Met deze schildering als uitgangspunt wordt er geëvalueerd op welke manieren de laatste graaf van het palazzo, Guido Chigi-Saracini, een muzikale beeldtaal gebruikte in de verbouwing van 1914 en welke doeleinden dit dient. Hiertoe wordt er gekeken naar de verzamelgeschiedenis van de collectie van het palazzo en naar muziekpatronage van de voorouders van de graaf. Zo wordt de muziekcultuur in Siena ten tijde van de Chigi, de 16e en 17e eeuw, vergeleken met de muziekcultuur ten tijde van graaf Chigi-Saracini in de vroeg 20ste eeuw. De muziekpatronage en haar politieke en culturele doeleinden in de twee verschillende perioden staan hierin centraal. In dit artikel wordt één van de rotan stoel ontwerpen van de Nederlandse binnenhuisarchitect Ida Falkenberg-Liefrinck uit 1936 geanalyseerd naast de stalen buisstoel, de W1, van Mart Stam uit 1927...Show moreIn dit artikel wordt één van de rotan stoel ontwerpen van de Nederlandse binnenhuisarchitect Ida Falkenberg-Liefrinck uit 1936 geanalyseerd naast de stalen buisstoel, de W1, van Mart Stam uit 1927 om aan te tonen dat rotan een plek verdiende in de discussie over het gebruik van meubels uit stalen buis of in hout in Nederland tussen 1925 en 1940. Door de rotan stoel daarna in de context van functionalisme en vormgeving en in de bredere discussie over stalen buis versus rotan tevens in deze periode te plaatsen, hoopt dit artikel aan te tonen dat rotan net zo functionalistisch was als de stalen buis. Met haar stoelontwerpen heeft Falkenberg-Liefrinck het rotan stoelontwerp uit de ambachtelijke sfeer gehaald en gemoderniseerd. Hiermee bewees zij dat functionaliteit niet afhankelijk was van één materiaalsoort maar dat er meerdere mogelijkheden waren. Evenals stalen buis een favoriet materiaal is gebleven, wordt rotan ook nog steeds gebruikt voor interieurs.Show less

Door visuele analyse te combineren met interdisciplinaire...Show moreDeze scriptie onderzoekt hoe het kunstwerk The Graf Zeppelin van Walton Ford de complexe dynamieken tussen mens en dier weerspiegelt. Door visuele analyse te combineren met interdisciplinaire studies naar mens-dier relaties, worden de visuele en tekstuele elementen van het kunstwerk onderzocht. Het onderzoek richt zich allereerst op de representatie van de aap en hoe haar weergave de menselijke perceptie van dieren reflecteert. Ford wekt empathie op bij de toeschouwer door gebruik te maken van antropomorfisme en Susie in een menselijke omgeving te zetten en menselijke emoties toe te kennen. Het wordt duidelijk dat Susie is afgebeeld als object van observatie als gevolg van menselijke dominantie. Vervolgens onderzoekt deze scriptie de invloed van het medium, namelijk hoe Fords gebruik van natuurhistorische illustratietechnieken en kalligrafisch schrift de interpretatie en betekenis van het werk beïnvloedt. Deze elementen roepen historische context op en geven indirecte kritiek op de menselijk bewondering voor en exploitatie van de natuur. De combinatie van tekst en illustratie creëert een synergetisch effect, waardoor de toeschouwer meer betrokken raakt bij het verhaal van Susie.Show less
This article explores the queer activist potential of Thailand’s Boys Love (BL) series, through an analysis of the television series Not Me (2021-2022) directed by Nuchy Anucha Boonyawatana (1981...Show moreThis article explores the queer activist potential of Thailand’s Boys Love (BL) series, through an analysis of the television series Not Me (2021-2022) directed by Nuchy Anucha Boonyawatana (1981-present). Through an investigation of the history and transnational glocalization of the BL genre, originally a genre of homoerotic novels published in Japan for a primarily heterosexual female audience, it’s transformation into a genre of media known as series wai in Thailand is shown. In recent years this genre has grown exponentially and has gone through a tremendous change since its Japanese origins. In this paper, with the help of the case study Not Me, I theorize the queer activist potential of the current Thai BL media. I argue that both through explicit references to the current political climate in Thailand and through the advertising strategies adopted for this series, the series normalizes queer identities and actively calls for queer rights in the country. The genre, thus, while originating from a literary genre produced for the enjoyment of a heterosexual female audience, has become more than simply entertainment for women. It’s current reach is to a much larger and global audience and has a political and social impact on Thailand. Therefore I argue that this series and the BL genre has had a positive activist influence on the ongoing political debate regarding marriage equality in Thailand and endorses the call for same-sex marriage that activist have asked for in the past years.Show less

Through an exploration of a selection of works...Show moreA greatly experimental artist as well as a nostalgic traditionalist, Edgar Degas had a deeply complex relationship with the process of fragmentation. Through an exploration of a selection of works from his oeuvre, as well as a brief discussion of his own home, I aim to show how fragmentation is related to Degas’ realist aims of examining contemporary society. Degas created art that proudly showed fragmented objects and made works that could be considered ‘fragments of time’ themselves. He did so by inventively cropping and cutting compositions, employing the temporal and material dimensions of fragmentation in order to explore modern life. At the same time, he was deeply distraught by the state of modernity, and the carelessness of others in treating their belongings. He appreciated objects that were conventionally seen as broken to the point of worthlessness and exhibited them in his home, where they formed a new unity in their relation to other objects.Show less

In the course of the research, I answered how the installation Umfanekiso wesibuko challenges anthropocentrism. The paper intends to characterize the promise of a new species between the human and the non-human animal. With the assistance of Giovanni Aloi´s theory of ´speculative taxidermy´ and Eduardo Viveiros de Castro´s theory called ´Amerindian perspectivism´, I underlined that the artwork fosters a great appreciation for non-human animals and suggests a bodily and spiritual bond between the species suggested. Therefore I concluded that Umfanekiso wesibuko contests anthropocentrism because the installation promotes that the binary categorization of human and non-human animals is insufficient and needs to be reformed.Show less

Het fotoboek The Lottery (2023) van de Amerikaanse fotograaf...Show moreSinds de jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw werd het archief als statisch fenomeen onder de loep genomen in de zogenaamde archival turn. Het fotoboek The Lottery (2023) van de Amerikaanse fotograaf Melissa Catanese (1979) is een voorbeeld van een werk dat te categoriseren is als archival art, een kunstvorm die reflecteert op deze verschuiving binnen het discours. In deze scriptie wordt aan de hand van interdisciplinaire literatuur over archieftheorie, historiografie, sociologie en fotografietheorie geanalyseerd hoe debatten met betrekking tot de waarheidsfunctie van het fotografisch archief inzicht bieden in The Lottery. In het fotoboek wordt materiaal gecombineerd uit verschillende typen archieven, waardoor de geselecteerde foto’s een onduidelijke herkomst hebben. Het proces van selectie en combinatie toont aan hoe de betekenis van fotografie binnen het archief ambigue is. Hierdoor kan het fotoboek worden gezien als een reflectie op het archief als een heterotopie. The Lottery wordt daarnaast besproken in relatie tot historiografische kwesties met betrekking tot narratief en fictie. The Lottery maakt gebruik van parafictieve strategieën, waarin de waarheidsfunctie van fotografie bevraagd wordt door een anachronistische lezing bij de kijker uit te lokken. De nieuwe betekenis die de foto’s krijgen in de context van het fotoboek zijn gebaseerd op vanzelfsprekendheden met betrekking tot gearchiveerde fotografie en realiteit. Dit toont aan hoe feit en fictie met elkaar verwikkeld zijn in dit werk, om deze eigenschap van het medium te bevragen.Show less

Het is een poging van Dastan om ‘vergeten’ te materialiseren. In dit essay wordt ingegaan op de rol die materiaal en toeschouwers spelen in Memory Burn 1-9 in het proces van het herinneren. Zo wordt er met een new materialist theoretisch raamwerk van Maria Zirra gekeken naar hoe het toekennen van agency aan de verbrande discs hun rol slechts beperkt beïnvloedt. Tevens is er onderzocht hoe de destructie van de discs juist materiële herinneringen toevoegt in plaats van verwijdert. De invloed van de toeschouwer blijkt essentieel tijdens het proces van betekenisgeving aan de verbrande discs, wat zowel bij de absent presence theorie van Jacques Derrida als de ideeën van punctum en ‘that-has-been’ van Roland Barthes naar voren komt. Daarnaast laten de fetish theory van Christian Metz en social memories zoals Aleida Assmann die omschrijft, zien hoe het proces van het verbranden naast verlies ook verlangen en herkenning creëert bij toeschouwers. Het verbranden van de discs blijkt dan ook niet enkel een representatie van ‘vergeten’ te zijn, maar dient juist als toegang tot herinneringen van toeschouwers.Show less

A case study of Katarzyna Kozyra’s Pyramid of Animals can be considered valuable, given that it also features a video of an animal’s slaughter next to the sculpture. Artworks including taxidermy can gather greatly varying receptions, which is the base for this paper. Commonly, ecological and participatory art practices and exhibitions take place within four walls of white cube galleries or project spaces where they reach an already initiated and versed art viewing audience. Meanwhile the public sphere is managed by city governments and cannot be intervened with by civilians who do live in the spaces as their everyday surroundings. This paper looks at two different methods of artistic practices and exhibitions that take place in curated environments made by artists as well as interventions in public spaces by inhabitants of an environment in order to understand how artistic interventions can play a role in the reclaiming livability in the urban landscape. These two approaches will be analyzed through two different case studies.The paper comes to the finding that artists and urban interventionists need to collaborate to build a sustainable and engaged practice.Show less

This is achieved by examining Dall-E’s productions through the lens of historic texts, namely Walter Benjamin’s text on ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Technological Reproducibility’ and Leo Tolstoy’s book ‘What is Art’, further supported by contemporary literature on artificial creativity in relation to the remaining role of the artist. The resulting analysis indicates that Dall-E’s production process is divided as framed by Marxist definitions, thereby making it difficult to trace artistic mastery. In the following section, the analysis of creativity results in the idea that alienation in Dall-E is better understood as a shaded artistic freedom. Contrastingly, in the final section Dall-E shows that it can overcome its own alienating aspects by becoming universal and multi-usable, aligning democratic results.Show less

While devoid of parametric modeling tools, these proto-parametric designs demonstrate a profound communicative capacity in articulating and organizing society’s heterogeneous nature. In investigating three case studies between 1999 and 2002, this research highlights a shift towards a heightened Urban Relationality and Urban Functionalism. Contextualized within the digital turn, the examples coincide in their integration of architectural semiology and a focus on socio-spatial relations. The designs foster positive spillovers within their proximate social and urban environments by transcending modernism’s functionalism through multi-functional approaches and an aestheticized architectural practice. Highlighting the constraints imposed by Patrik Schumacher’s Parametricist manifesto, this research underscores the transformative potential of transitional phases advocating for opening the Parametricist discourse to allow for creative exploration and progress in light of pressing contemporary issues.Show less

De pronkpoppenhuizen van Petronella De la Court (1624-1707), Petronella Dunois (1650-1695), Petronella Oortman (1656-1716) en Sara Ploos van Amstel Rothé (1699-1751) kunnen geteld worden tot de topstukken van de Nederlandse museumcollecties door hun goed bewaarde staat en rijkelijke aankleding. Deze bijzondere stukken worden elke dag bewonderd door vele museumbezoekers en geven een belangrijke inkijk in het dagelijks leven van de welgestelde burgerij in de zeventien en achttiende-eeuwse Republiek. In deze scriptie is - aan de hand van de informatie die de poppenhuizen verschaffen over het dagelijks leven van de gegoede burgerij in de Republiek - onderzocht op welke manier het Hollandse pronkpoppenhuis functioneerde binnen het leven van de vrouw in deze kringen.Show less

Due to his marriage to the Catharina Bolnes, a Catholic woman of high society, Vermeer converted to the Catholic faith. Vermeer started as a history painter. Among his first known works are large paintings with religious (Catholic) subject matter. Later, he mainly painted small genre pieces. One of his last works, however, is Allegory of the Catholic Faith, an enormous painting. In this thesis it is argued that the change in painted subject matter is a result of Vermeers conversion to Catholicism. His religious paintings are most probably commissioned. Since the Protestant faith was the State religion in the 17th century Netherlands and the Catholic faith was officially prohibited, the market for paintings with Catholic subject matter was very limited: eligible clients were either hidden churches, or rich Catholic civilians. Economic motives - Vermeer had a large family to maintain - may have urged him to tap into a new market. Genre paintings were popular at the time. The small format of Vermeer's genre paintings involved less costs. Unknown is whether these genre paintings were commissioned. It is assumed that his genre paintings were sold immediately after, of even before, they were finished. Half of Vermeer's paintings were bought by his patrons, the Protestant couple Van Ruijven-De Knuijt from Delft. No relation is apparent between Vermeer's shift to (mainly) genre painting and his stilistic development. Vermeer's fame is mainly due to his non-religious later work, especially his genre pieces.Show less

Deze...Show moreDe ontwerper, het doel, de betekenis en de eigenaar van historische sieraden zijn moeilijk te achterhalen. In dit onderzoek worden drie verschillende zestiende-eeuwse zeemonsters bestudeerd. Deze hangers worden met de ornamentprenten van de zestiende-eeuwse Antwerpse Hans I Collaert (1525/30-1580) geassocieerd. Eén van de drie hangers vertoont grote gelijkenis met een ontwerp van Hans I Collaert, maar bij de andere twee zijn veel verschillen op te merken. Verschillende studies hebben al aangetoond dat ontwerpers als de familie Collaert hun ontwerpen veelal baseerden op bredere culturele en maatschappelijke interesses, waaronder zeemonsters. De ontwerpen van deze drie sieraden kunnen ook gezien worden als onderdeel van een regionale noordelijke ornamentstijl en een bredere culturele interesse in zeemonsters, met een rijk zeemonstermotief, gekenmerkt door een beeldentaal van woeste zeemonsters.Show less

More specifically, Turato’s publication pool 5 (2022) will be used as a case study to answer the research question: ‘To what extent does Nora Turato’s artists’ book pool 5 integrate text and visual design to create a distinct form of expression within the realm of text-based arts?’. By analyzing Turato’s use of the medium of the artists’ book, situated in text-based arts, this thesis aims to explore the supposed connection between the arts and semiotics, while also situating the work of Turato in a broader contextual sphere. Using the perspectives of visual analysis and semiotics, this thesis aims to extend the understanding of the relationship between authorship, language, and meaning within text-based contemporary art.Show less
