Eliot. Alcestis' motivation to sacrifice herself and her reaction on returning to her husband turned out to be blank spots in Euripides' tragedy. The three modern writers gave their main characters three drastically different reasons and reactions. This could partly be explained by their relation to the Second World War.Show less

Show less

The first represents the political power of any given land or country, while the latter serves as an entry point into the marvelous world of the religious organization of any given culture. Though studying these separate institutions on their own is of great importance, it is even more in teresting to study the area in which the interests of both institutions meet. Such studies can show how both parties have to deal with each other's interest and have to adapt their own to guarantee a fruitful cooperation. This thesis consists of such a study, researching the relationship between the Babylonian palace and temple in the context of the daily offerings while focusing on the specific role of the king and his priests. With this study I hope to fill in the blanks that are present in this field of study, since this relation has been examined, but not in the context with which this thesis is concerned.Show less

Because of for example the occurrence of hyperbaton in these parts of the sentence, this variation seems meaningful and can possibly be described in the same terms as the variation in clauses. Therefore, in this thesis, it is proposed to apply the model not only to clauses but also to smaller segments of the text. Just like any other spoken language, the language of the messenger stories in Euripides can be segmented into Intonation Units (IU's). IU's are separated from one another by a pause or other prosodic feature such as pitch. Because of the lack of recorded data, IU-segmentation of ancient texts is in this thesis done by making use of the meter and of the syntactical segmentation criteria suggested by Scheppers (2011).Show less

In his Romae Laudes, translated into Latin by Vincenzo Ussani, Mussolini depicts ancient Rome from a fascist perspective. In this Latin text, allusions are made to Latin texts from antiquity, both at text level and at theme level. Thus, Mussolini makes a connection between the imperial and the contemporary Rome, and he consciously uses ancient Rome in order to propagate fascist ideology.Show less

Egyptians, Persian, Greeks, Arameans and many others lived together, but each had its own legal system. Having so many cultures living alongside each other must have brought legal problems and situations with it. So how can you solve this legal puzzle with so many systems next to each other? This thesis highlights one small aspect, namely adoption in the Aramaic papyri from Elephantine. The Jews, originally from the northern Levant, used Official Aramaic, a language closely related to the Akkadian language, yet they lived in an Egyptian society. The question here is: how does the procedure of adoption develops itself in this multicultural society? The three major texts regarding adoption – the Adoption Document, the Testamentary Manumission and the Story of Aḥiqar – will be researched in comparison to their Egyptian and Near Eastern counterparts. The lack of Egyptian sources is a curse to this research, since it makes diachronic study impossible. In the first chapter the content of the three documents is revised, and compared to the content of sources. In the second chapter the lexical part is examined. Specific clauses regarding adoption are illustrated and further evaluated by comparing them with Ancient Near Eastern and Egyptian sources. The overall conclusion is that Near Eastern influences are more prominent, but some Egyptian influences seeps in on a low level.Show less

Show less

In order to do so, the methodological approach must be multidisciplinary. Quantitative analysis will be applied in order to understand the architectural development of the tombs. The prosopographic analysis will contribute to the identification of social relations and influences within the necropolis. Lastly, the landscape archaeology perspective will help us to understand the necropolis as an holistic element within ancient Egyptian beliefs. Understanding the necropolis as a whole, where all tombs shaped a large complex that ended up working as a sacred space, is necessary in order to give a semiotic meaning to landscape; a perspective not deeply studied yet. The symbolic complexity of Ancient Egyptians has been widely studied through its iconography or through its artistic elements but we have forgotten their own environment. Landscape is foremost a symbolic construction, a reference system where the different activities of a community acquire sense. Landscape is not a pre-existing reality, but a social and historically shaped one. This multidisciplinary approach will contribute to the understanding of the whole necropolis and also the role that Sheik Abd el-Qurna played in its development. Linking together the great material record of the funerary area with the symbolic thinking of Ancient Egyptian will create a wider insight into the Theban necropolis.Show less
