Vrouwen worden geacht zich op een kuise manier te bedekken zodat zij niet opvallen voor het mannelijke geslacht. Veiling is een breed begrip met een andere betekenis in een andere situatie. Het beleid omtrent veiling verschilt per land en is niet altijd constant geweest. Door veranderingen binnen de nationale overheden van landen in het Midden Oosten bestaat er een rijke geschiedenis van het uiterlijk van de vrouw binnen de samenleving. Het doel van deze scriptie is het naast elkaar leggen van twee verschillende landen binnen het Midden Oosten en het bekijken van het beleid omtrent veiling op nationaal niveau. Iran is een land waar strenge kledingvoorschriften bestaan, vooral voor de vrouwen. De revolutie van 1979 heeft grote veranderingen gebracht in het straatbeeld van Iran. Tijdens de revolutie stonden gesluierde en ongesluierde vrouwen naast elkaar in het verzet tegen het regime. Mensen met verschillende achtergronden namen deel aan de revolutie en dit bracht hoop op een gelijke samenleving met zich mee (Sedghi 2007: 203). Kort na de val van het oude regime verdween deze hoop op gelijke rechten na de instelling van reveiling (her-sluieren). Ayatollah Khomeini verplichtte de Iraanse vrouw een hijab te dragen (Sedghi 2007: 201). In de periode na de revolutie werd er gestreefd naar een Islamitische identiteit. Het symbool van de staatsopbouw in Iran werd de vrouw, en vooral de verhulling van haar lichaam. Hiernaast werden gender segregatie en ongelijkheid integraal aan de staatsopbouw, waar niet iedereen het mee eens was (Sedghi 2007: 201). De situatie voorafgaand aan de revolutie was verdwenen en om dit vast te houden werd met harde hand controle gehouden. Na een periode van ‘unveiling’ (ontsluieren) werden Iraanse vrouwen geacht zich te houden aan het ‘reveiling’ (her-sluieren) beleid. Het land wat ik naast Iran wil gaan leggen is een westers georiënteerd land dat meegerekend wordt bij het Midden Oosten: Turkije. Het land is een parlementaire democratie en het heeft een seculiere staatsinrichting. In Turkije is secularisatie gericht op het scheiden van de openbare en religieuze sfeer (Barras 2009: 1240). Het is een nieuwe regeling die de staat aanneemt als onderdeel van het beleid waar zij controle uitoefenen op religie binnen de samenleving (Barras 2009: 1238). Turkije heeft de staat openlijk bestuurd aan de hand van de Islam door middel van zijn ‘State Directorate of Religious Affairs’ (‘Diyanet’) (Barras 2009: 1241). Dit houdt in dat er controle wordt gehouden op islamitische religieuze educatie en de aanstelling van religieuze ambtenaren; er is geen sprake van een duidelijke scheiding van de kerk en de staat. Turkije richt zich op het verwijderen van religieuze symbolen uit de publieke ruimtes. Het wil een samenleving creëren die geen religieuze symbolen bevat en dit leidt in 1981 tot een verbod op het dragen van een hoofddoek (Barras 2009: 1241). In de ogen van Turkije hoort het dragen van een hoofddoek niet bij het idee van secularisatie.Show less

Dit is het doen van onderzoek naar de kwaliteit van het debat dat de populistische partij van Geert Wilders voert.Het doel van deze scriptie is om te onderbouwen waarom de manier van debat voeren van de PVV niet goed is, en of die manier van debatteren eigenlijk wel echt niet goed is. Dit zal gebeuren aan de hand van een instrument genaamd: DQI (Discourse Quality Index). De onderzoeksvraag die bij deze scriptie centraal staat is: is de deliberatieve kwaliteit van Tweede Kamer debatten uit de kabinetsperiode Kok ll (waar de PVV nog niet aan meedeed) beter volgens de DQI van Steiner et al., dan Tweede Kamer debatten uit de periode Balkenende IV(waar de PVV wel meedeed)(2004)? En de tweede vraag die in deze scriptie wordt behandelt is: Is de deliberatieve kwaliteit van PVV Kamerleden slechter dan die van andere Kamerleden volgens de DQI van Steiner et al.(2004)?Show less

Goal of the EEAS: Creating a more coherent...Show moreIn 2010, the European External Action Service (EEAS) was launched. This service should serve as a 'ministry of foreign affairs' of the European Union. Goal of the EEAS: Creating a more coherent European foreign policy by providing a bridge between the member states and the European institutions, and between the European institutions themselves (Council and Commission). This thesis investigates whether the EEAS, in the short timespan that it is active now, has been able to achieve this goal. Three levels of coherence are identified: Horizontal coherence (coherence between the external policies of the different European institutions and organs), vertical coherence (coherence between the foreign policies of the different member states) and, finally, external coherence (the EU's ability to speak with a single voice to the rest of the world). Making use of a Principal-Agent theoretical framework, and relying on more than ten interviews with officials in Brussels, this contribution draws the conclusion that the EEAS has enhanced European foreign policy coherence, albeit moderately. As a result of the creation of a single High Representative/Vice-President of the Commission (HRVP), external coherence was fostered most convincingly. On the other hand, horizontal coherence - if not deteriorated - did not grow as a result of the EEAS. Hence, there is still much work to be done in the realm of inter-institutional relations in the EU.Show less

The present study was the first to investigate the association between mothers’ ability to reflect upon the relationship with her (unborn) infant during pregnancy and maternal and infant behavior...Show moreThe present study was the first to investigate the association between mothers’ ability to reflect upon the relationship with her (unborn) infant during pregnancy and maternal and infant behavior during the Still-Face Paradigm (SFP). The sample consisted of 52 mother-infant dyads, from both high (HR, N = 22)- and low (LR, N = 29) risk backgrounds, as defined by the presence/absence of unemployment, poverty or financial problems, housing problems, limited or instable social support network, being single or having changing partners, (subclinical) psychiatric problems (such as depression, anxiety, borderline, aggression), or substance abuse (smoking, alcohol, or drugs). High-risk (HR)-mothers had lower levels of reflective functioning than LR-mothers and showed less sensitive and more intrusive behavior in interaction with their infants. Infants from high risk backgrounds showed more negative affect during play and less gaze towards mother during the still-face episode of the SFP. Reflective functioning during pregnancy predicted maternal sensitive and intrusive behavior during play, but only for LR-mothers. In general, maternal reflective functioning predicted infant display of minimal positive affect during the still-face episode, an association that was not mediated by maternal behavior during the SFP. These results indicate that mothers’ reflective abilities predict later maternal sensitive and intrusive behavior, and even some infant behavior independently from maternal behavior. Future studies should further clarify the role of maternal reflective capacities in the development of children’s emotion regulation abilities, and its potential role in prenatal coaching and interventions.Show less

In...Show moreThis study investigated the effect of maternal depression on mother and infant behavior during the Still Face Paradigm (SFP). It was investigated whether the SFP elicited the still-face effect. In addition, the effect of maternal depression on infant’s emotion regulation and maternal behavior during the SFP was examined. Fifty-two mother-infant dyads participated in this study. Maternal depression was measured using a positive score on either the MINI-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI-Plus) or Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) during the first or second appointment. Additionally, the cognitive development of six-month old infants was measured using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-II). During a home-visit, the SFP was administered by trained PhD- or graduate students, and mother and infant behaviors were coded afterwards. Results indicated that the still face effect was found for negative affect, arching and/or squirming behavior, gaze toward mother, and additionally for maternal sensitivity and maternal positive affect. Infants of depressed mothers averted gaze during all episodes of the SFP compared to infants of non-depressed mothers. Combination of SFP episodes and maternal depression resulted in more arching and/or squirming behavior during the play and reunion episodes for infants of depressed mothers. Furthermore, mothers who feel depressed showed more internalizing or helpless behavior during the reunion. The findings of this study increase the knowledge of the effects of maternal depression on mother behavior and infant’s regulatory capacities during stress exposure.Show less

Psychological adaptation was examined in 993 Dutch internationally adopted adults (M= 38 years; 58% female) with a relatively high percentage of pre-adoption adversity, and the international...Show morePsychological adaptation was examined in 993 Dutch internationally adopted adults (M= 38 years; 58% female) with a relatively high percentage of pre-adoption adversity, and the international adoptees were compared with their Dutch non-adopted peers and with Dutch domestic adoptees. Psychological adaptation was indicated by internalizing and externalizing problem behavior, and self-esteem. We found that the majority of the international adoptees were well adapted and showed even higher levels of self-esteem than their non-adopted peers from the general population. After controlling for the effects of the pre-adoption adversity, we found that international adoptees who reported a more negative appraisal of relinquishment and adoption, showed more feelings of loss, more negative coping strategies, and less optimal psychological adaptation. Whilst comparing the international and domestic adoptees, we found that the international adoptees showed a more positive appraisal of both relinquishment and adoption than the domestic adoptees. Based on these findings, we suggest that both the appraisal of relinquishment and adoption and feelings of loss play a key role in the psychological adaption of adoptees. These insights should be used in the preparation of new adoptive parents and helping children to adapt to their new life environment and to prevent problems later in life. Furthermore, in treatment and psychological help, adult adoptees with problems might benefit from reflecting on the feelings of loss towards the biological parents and the feelings towards being relinquished and adopted.Show less

In Turkije staan ongelijke genderrollen en een patriarchale samenleving centraal als het gaat om eerwraak. In Nederland speelt de migratiecontext een rol in hoe eerwraak vandaag de dag in Nederland geduid wordt. Onder andere door deze context wordt eerwraak in het publieke debat geplaatst, namelijk of eerwraak een religieuze of culturele traditie is. Doordat de hele context van eerwraak geanalyseerd wordt (zowel in Turkije als in Nederland), kan eerwraak onder Turken in haar geheel begrepen worden.Show less

Er is in Egypte veel ongelijkheid tussen mannen en vrouwen. Door de Arabische Lente is de positie van de vrouw aangekaard. Ook vrouwen deden mee aan de protesten. Zij zetten zich niet alleen tegen de staat af maar ook tegen hun eigen huishouden. Zo willen zij gender in de dagelijkse praktijk, maar ook op staatsniveau veranderen. Op dagelijks niveau is de constructie van gender aangekaard en deels veranderd, maar op staatsniveau is dit nog niet behaald en het is maar de vraag of dit snel gaat lukken.Show less

Vervolgens ben ik ingegaan op de in de wetenschappelijke...Show moreIn deze scriptie is allereerst gekeken naar de sociaal historische context waaruit de Egyptische volksopstand van 2011 is ontstaan. Vervolgens ben ik ingegaan op de in de wetenschappelijke literatuur benoemde oorzaken waarom - juist nu - in het hedendaagse Egypte een opstand heeft kunnen plaatsvinden? Ik heb verduidelijkt dat de revolutie niet in een vacuüm plaatsvond, maar dat er jaren van protest aan vooraf gingen vanuit diverse segmenten van de Egyptische samenleving. Er zullen dus verschillende overlappende processen besproken worden die van belang waren rondom de totstandkoming van de revolutie. In het tweede gedeelte van de scriptie heb ik via inzichten vanuit het theoretisch kader van de scriptie duidelijk gemaakt dat de demonstranten het Tahrir-plein; een historisch geproduceerde ruimte die symbool stond voor militaire en politieke macht in Egypte, via revolutionaire en creatieve praktijken (revolutionaire kunst, liederen, leuzen, pamfletten, graffiti, toneel, muziek, etc.) hebben geclaimd en vervolgens getransformeerd, naar een betekenisvolle ruimte waar nieuwe politieke identiteiten gevormd konden worden tijdens de Egyptische revolutie van 2011. Verduidelijkt is via inzichten vanuit het theoretisch kader van Lefebvre (1991), dat demonstranten, via deze creatieve revolutionaire praktijken, het Tahrir-plein transformeerden van een ‘abstracte ruimte’; die decennia lang gedomineerd werd door de censuur, angst en repressiebeleid van onderdrukkende militaire regimes; tot een ‘representatieve ruimte’; die een duurzame massale conversatie mogelijk maakte en een indrukwekkende verandering van agency bewerkstelligde.Show less
