The central question to...Show moreThe main idea behind this thesis is to explore how exactly legitimacy has influenced Chile’s instability, and how this lack of legitimacy has led to protests and crises. The central question to this thesis is as follows: “What is the role of legitimacy in the social uprising in Chile in October 2019?”. The question is answered by analyzing relevant topics such as legitimacy, governability, the transformation of a military dictatorship to democracy, challenges of a democracy, the concertación and social movements. Resulting in the following conclusion: legitimacy played a big role in the social uprising in Chile. As was found for this thesis, Chile has faced many problems with neoliberalism, social movements, as well as with legitimacy. Legitimacy, therefore, is only one of the many factors leading up to the crisis in Chile. Chile will continue to draft a new constitution that will hopefully unite Chile once again.Show less

Al sinds het begin van de revolutie zendt het Cubaanse regime medici naar o.a. Chili, Nicaraqua, Guatemala, maar ook naar landen op het Afrikaanse continent; Algerije, Mozambique en Angola. Vanaf de jaren 90 werden steeds meer Cubaans medische missies gezonden naar westerse, kapitalistische staten. Castro zag de Cubaanse medici als zijn ‘leger van witte jassen’. Het Cubaans medisch internationalisme wordt beschouwd als medische diplomatie. De medische missies fungeren als soft power instrumenten. Op basis van de medische missies verkrijgt Cuba symbolisch kapitaal in de vorm van goodwill, prestige, aanzien en invloed. Het symbolisch kapitaal kan dienen als fundament voor het aantrekken van fysiek kapitaal. De Mais Médicos en Oil-For-Doctors programma’s tonen op welke wijze Cuba zijn internationale economische belangen veilig stelt. Ook verwerft Cuba met behulp van de medische diplomatie steun en zodoende invloed in internationale fora. Echter, bezijden de pragmatische argumenten is het van belang om de altruïstische, idealistische beweeggronden niet uit het oog te verliezen.Show less
Deze scriptie onderzoekt de manieren waarop organisaties en journalisten uit de civiele maatschappij de strijd aangaan tegen politieke corruptie in Mexico, en wat de reactie van de huidige...Show moreDeze scriptie onderzoekt de manieren waarop organisaties en journalisten uit de civiele maatschappij de strijd aangaan tegen politieke corruptie in Mexico, en wat de reactie van de huidige president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) op dit fenomeen is. Dit onderwerp zal in drie hoofdstukken behandeld worden. In hoofdstuk 1 ligt de focus op wat politieke corruptie precies inhoudt, wat overheden kunnen doen om hun transparantie te verhogen en welke rol de civiele maatschappij en internationale organisaties hierin spelen. In hoofdstuk 2 wordt aandacht besteed aan de geschiedenis van Mexico, met als focuspunt politieke corruptie. Er worden drie tijdsperiodes behandeld: de Mexicaanse revolutie (1910-1917) en de PRI-heerschappij (1929-2000) die hierop volgde, het neoliberalisme en privatisering in Mexico (1982-2006) en de war on drugs van president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012). Het laatste hoofdstuk gaat in op twee initiatieven uit de civiele maatschappij. Het eerste initiatief is van de organisatie Mexicanos Contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad. Er wordt geanalyseerd op welke manieren zij zich inzetten om politieke corruptie te bestrijden en welke successen zij behaald hebben. De tweede casus behandelt de journaliste Carmen Aristegui. Er wordt uiteengezet hoe zij al jarenlang de strijd aangaat tegen politieke corruptie, en met welke obstakels zij te maken heeft. Als laatste wordt besproken hoe de huidige president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) zich inzet om politieke corruptie te bestrijden, en wat hij vindt van organisaties en journalisten uit de civiele maatschappij die dit probleem ook proberen aan te pakken.Show less
