Als niemand een...Show moreAbstract Het vrijwilligersdilemma, geïntroduceerd door Diekmann, houdt in dat één persoon een offer moet brengen zodat anderen in de groep hier vervolgens een voordeel uit halen. Als niemand een offer brengt, is iedereen in de groep slechter af. Dit sociale dilemma kan beïnvloed worden door verschillende factoren. In dit experiment is er onderzoek gedaan naar de invloed van (on)gelijkheid in interesses en voorkeuren van individuen op het vaker samenwerken van groepen participanten in het vrijwilligersdilemma. Voor dit onderzoek zijn 60 participanten boven de 18 jaar uitgenodigd om naar een onderzoekslab van de Universiteit Leiden te komen. Voor het design is er gebruik gemaakt van twee tussen-proefpersonen condities met 30 participanten per experimentele conditie, met allereerst een baseline meting. Achter een computer kreeg iedere participant 20 vragen over de onderwerpen muziek, sport, eten en kleuren en vervolgens werden hen verschillende vragen gesteld om de mate van gevoel van gelijkheid met de groep te meten. Gebleken is dat (on)gelijkheid in interesses en voorkeuren geen significant effect heeft op het aantal vrijwilligers in het vrijwilligersdilemma en zo ook op samenwerking. Het doel van dit onderzoek was het verwerven van nieuwe informatie over de invloed van gelijkenissen tussen mensen op hun samenwerking in een sociaal dilemma. Dit zou nieuwe perspectieven van samenwerking kunnen geven, een fenomeen wat dagelijks voorkomt in verschillende contexten en sectoren.Show less

Analyses of Variances and Multiple Regression Analyses were conducted to investigate the effects. The findings indicate no significant correlation between language switching by the client and therapeutic alliance, but language switching by the therapist was associated with lower scores on the Patient Working Capacity (PWC) subscale. Discussing language switching was also negatively associated with the PWC and the Therapists' Understanding and Involvement (TUI) subscales. Language switching due to language barriers (dominant to non-dominant) and to distance oneself (non-dominant to dominant) were associated with lower alliance scores. Excluding Dutch-dominant psychotherapy clients, only the associated negative contribution of language switching to distance oneself remained significant. The findings highlight the complexity and universality of language switching and the importance of linguistic awareness among practitioners, particularly regarding the challenges of language barriers and their adverse effect on therapeutic alliance. Aiming to contribute to the evolving field of bilingual and multicultural psychotherapy, this study’s findings and limitations inspire future research on a linguistic technique yet not fully understood.Show less

Cognitieve flexibiliteit wordt verondersteld een rol te spelen in het beïnvloeden van deze situatie. In deze studie is onderzocht wat de relatie tussen angst en cognitieve empathie is. Daarnaast is er onderzocht wat de invloed van cognitieve flexibiliteit op deze relatie bij Syrische vluchtelingenkinderen is. Dit cross-sectioneel onderzoeksdesign bevatte een totaal van 33 Syrische vluchtelingenkinderen waarbij voor het meten van de mate van angst en cognitieve empathie twee zelfrapportagevragenlijsten zijn afgenomen. De Screening voor Angstgerelateerde Emotionele Stoornissen (SCARED) werd gebruikt voor het meten van de mate van angst en de Interpersoonlijke Reactiviteitsindex (IRI) voor het meten van cognitieve empathie. Tot slot is voor het meten van de mate van cognitieve flexibiliteit de cue context reversal taak gebruikt. Om de relatie tussen angst en cognitieve empathie te testen is een bivariate correlatieanalyse uitgevoerd. Daarnaast is voor de rol van cognitieve flexibiliteit op de relatie tussen angst en cognitieve empathie een partiele correlatieanalyse uitgevoerd. Er is geen significante relatie gevonden tussen angst en cognitieve empathie ( p = ,21). Daarnaast is er geen significante invloed gevonden van cognitieve flexibiliteit op de relatie tussen angst en cognitieve empathie ( p = ,10). Bij controle voor cognitieve flexibiliteit werd de relatie tussen angst en cognitieve empathie wel sterker. Gebaseerd op deze bevindingen, zijn er aanbevelingen gedaan voor vervolgonderzoek; een grotere onderzoeksgroep om een betere statistische kracht te creëren, de leeftijd van de populatiegroep die is genomen verhogen zodat cognitieve flexibiliteit volledig is ontwikkeld. Deze bevindingen geven clinici een beter begrip van de invloed van cognitieve flexibiliteit op angst en cognitieve empathie; welke aspecten op moeten worden gelet tijdens het selecteren van een populatiegroep en de grootte ervan.Show less

Endometriosis is a debilitating gynecological disorder, oftentimes accompanied by chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and mental health conditions such as depression. Previous research has established that CPP, which is unrelated to the occurrence of menstruation, is highly predictive of depression scores in females with endometriosis. In the context of patients with chronic illnesses, pain acceptance has been highlighted as playing a crucial role in psychological outcomes such as depression. Pain acceptance is determined by the extent to which a life-focus, or a pain-focus is maintained. The main objective of the study was to determine the interplay between CPP, pain acceptance and depression in participants diagnosed with endometriosis. Methods. The study had a retrospective, cross-sectional research design, using convenience sampling to recruit respondents. A final 232 respondents completed the survey, composed of an ad-hoc item to measure CPP (Numeric Rating Scale, NRS) and validated questionnaires to examine pain acceptance (Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire – 8, CPAQ-8) and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire – 9, PHQ-9). A correlation between CPP and depression was conducted, and the mediatory effect of pain acceptance in this relationship was investigated. Results. Initially, a significant and positive, however weak correlation between CPP and depression was found. Subsequently, pain acceptance was determined as a significant mediator in the relationship between CPP and depression. Discussion. In comparison with previous research in the general population, the PHQ-9 scores were higher and CPAQ-8 scores were lower in this study, indicating more severe depression, and lower pain acceptance scores. The mediation model established that experiencing CPP negatively impacts pain acceptance, which negatively impacts depression in females with endometriosis. Further research on mental health vulnerabilities in females with endometriosis, and an increase in social awareness and professional support is required.Show less

This question has fascinated scholars from the fields of cognitive psychology, linguistics and philosophy for ages. In order to make sense of our surroundings, we have to analyse objects that appear into our visual field. This happens during visual perception, a process underlied by a mechanism of separation and binding of object features, according to FIT (Treisman & Gelade, 1980). When creating meaning with language, a similar process takes place. During linguistic combinatorial processes, words are analysed and bound together into grammatical structures. In this study, the link between the two cognitive systems is assessed. We compare visual memory and combinatorial language abilities of children and adults by using a memory game with stimuli with and without overlapping features (colour and shape). To assess grammatical abilities, a grammar test was designed to assess combinatorial language abilities. It was hypothesised that they outperform adults in tasks concerning visual memory and that their visual memory correlated negatively with their grammatical skills. More specifically, we presumed that children would suffer less distraction from overlapping features because of their tendency to analyse the field holistically, without interference of grammatical ‘cognition’. We find that adults outperform children on the grammar test. Furthermore, we found that adults outperform children on the overall memory game. We also found that participants perform better during non-combinatorial trials than during combinatorial trials, in line with the hypothesis of holistic perception in children. However, we found no evidence of an effect of combinatorial language skills on visual memory.Show less

Earlier research has shown that emotional stimuli are better remembered than neutral stimuli due to an increase in attention and consolidation of emotional stimuli. Furthermore, mood has shown to have a significant influence on attention and memory when focusing on clinical outliers such as depression and anxiety, or induced mood. However, it is still unclear whether selfreported mood of healthy participants influences the emotional enhancement effect. In the current study the participants (n = 54) completed a memory task across two days. The participants completed the PANAS-SF questionnaire on the first day to assess their current mood. On the first day 60 negative and 60 neutral pictures were shown. On the second day the participants saw 75 pictures (negative and neutral), 60 of which they had seen the day before and 15 new pictures. We asked them for each picture to indicate how confident they were whether they had seen it the day before or if it was new. As we expected, we found an increased memory accuracy for negative pictures compared to neutral pictures. Moreover, we found less false alarms for negative pictures compared to neutral pictures and more hits for negative pictures. There was no significant effect found for mood influencing memory. Suggestions for future research are provided in the discussion.Show less

Echter, is dit effect nog niet bevonden bij een oudere leeftijdsgroep. Eén van de voorgestelde paden die het bevorderende effect kan verklaren, is via de neurotransmitter dopamine. Aangezien het dopaminestelsel achteruitgaat met de jaren, is het belangrijk het effect van leeftijd mee te nemen bij onderzoek naar de bevorderende werking van nieuwigheid op geheugen. Dit onderzoek toetst het effect van nieuwigheid op geheugen in een gelijksoortige setting als Schomaker en collega’s (2022). In huidig onderzoek worden vier onderdelen onderzocht: (1) een bevorderend effect van nieuwigheid op geheugen, (2) een bevorderend effect van nieuwigheid op knipperfrequentie, gebruikt als mogelijke indicatie van dopamine, (3) een effect van knipperfrequentie op geheugen en (4) een mogelijke mediatie van knipperfrequentie op het effect van nieuwigheid op het geheugen. De resultaten van dit onderzoek toonden geen bevorderend effect aan van nieuwigheid op geheugentaken. Daarnaast had nieuwigheid geen verhogend effect op knipperfrequentie. Vervolgens waren er geen significante relaties tussen verschillende momenten van de metingen van knipperfrequentie en prestaties op de geheugentaken. Ten slotte was er te weinig grond om een mogelijke mediatie aan te tonen. In toekomstig onderzoek zou een grotere steekproef en een betere indicatie van dopamine wellicht een ander beeld vormen. Een beter begrip van deze relaties kan helpen in het verklaren waarom sommige leerinterventies die berust zijn op het effect van nieuwigheid op geheugen niet werken bij oudere individuen of individuen met een alternatief werkend dopaminesysteem.Show less

Daarom wordt in deze studie ook gekeken naar het effect van onverwachtheid op woordgeheugen. Ook is voorheen in nieuwigheidsonderzoek vooral gekeken naar jongvolwassenen terwijl het effect van nieuwigheid op woordgeheugen voor kinderen en ouderen zwakker is. Daarom wordt in deze studie gekeken naar oudere volwassenen. In de huidige studie hebben oudere volwassenen (n = 14) op drie achtereenvolgende dagen een virtuele omgeving (VO) verkend met ofwel veel onverwachtheid door toevoeging van mist ofwel weinig onverwachtheid door toevoeging van een minimap en verder zicht. De eerste dag was bedoeld voor familiarisatie van de VO. Op dag 2 en 3 was de omgeving voor elke participant wisselend nieuw- of bekend ten opzichte van de eerste dag. Na het verkennen van de VO werd er een ongerelateerde woordleertaak afgenomen. Resultaten lieten zien dat veel onverwachtheid het woordgeheugen verbeterde ten opzichte van weinig onverwachtheid. Verder vergrootte een bekende omgeving de afgelegde afstand vergeleken met een nieuwe omgeving. Ook was er een negatieve correlatie tussen afgelegde afstand en woordgeheugen. Tot slot was er een trainingseffect van de testdag op de afgelegde afstand. Deze resultaten suggereren dat onverwachtheid in een VO invloed heeft op het woordgeheugen. De voorheen aangetoonde effecten van nieuwigheid op het woordgeheugen zijn wellicht dus deels te verklaren door de invloed van onverwachtheid. Dit impliceert dat interventies tegen geheugenverslechtering naast het nieuwigheidseffect dus ook gebruik kunnen maken van een verrassingseffect.Show less

It was hypothesized that high financial scarcity and high self-control both increase risk aversion and that self-control moderates the effect of financial scarcity on risk aversion. Additionally, we hypothesized that there is an association between self-control and financial scarcity. Financial scarcity, self-control and risk aversion were measured through an online questionnaire and regression analysis was performed through SPSS to test the hypotheses. Results showed a relationship between financial scarcity and risk aversion but no relationship between self-control and risk aversion. Subscale Control however, did correlate with risk aversion. Self-control was not a significant moderator between financial scarcity and risk aversion. Self-control did predict financial scarcity. To conclude, impulse control seems to be important in lottery task-related economic decisions and future research should look into if other subscales of conscientiousness are related to economic preferences.Show less

Deze effecten van nieuwigheid op geheugen zijn echter nog niet eerder onderzocht bij oudere volwassenen, waarbij individuele verschillen als motivatie (gemeten door Intrinsic Motivation Inventory) en spontaneous blinkrate (SBR) zijn meegenomen. In ons onderzoek verkenden participanten (n=14) een nieuwe of bekende virtuele omgeving, gevolgd door een onmiddellijke of vertraagde woordherinneringstaak of woordherkenningstaak. Uit de resultaten bleek dat het effect van nieuwigheid geen invloed had op de relatie tussen de geheugentaken, motivatie en SBR, en dat leeftijd mogelijk geen voorspellende factor was in deze relatie. Wanneer gecorrigeerd werd voor de variatie in dagen tussen de vertraagde geheugentaken per participant, vertoonde nieuwigheid wel een effect op verbeterde geheugenprestaties. In de analyses zonder leeftijd bleek dat het effect van geheugentaak en het effect van tijd van elkaar verschilden, wat zou kunnen suggereren dat de prestaties op de geheugentaken afnemen naarmate de tijd verstrijkt. Een belangrijke limitatie in het onderzoek was het beperkte aantal participanten en het minimale leeftijdsverschil. Hierdoor omvatte de variabele leeftijd mogelijk niet voldoende kracht om een werkelijk effect te detecteren over de variabelen geheugen en nieuwigheid tussen jongere en oudere volwassenen. Toekomstig onderzoek zou zich kunnen richten op het meten van motivatie en het manipuleren van nieuwigheid na verloop van tijd. Daarnaast zou het interessant zijn om de relatie tussen dopaminefuncties en nieuwigheid nader in kaart te brengen, om de ontwikkeling van interventies en behandelingen op het gebied van motivatie en mentale gezondheid te bevorderen.Show less

Yet, in current research practices, asymmetrical...Show moreResearch has shown that the left and right hemispheres display different neural atrophy patterns in the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Yet, in current research practices, asymmetrical patterns are not usually considered during classification analyses. Therefore, in this study we analysed the difference in classification accuracy between the left and right hemisphere for different stages of the disease. To further analyse the impact of asymmetric neural atrophy, we calculated an asymmetry score to include in the classification analyses. The sample consisted out of 173 healthy controls and 75 AD patients divided in two groups: 38 mild AD patients and 37 with severe AD (based on MMSE-scores). The classification analyses were performed using a logistic regression analysis with a LASSO penalty including a nested cross-validation procedure to improve the reliability of our analyses. We found that in the case of both mild and severe AD, the combined model (left + right hemisphere) showed that the left hemisphere was better in classifying AD. However, in severe AD the model included more predictors from the right hemisphere, indicating that the right hemisphere offers valuable information in classifying severe AD. We found that asymmetry scores did improve classification accuracy for mild AD. In contrast, this was not the case for severe AD, since asymmetric atrophy diminishes as AD progresses. Furthermore, asymmetry on its own was consistently shown to be a poor predictor of AD. This could possibly be attributed to the calculation method of asymmetry in our study. Overall, our findings contribute to the idea of asymmetric neural atrophy in AD and the emphasize the need for further investigation into the calculation of asymmetry scores.Show less

A...Show moreClimate change is a severe threat to current and especially to future generations (IPCC, 2023), which indicates the importance of collective action and engaging younger people in the issue. A barrier to this action and engagement is climate change skepticism, which is the doubt of the existence or severity of climate change, its consequences or anthropogenic origin. This study aimed to research whether people low in self-efficacy concerning climate change will try to cope with this sense of powerlessness by avoiding the topic of climate change, which then evolves into a skeptic attitude towards or even denial of its existence, its consequences or anthropogenic origin. As such, we examined the relationship between self-efficacy and skepticism, mediated by climate change interest. We obtained correlational data with an online, self-report questionnaire, distributed among 16- to 24-year-olds (N = 408). The mediation analysis yielded a significant and negative full mediation, meaning that if self-efficacy is low, climate change interest is low, and if climate change interest is low, skepticism is high. This underscores the importance of increasing self-efficacy in older adolescents and young adults in order to increase climate change interest, which consequently influences the degree of skepticism. Thus, these insights can be used for designing techniques that foster climate change interest in this age group.Show less

Dit fenomeen noemen we besmettelijke jeuk. In andere besmettelijke gedragingen (zoals gapen) komt de rol van empathie naar voren. Er is nog niet veel onderzoek gedaan naar de mogelijke invloed van empathie op besmettelijke jeuk. Neurologische studies vinden activatie van hersengebieden tijdens besmettelijke jeuk, welke geassocieerd worden met affectiviteit. Eén eerder onderzoek toont aan dat er geen associatie is tussen empathie en besmettelijke jeuk. In deze scriptie wordt met een regressieanalyse getoetst of mensen met hogere mate van empathie meer jeuk ervaren na het zien van iemand met een huidaandoening, dan mensen met lagere mate van empathie. In het onderzoek werd de participanten een audiovisuele stimulus getoond, waarna een zelfrapportage van intensiteit van opgeroepen jeuk werd ingevuld. Empathie is berekend met de totaalscore van een vragenlijst. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat empathie geen significante voorspeller is van de mate van intensiteit van opgeroepen jeuk bij het zien van een huidaandoening. Echter bevat dit onderzoek wat limitaties zoals de relatief lage gemiddelde empathiescore van de steekproef. Mogelijk biedt verder onderzoek naar de eventuele invloed van empathie op besmettelijke jeuk bij bekenden, en de eventuele invloed van aparte dimensies van empathie, ruimte voor nieuwe inzichten.Show less
This study examines how organisational features (transparency and competence) and individual characteristics (altruism and empathy, including empathic concern and perspective-taking) influence the...Show moreThis study examines how organisational features (transparency and competence) and individual characteristics (altruism and empathy, including empathic concern and perspective-taking) influence the voluntary assistance offered by the general public to four non-profit organisations (NPOs), with a focus on financial donations. These NPOs are, further, ones they would not typically donate to. Organisations were presented to the participants, who completed an online questionnaire. The data acquired was then subjected to statistical analysis. From the data of 98 participants in English-speaking countries recruited via Academic Prolific, statistical analyses unveiled pivotal roles played by organisational transparency and empathy in shaping support for NPOs. Notably, participants exhibiting empathic traits demonstrated a heigher likelihood of financially supporting organisations. Mediation analysis revealed that when people perceived the organisation as transparent, it increased the willingness to donate money to the organisation because of the instilled inclination to help the organisation. Mediation analysis further revealed that empathy made people more willing to help and, therefore, contribute money to the organisation. Contrary to expectations, moderation analysis did not reveal any significant interaction coefficients. Discussions encompass theoretical and practical implications and address strengths, and limitations, and recommendations for future research.Show less
The present study experimentally investigated the role of rejection sensitivity during adolescence and young adulthood on the ability of predicting the chance of receiving positive peer feedback....Show moreThe present study experimentally investigated the role of rejection sensitivity during adolescence and young adulthood on the ability of predicting the chance of receiving positive peer feedback. Previous studies examined trait characteristics, neural correlates and social learning of socially anxious individuals and found that rejection sensitivity has a negative impact on how one predicts and implements positive feedback. Participants (132 adults and 61 adolescents) took part in a social learning paradigm, wherein they had to predict whether four of their peers would like or dislike them based on certain personality characteristics. To see if learning biases are present, the scores of the participants were operationalized by calculating the Positive Prediction Discrepancy (PPD), the difference between the expected ratio of positive feedback and the actual probability of it. Unknown to the participants, the four peers differed in the probability of giving positive feedback. Results indicated that neither rejection sensitivity (RS) nor age significantly predicted PPD scores for peer 1, peer 3, and peer 4. However, RS exhibited a significant negative effect on PPD scores for peer 2, suggesting that higher RS was associated with lower predictions of positive feedback for this peer. Altogether, this study suggests that while rejection sensitivity did show a significant negative relationship with positive prediction discrepancy for peer 2, there was no significant impact observed for the other peers or with age across the different peer feedback anticipation discrepancies. This indicates a nuanced association between rejection sensitivity and the anticipation of positive feedback, particularly in specific peer contexts, rather than a generalized effect across all peers.Show less
