muslims.Show less
In deze scriptie bediscussieer ik op welke wijze het dispuut tussen de dichter Abu Nuwas en de Mu'taziliet Ibrahim al-Nazzam de conceptualisatie van Abu Nuwas van religieuze tolerantie, zowel intra...Show moreIn deze scriptie bediscussieer ik op welke wijze het dispuut tussen de dichter Abu Nuwas en de Mu'taziliet Ibrahim al-Nazzam de conceptualisatie van Abu Nuwas van religieuze tolerantie, zowel intra- als interreligieus, illustreert. Door twee wijngedichten van Abu Nuwas te analyseren en in hun literaire en theologische context te plaatsen, verhelder ik dat de dichter een brede opvatting van religieuze tolerantie, naar zowel christenen als moslims, had. Deze opvatting was gegrond in zijn ruime conceptualisatie van de vergevingsgezindheid van God en zijn nadruk op de onwetendheid van de mens. Door al-Nazzam's legalistische en restrictieve lezing van de islam te bekritiseren, zet Abu Nuwas een alternatieve lezing van God's attitude tegenover wijndrinken voort en bepleit hij dat de islam moslims verplicht tolerant te zijn jegens elkaar, evenals tegenover niet-moslims. De enige zonde die niet is te vergeven is het associeren van andere wezens met God. Zodoende beargumenteer ik dat het dispuut tussen Abu Nuwas en de Mu' taziliet Ibrahim al-Nazzam verheldert dat Abu Nuwas een brede opvatting van intra- en interreligieuze tolerantie had en dat deze was gegrond in een lezing van de islam die menselijke onwetendheid en God's vergevingsgezindheid benadrukte.Show less
