Given the nation's considerable role in environmental degradation alongside its prominent global position, internal divisions are a substantial barrier to environmental progress. Politically, the American right has become associated with anti- environmentalism; however, as this thesis helps to understand, this has not always been the case. Moreover, in recent years a new movement has arisen that aims to reunite Republicans with their environmental past. The conservative environmental movement is an intriguing development within the environmental debate. I examine the movement in light of environmental history and combine it with the field of gender research, as the significant contributions of women to the movement have oftentimes been neglected in scholarly works. In bringing these two phenomena together, this thesis addresses the research gap located in the intersection of these academic fields. I apply two different research methods, combining historical and social research, or content analysis. I investigate two current conservative environmental organizations, RepublicEn and the American Conservation Coalition, as well as the product of the institutionalization of the movement, namely the Conservative Climate Caucus. This study is led by the question, how have women contributed to the conservative environmental movement in the United States? The answer is multifold. Historically, women have played significant roles in the development of American environmentalism by using their womanhood and feminine qualities like cooperativeness and communication skills. My socio-political analyses of the present-day conservative environmental movement add nuance: I find gendered distinctions in the conservative environmental approach in the form of the paradigms of “leadership” and “cooperation”. Within the civic organizations of this study, a clear gender difference exists as the women under study are more likely to take a cooperative approach, in contrast to their leadership-oriented male counterparts. This distinction dissipates when women obtain more power, which is shown through the near absence of these distinct approaches within the party itself.Show less

The literature review gives an overview of topics and debates in both literary re-translation and media accessibility. Starting with a description of the source materials and the way parallel segments are identified, this thesis presents the two frameworks used to study intralingual retranslations for lower reading levels: 1) Chesterman's translation strategies and 2) Dutch plain language guidelines. It looks at the parallels between the two and goes on to show how the easy-reading ‘Taal voor Allemaal’ guidelines primarily aimed at making informative texts more accessible to low-literacy readers and non-native readers may also be used for literary retranslations (thesis p. 45: ‘By highlighting these parallels, I emphasize the relevance of applying plain language guidelines for literary retranslations, not only informational texts.’). The framework proposed is an idea that may contribute to more accessibility of literary works for those with cognitive and/or reading difficulties.Show less

To facilitate a dialogue between psychoanalysis and schizoanalysis, three specific films associated with Charlie Kaufman will be utilized: Synecdoche, New York, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. These works of Kaufman will serve as a ‘third philosophical voice’. The psychoanalytic and schizoanalytic methods will not only provide new insights into Kaufman’s work. By allowing the films to speak for themselves, they also shed light on the connection between psychoanalysis and schizoanalysis through the subjects that the films themselves explore.Show less

I will analyse the cases using the comparative method (Most Different Systems Design) and the congruence method. The analyses show that the most influential causes in winning the war were that the Dutch and US forces had a high level of interaction with the local population, decentralised their military and civil policy, and successfully balanced a strategy of winning an influential part of the population over with benefits while using punishments to sever the bonds between insurgents and their supporters. My findings will cast doubt on whether contemporary Western Democracies can and should engage in counterinsurgency warfare, seeing the high moral and human cost necessary to win the war.Show less

My goal was to create a foundational piece of work that uncovers the dynamics behind these transformations. However, it's important to note that this work includes the necessary analysis and critique to comprehend this transformation.Show less

Dominated by two ethnic groups, the French and British, Canada found it difficult to shed the prejudices of the past. While French Canadians began to seek an identity independent of France and Canada, British Canadians sought to maintain their historic ties to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. The most symbolic indication of this connected rested in Canada's flag, the Red Ensign. It served as a nostalgic reminder of an imperial-British past, as well as an overt sign of conquest and thus yielded passionate support, apathy, and disdain from across the maturing country. Whereas previous attempts to settle the "Flag Question" failed, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, through a career in British and United Nations circles alike, bore witness to the consequences that a divided people would have on its state. He respected the traditions of the past but viewed them as outdated and hindering the emergence of a Canadian national identity that was open from those of all ethnic backgrounds, languages, and location within Canada. A new flag, featuring a domestically grown symbol - the maple leaf, was deemed to be the most appropriate by politicians, scholars, and the public alike. The Maple Leaf flag would take over for the Red Ensign after a heated debate that questioned what it meant to be "Canadian".Show less

Show less
