With the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster, mother's would yet again take up their motherhood and use in such a way that they are supposedly the expert concerning their children's well being. This research will analyze the activities of the Fukushima Children Network in relation to the concept of civil society in Japan as coined by Jurgen Habermas. The main research question will be: What is the effect of Fukushima Children Network's actions in the public sphere? More specifically, did their actions lead to a growing awareness of the dangers, such as radioactive contamination, that the use of nuclear energy brings about? Starting with only a few people and setting out their course of action, they gained notoriety throughout the country. Also having inspired other members of the public to take action on their own, it can be argued that they have come quite far within the public sphere.Show less

In Japan, women...Show moreThis thesis explores one of the solutions to the problem of a declining labour force Japan is faced with: increasing women’s employment, also after marriage and/or childbirth. In Japan, women generally occupy a significantly lower position than men in the workplace. Through in-depth interviews with Japanese women, I have found answers to the following questions: What do Japanese women think of this inequality? Are they demotivated by a lack of prospects? Additionally, I explore what they consider important in a job, taking both content and conditions of employment into account. I argue that when the elements women consider important in work are determined, future laws and regulations aimed at increasing women’s employment rate can take these elements into account. Consequently, such laws will be more efficient in drawing more women to the labour force.Show less

Een interessante vertegenwoordiger van een andere cultuur is Saladin. Deze historische tegenstander van de twaalfde-eeuwse kruisvaarders speelt de hoofdrol in verschillende Middelnederlandse teksten. Saladin krijgt in deze teksten tegenstrijdige eigenschappen: hij is een heidense vijand, maar ook een edelmoedige held. In dit onderzoek ga ik dieper in op de representaties van Saladin in de verschillende afschriften van Van den coninc Saladijn ende van Hughen van Tabaryen.Show less

Op basis van hun onderzoek verdelen zij...Show moreDeleuze en Guattari hebben de ontwikkeling van de samenleving onderzocht met het oog op de verschillende rollen van fluxen en verlangenproductie. Op basis van hun onderzoek verdelen zij samenlevingsvormen onder in een primitieve, despotische en kapitalistische samenleving. In de despotische samenleving zijn de verlangenproducties van de mensen door de Despoot in slavernij gedwongen. De Despoot onderwerpt de verlangenproductie door het te coderen en het in banen te leiden. Hoewel slavernij tegenwoordig formeel is afgeschaft, concluderen Deleuze en Guattari dat de huidige kapitalistische samenleving toch een bepaalde vorm van slavernij behelst. Nog steeds wordt de verlangenproductie van de moderne samenleving beheerst, zij het door de kenmerkende axiomatiek van het kapitalisme. De vrijheid van verlangen is in het geding. Voor de bevrijding uit deze slavernij stellen Deleuze en Guattari een bepaald soort anarchie voor. Deze anarchie houdt een ‘absolutie deterritorialisatie’ in. Dat wil zeggen: de verlangenproductie en fluxen moet hun volkomen vrije beloop krijgen. Hoe deze samenlevingsvorm concreet gestalte krijgt, beschrijven zij aan de hand van de ‘oorlogsmachine’ en de ‘nomadensamenleving’. De nomaden zetten zich af tegen het Kapitalisme/de Staat, die als overkoepelende macht verlangenproductie aan zich onderwerpt. De nomaden en de Staat zijn continu met elkaar in oorlog en zij verbinden zich zo met de oorlogsmachine. Maar als een nomade van buitenaf tegen de Staat vecht, werkt de nomade de Staat in de hand. De Staat ontleent zijn bestaansgrond aan de oorlog die tegen hem gevoerd wordt. Men moet daarom van binnenuit de Staat de macht van de Staat weerstreven. Hoe? Door binnen de Staat een nomadische levenswijze, een ‘nomadisch burgerschap’ uit te oefenen. Door zich van binnenuit te onttrekken aan de Staatsmacht, breekt de mens de ketenen die het opgelegd heeft gekregen. Een continue onttrekking aan de Staatsmacht levert een bepaald soort anarchie op. Meerdere concepten en ideeën van Deleuze en Guattari zijn waarschijnlijk geïnspireerd geweest door het (politiek) antropologische onderzoek van Pierre Clastres naar bepaalde indianenstammen. Meerdere indianenstammen kenmerkte Clastres als ‘samenlevingen tegen de Staat’ (Societies against the State). Voor een helderder en concreter begrip van wat Deleuze en Guattari bedoelen met hun idee van een anarchistische samenleving, onderzoek ik in hoeverre de anarchistische samenleving samenhangt met de indiaanse samenlevingsvormen die Clastres onderzocht heeft.Show less

This thesis analyzed the development of discourse on extra-European art in art historical surveys published between 1842 and 1900 and how this discourse was influenced by the development and...Show moreThis thesis analyzed the development of discourse on extra-European art in art historical surveys published between 1842 and 1900 and how this discourse was influenced by the development and institutionalisation of art history and by discourses on extra-European arts from other, related, scientific disciplines. It argues that the selective influence of art history as an institutionalizing discipline and other scholarly disciplines with an interest in extra- European art enlarged, changed and complicated the understanding of extra-European art as expressed in these discourses. Moreover, it substantiates that while certain dimensions of the understanding of extra-European art may have seemed to stay constant, this does not constitute a uniform understanding of this art. The findings are based on the analysis of the Handbuch der Kunstgeschichte (1842) by Franz Kugler, the Handbuch der Kunstgeschichte (1855) by Anton Springer and the Geschichte der Kunst aller Zeiten und Völker (1900) by Karl Woermann with the use of the method of Critical Discourse Analysis, which investigates not just the texts but also their scholarly environment, and an extensive close reading of the three surveys.Show less
On 30 January 1972 the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) organised a peaceful, yet illegal march in Derry, Northern-Ireland. This march was one of a series of marches NICRA had...Show moreOn 30 January 1972 the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) organised a peaceful, yet illegal march in Derry, Northern-Ireland. This march was one of a series of marches NICRA had organised in January 1972 to protest against interment. During the march in Derry, the British Army opened fire on the demonstrators, which led to the death of thirteen civilians. Fifteen other civilians were wounded, one of whom died a few months later due to his wounds. This day is more commonly known as ‘Bloody Sunday’. Two days later, the British government announced that an inquiry would be established under the Tribunals of Inquiry Act 1921 to investigate what had happened in Derry, and more importantly, why it happened. An inquiry is set up ‘where is has been resolved by both Houses of Parliament that it is expedient that a tribunal be established for inquiring into a definite matter described in the Resolution as of urgent public importance’. The report, led by Lord Chief Justice Widgery and therefore known as the Widgery Report, was published within eleven weeks, on 19 April. It concluded that ‘there is no reason to suppose that the soldiers would have opened fire if they had not been fired upon first’. About the victims, both deceased and wounded, Widgery concluded that although none of them were proved to have been armed when they were shot, there was a ‘strong suspicion that some [of the victims] had been firing weapons or handling bombs in the course of the afternoon and that yet others had been closely supporting them’. Not everyone agreed with this ‘official’ account of the events of 30 January. Some opponents to the findings have been re-enacting the Bloody Sunday march annually since 1973 in order to both show their disapproval of the Widgery Report, and to keep the memory of the victims alive. After twenty-five years of commemorating Bloody Sunday, and six years after a justice campaign for the victims had started, the then-British Prime Minister Tony Blair agreed to a new inquiry in 1998. This inquiry, known as the Saville Inquiry, was published in June 2010, twelve years after it had been set up. Contrary to the conclusions of the Widgery Report, the Saville Report concluded that it was the British Army, and not the Irish Republican Army (IRA) or the demonstrators, had fired the first shot, that the actions of the army were unjustifiable, and that the victims of the gunfire had been innocent. This paper looks at the annual Bloody Sunday commemorations from 1973 to 2013 in Derry to see what the effect of the public inquiries of 1972 and 1998 was on the perception of what happened at Bloody Sunday.Show less
