Door het belichten van het economische aspect van de relatie tussen krijgsmacht en de maatschappij is getracht om een bijdrage te leveren aan de New Military History en specifiek de armed forces and society approach. Duidelijk is geworden dat zowel de soldaat als de officier van het garnizoen een economische waarde had voor de stad. Bepalend voor het antwoord op de vraag hoe de Haagse economie heeft kunnen profiteren van het garnizoen was de samenstelling van de economie. De kern van de Haagse economie werd gevormd door de handels- en dienstensector, die gedomineerd werd door de kleding-, juweliers- en horecabranche. Dit onderzoek toont aan dat deze branches optimaal hebben kunnen profiteren van de meest omvangrijke uitgaven, namelijk de persoonlijke uitgaven van de manschappen en officieren (behoudens de uitgaven die vielen onder de collectieve bijdragen) in het garnizoen.Show less

In deze kritische discoursanalyse staat de Commissie Seksuele Problematiek Buitenlandse Werknemers centraal. Uit het onderzoek komt naar voren welke seksuele problematiek met deze groep werd geassocieerd en waarom, en wordt duidelijk waarom gemengde relaties tussen buitenlandse mannen en Nederlandse vrouwen geproblematiseerd werden. Hiermee draagt het zowel bij aan literatuur over arbeidsmigratie als literatuur over gemengde relaties.Show less

In deze scriptie wordt in een diachrone vergelijking geanalyseerd welke motieven militairen in hun egodocumenten opvoerden voor de inzet van brand. Vervolgens zal worden onderzocht of en hoe deze motieven zich laten duiden binnen een bepaald raamwerk, bijvoorbeeld binnen de environcide-these van historicus Emmanuel Kreike, of binnen militair-strategische kaders. Zo beoogt deze scriptie niet alleen inzicht te bieden in de vraag of er sprake was van continuïteit dan wel verandering wat betreft de inzet van brand als wapen in voormalig Nederlands-Indië, maar ook in de vraag of en hoe de opgevoerde motieven zich laten categoriseren.Show less

Central to the analysis are MEPs'...Show moreThis thesis traces the influence of various party groups' ideas in the European Parliament's approach to obtaining direct elections during the period 1965-1979. Central to the analysis are MEPs' viewpoints on whether an increase of the Parliament's powers was desirable before direct elections (maximalist) or direct elections should precede an expansion of its powers (minimalist). Using records of the EP's various committees and the plenary, it argues that the alignment of a majority within the socialist and Christian-democrat groups, strengthened by matching ideas among liberal MEPs, on the desire to correct the Community's (perceived to be) undemocratic institutional balance by improving the Parliament's powers, created a maximalist majority that, until 1975, steered the EP's approach to direct elections towards prioritizing the expansion of power over an increase in democratic legitimacy. Subsequently, these groups' ideas about the expected balance between powers and representativity shifted the Parliament to a more minimalist approach of focusing on obtaining direct elections following the improvement of the Parliament's powers in 1975 through the budgetary treaties.Show less

While French...Show moreCanada, renowned as a multicultural country was not always so. Dominated by two ethnic groups, the French and British, Canada found it difficult to shed the prejudices of the past. While French Canadians began to seek an identity independent of France and Canada, British Canadians sought to maintain their historic ties to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. The most symbolic indication of this connected rested in Canada's flag, the Red Ensign. It served as a nostalgic reminder of an imperial-British past, as well as an overt sign of conquest and thus yielded passionate support, apathy, and disdain from across the maturing country. Whereas previous attempts to settle the "Flag Question" failed, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, through a career in British and United Nations circles alike, bore witness to the consequences that a divided people would have on its state. He respected the traditions of the past but viewed them as outdated and hindering the emergence of a Canadian national identity that was open from those of all ethnic backgrounds, languages, and location within Canada. A new flag, featuring a domestically grown symbol - the maple leaf, was deemed to be the most appropriate by politicians, scholars, and the public alike. The Maple Leaf flag would take over for the Red Ensign after a heated debate that questioned what it meant to be "Canadian".Show less
