Part of the community are making an effort to revive the Yaaku language, of which only few semi-speakers are left. Study material was needed in order for them to learn their language again. This thesis provides a pedagogic grammar of Yaaku, based on Heine's (1975) "Notes on the Yaaku language". Several linguistic as well as practical issues are discussed with regard to the possibility of revitalizing the language.Show less

This grammar sketch aims to...Show moreThe Dialect of Vlasotince is a Torlak variety of South Slavic spoken in and around the small town of Vlasotince in southern Serbia, between Kosovo (KiM) and Bulgaria. This grammar sketch aims to provide a succinct description of its phonology, morphology and select syntactic features as currently used by the inhabitants of Vlasotince, supplemented with a small number of texts to illustrate its use in practice. Due to Vlasotince’s considerable growth since the end of WWII (Vukmirović 2013: 106) and the proliferation of media and schooling in the standard language, what is most commonly heard on the street nowadays is a variety with stronger influence from the standard language than is usually found in the works on Torlak dialectology from the past century, yet one that clearly retains much of its distinctive character. It is this contemporary, commonly used register, sprinkled with influences from the standard, that I have tried to describe here. It should serve as a representative snapshot of the way people from Vlasotince speak amongst themselves today.Show less

It reacts on an earlier...Show moreThis study aimed to investigate how Dutch natives with a different exposure to English as a second language process Dutch sentences with a preposition stranding structure. It reacts on an earlier study by Koopman (2010), who reported that P-stranding is only grammatical with r-pronouns and not with non-r DPs. Preposition stranding with non-r DPs is grammatical in English, and English is becoming more and more present as a second language in the Netherlands. Therefore, the present study tested whether preposition stranding in Dutch could be undergoing a shift towards the English structure, and whether we could see this reflected in the processing strategies of on the one hand, a group of students with a high exposure to English and on the other hand, a group of student with a low exposure to English. Two groups of students were tested in a word-by-word self-paced reading task, and the results showed a clear difference between the two groups. Even if at first the obtained results seemed contradictory with the hypothesized results, as the high proficient group showed a bigger slowdown after the stranded P than the low proficient group, after critical reflection on the stimuli and the data, evidence was found that the high proficient group uses an English processing mode while reading Dutch sentences with a seemingly English structure.Show less

The thesis focuses on the differences and similarities of evidential strategies in a sample of languages spoken throughout the area while trying to refrain from using a rigid framework in which to place the strategies. This leads to a broad, adjusted definition of evidentiality that allows evidentiality to be seen as a more general strategy for expressing a speaker’s access to certain information, rather than only the grammatical encoding of this. The thesis studies languages from both the Austronesian and Papuan language families and compares each language’s strategy both individually and in context of linguistic and geographical proximity. As this is a typological overview, it is the goal to give an impression of the situation that is as objective as possible. Therefore, generalizations were minimalized and conclusions given or tendencies highlighted only based on the data within this study. Hopefully, this thesis shows that rigid (typological) demarcations of features is not always helpful but can often hamper a deeper understanding and skew typological overviews.Show less

Choi, Goller, Hong, Ansorge and Yun (2018) found a difference between German and Korean speakers with regard to how they encode different aspects of figure-ground relationships in their speech. This study aims to build on the findings of Choi et al. (2018) and make a small contribution to the question how figure-ground relationships are encoded in speakers’ minds in different languages. To investigate this, 54 target videos were created, divided over 9 different categories that all depicted a different motion type. Two versions of each video were created, one depicting a canonical direction of motion and the other a reverse direction. In the first part of the experiment, the description task, two groups of participants were given a different task. The motion description group (18 participants, L1 Dutch, 16 participants L2 English, 2 participants L2 French, Bulgarian and/or Japanese) was asked to describe the motions they saw in a video, the object description group (24 participants, L1 Dutch, L2 English, 10 participants L2 French, German, Italian and/or Swedish) got the task to describe the objects. Participants filled out a language background questionnaire during part two, the intermission, and in part three, the recall task, participants from both groups had to judge whether they had seen a video during the first part or not. For each category in the recall task there were 2 true videos (videos participants had seen before in the description task) and 4 deviant videos (videos they had not seen before in the description task). A repeated measures ANOVA was conducted for which proportion correct, category type, exposure status (true or deviant), canonicity (canonical or reverse) and participant group (motion or object description) were entered as variables. The results showed that while there was no difference between the groups, there were differences between the put over/under category and the hook category, the put on loose support and the put through category, the put on tight attachment and put through, and the put through and hook category, and whether the videos were true or deviant. I conclude that these factors influence the amount of correct judgments the participants make and discuss what the implications for these conclusions might be in the context of the influence of language on cognition.Show less

Er is onderzoek gedaan naar wat de invloed is van verschillende klinkers en het al dan niet leggen van focus op een woord op de perceptie van deze informatie. Participanten werd gevraagd om telkens te luisteren naar opeenvolgende geluidsfragmenten van stemmen en daarna te beslissen of deze geluidsfragmenten twee verschillende of twee dezelfde stemmen bevatten. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat de klinker /a/ meer sprekerspecifieke informatie bevat voor de luisteraar dan de /u/. Hoe de factor focus zich gedraagt, verschilt per antwoord dat participanten hadden moeten geven; bij de correcte keuzes voor zelfde-spreker is het effect dat focus heeft op de perceptie van sprekerspecifieke informatie duidelijker zichtbaar dan bij de correcte keuzes voor verschillende-spreker.Show less

That is, Australianists have not always agreed about which cases and core cases occur in which language groupings and what the alignment looks like in each language. On the basis of a representative sample of 12 Australian languages, I give an overview of the core cases and the alignment of these languages. The initial outcome shows a mixture of features, like a widespread ergative case and multiple forms of split ergativity, which not necessarily define the difference between the Pama-Nyungan and the non-Pama-Nyungan language family. As Pama-Nyungan and non-Pama-Nyungan are valid terms, one can, strictly speaking, still make the distinction between these two language families, yet not convincingly on the basis of case.Show less

Over time, serial verbs tend to grammaticalize and when they do, they do so according to certain tendencies. This thesis aims to contribute to the research on serial verbs and grammaticalization by providing an analysis of serial verbs and their degrees of grammaticalization in the Ecuadorian Siona language, a severely endangered language from the Western Tukanoan family. The results of this research include a classification of Siona serial verbs according to the parameters as proposed by Aikhenvald (2006; 2018) as well as a list of frequently serialized stems and their degrees of grammaticalization according to parameters based on the four mechanisms of grammaticalization as proposed by Heine and Kuteva (2002). Where possible, an analysis is provided of the grammatical functions of the serialized verbs.Show less

In het Nederlands noemen we dit tussenwerpsels. Deze woorden geven echter een heleboel informatie over de staat van de spreker weer: iemand is blij, vindt iets vies of is geschokt of verbaasd. Deze drie voorbeelden zijn interjecties, uitingen die de emotie van de spreker weergeven. Interjecties komen veelvuldig voor in de spreektaal van alle talen, en dus ook in het Quechua. Het Quechua is een zelfstandige taalfamilie die vanouds wordt gesproken door de oorspronkelijke bewoners in de Andes in de landen Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chili en Argentinië. Het Quechua is een taalfamilie, maar verdeeld over verschillende vertakkingen die weer eigen talen kennen. Tussen verschillende talen zijn er verschillen en overeenkomsten te vinden in interjecties, zowel in betekenis als in vorm. Het doel van deze studie is om vast te stellen hoe interjecties tot uiting komen in de talen van het Quechua. Hierbij stel ik mijzelf de vragen wat een definitie van een interjectie is, of interjecties gekenmerkt worden door een specifieke structuur, wat de functies zijn van interjecties, en of er een verband is tussen de functie en de structuur van interjecties.Show less

Many of such words can be explained as loanwords of a Pre-Greek substrate or as Semitic loanwords. However, some Greek words seem to originate from a Semitic language, but the morphology and phonology point towards a Pre-Greek origin. To solve this apparent discrepancy, the possibility that Semitic loanwords entered the Greek lexicon via Pre-Greek is examined in this thesis. A sample of fourteen obscure Greek words confirms this hypothesis. The words share semantical and phonological features with equivalent words in Semitic languages, but share phonological and morphological features with Pre-Greek as well. Especially the occurrence of Pre-Greek suffixes that are not present in the Semitic equivalents are strong arguments in favor of this hypothesis. Besides examples of Semitic influence on Pre-Greek, this thesis provides two possible examples of Pre-Greek loanwords in Semitic languages. These findings develop our knowledge of language contact in the Mediterranean region during the Bronze and Iron Age.Show less

The attributive possessive constructions consists of the associative and/or the possessive pronouns. The associative forms are made by the associative stem -a and the pronominal prefixes. Possessive pronouns consists of a prefix which agrees with the possessed noun and a stem which refers to the possessor. I divided the possessive pronouns into two groups: the personal possessive pronouns and the nonpersonal possessive pronouns. I made this division because in many Bantu languages the paradigms of possessive pronouns is reduced to only the personal possessive pronouns. The predicative possessive construction consist of the possessor noun, the copula verb, the word na ‘with’, and the possessed noun. The most remarkable and uncommon feature of the possessive constructions in Kiroba is that Kiroba has the whole paradigm of possessive pronouns: the personal and nonpersonal possessive pronouns.Show less

Deze...Show moreHet Helmonds is een taal (ook wel dialect genoemd) gesproken in de stad Helmond, gelegen in het oosten van de provincie Noord-Brabant. Het behoort tot de Peellandse tak van het Oost-Brabants. Deze scriptie beschrijft zijn fonologie, morfologie en morfofonologie. In deze domeinen verschilt het Helmonds het sterkst van het Standaardnederlands (SN). Zo heeft de taal veertien monoftongen, één meer dan de dertien die Booij (1995: 5) voor het SN beschrijft. Dit is ook typologisch opvallend. Maddiesons (2013) sample van 564 talen bevat bijvoorbeeld maar één taal met veertien klinkers. Daarmee is het Helmonds een zeldzaamheid onder de talen van de wereld. Naast de grotere klinkerinventaris verschilt het Helmonds van het SN op het gebied van flexie. Het heeft affixen die niet voorkomen in het SN. Ook wordt modificatie van de wortel van een woord veelvuldig gebruikt om bepaalde morfologische functies uit te drukken. Verder heeft de toevoeging van morfologie vaak invloed op de realisatie van de wortel, waardoor de fonetische realisatie van de taal vaak afwijkt van haar onderliggende structuur. De morfofonologie is daarmee erg complex. Ondanks deze complexiteit is deze scriptie toch een erg volledige beschrijving van de eerdergenoemde domeinen. De data waar deze beschrijving zich op baseert is door de auteur zelf verzameld in Helmond. Hierbij heeft hij rekening gehouden met sociolinguïstische factoren als gender en plaats van geboorte binnen Helmond. Uit dit onderzoek is daarmee ook gebleken dat er twee variëteiten in Helmond gesproken worden, hier Perifeer Helmonds (PH) en Centraal Helmonds (CH) genoemd. Deze variëteiten zijn te verbinden met de plaats van geboorte van de spreker. Deze beschrijving is de eerste volledige beschrijving van de fonologie, morfologie en morfofonologie van het Helmonds. Het is daarmee een onmisbare bron voor eenieder die geïnteresseerd is in het Helmonds, maar ook in Noord-Brabantse dialectologie in het algemeen. Verder is de sectie over fonologie ook interessant voor het vakgebied van de taaltypologie.Show less

In dit fictieve artikel geven meerdere politici hun mening over het verschijnsel ‘hyperboolloze dinsdag’, waarmee de Tweede Kamer volgens De Speld zou gaan experimenteren, vaak op zeer hyperbolische wijze. PVV en DENK echter hanteren in hun gezamenlijke fictieve uitspraak een zeer gematigde stijl, zonder gebruik van hyperbool. Gezien de ironische toon van het nieuwsbericht impliceert de Speld dat er bij de PVV en DENK gewoonlijk juist wél veel sprake is van hyperbolisch taalgebruik. Het is interessant om naar aanleiding van dit artikel uit te zoeken in hoeverre dit daadwerkelijk het geval is. Uit eerder onderzoek (oa Verhagen, 2002; van Leeuwen 2015) blijkt dat de mate waarin een uiting hyperbolisch overkomt grotendeels afhangt van de taalintensiteit van die uiting; intensiveerders zijn taalmiddelen die die intensiteit verhogen. De onderzoeksvraag luidt dan ook: In hoeverre verschilt het gebruik van intensiveerders van Geert Wilders en Tunahan Kuzu van dat van Sybrand Buma en Kees van der Staaij? Kees van der Staaij is bij het onderzoek betrokken omdat hij bekend staat als vrij genuanceerde spreker, en dus goed als maatstaf gebruikt kan worden in deze vergelijking. Dit onderzoek heeft als doel om na te gaan of er wetenschappelijke evidentie gegeven kan worden voor datgene wat de Speld in het bewuste artikel suggereert. Ook is het interessant om het gebruik van intensiveerders van vier Nederlandse politici te onderzoeken, omdat er al veel onderzoek gedaan is naar taalintensiteit - zie Liebrecht (2015, p250-263) voor een overzicht - maar vrij weinig naar intensivering bij Nederlandse politici. Om de onderzoeksvraag te beantwoorden analyseer ik de voorbereide bijdragen van de sprekers aan de Algemene Politieke Beschouwingen van 2018. Dit heb ik gedaan aan de hand van het analysemodel van Liebrecht (2015) en het Taalintensiteits Model (TIM) van van Mulken en Schellens (2012), modellen respectievelijk voor het identificeren en categoriseren van intensiveerders. Vervolgens heb ik gekeken naar verschillen in frequentie en naar verschillen in gebruik per categorie. Mijn hypothese is dat Kuzu en Wilders meer intensiveerders gebruiken dan van der Staaij en Wilders; deze hypothese is op basis van de resultaten deels aangenomen.Show less

It provides a systematic overview of the different types of simple prepositions...Show moreThis thesis investigates prepositions in Melanesian Pidgin, consisting of the varieties Tok Pisin, Bislama and Pijin. It provides a systematic overview of the different types of simple prepositions, as well as a discussion of some complex prepositions. Full Bible translations of all three varieties have been used as a corpus. It is argued that the category of simple prepositions consists of basic prepositions and verbal prepositions. The latter category is divided into prepositions with verbal charachteristics and bifunctional forms. In taking all three varieties into account, existing theories are either affirmed or debated, the latter especially counting for the prepositional use of bifunctional forms in relation to serial verb constructions. A continuum on which the simple prepositions appear is proposed. Complex prepositions are shown to occur in all three varieties, with variation in the occurrence of the locative preposition and word order in Pijin. Additionally, a quantitative comparison is made between the varieties to learn more about the preferred prepositional strategies, concluding that Bislama prefers complex prepositions over similar bifunctional forms, Pijin displays the opposite, and Tok Pisin may use different lexical items.Show less
