A possible connection to gender and age was also investigated. In this study four basal psychosocial skills were investigated, namely: ‘relational skills’, ‘affective skills’, ‘selfcontrol’ and ‘self-awareness’. By means of a questionnaire filled in by parents and guardians data was collected of 408 youngsters aged four to eighteen years old. The research questions have been answered by means of multiple variance analyses. Youngsters with ADHD and/or autism have less developed psychosocial skills compared to youngsters without a developmental disorder. In this case youngsters with only ADHD and youngsters with only autism have better social skills than youngsters with both ADHD and autism. Between youngsters with ADHD and youngsters with autism there were no noticeable differences, but girls have developed better psychosocial skills than boys. These results can be used by parents, teachers and social workers to offer extra support to youngsters with ADHD and/or autism with regard to the development of their psychosocial skills. This way youngsters with ADHD and/or autism can hopefully develop these skills in a better way, which could contribute to their performance and wellbeing.Show less

The sample consisted of a total of 453 children, the parents/guardians were asked to fill in on the internet the Social Emotional Questionnaire (SEV) and the Questionnaire Psychosocial Skills (VPV). The age of the children was between 4 and 18 years, with a mean age of 11.3 years (SD = 3.54). The group consisted of 256 boys (56.5%) and 197 girls (43.5%) with 9.5% of the children are diagnosed with ASS, 12.1% are diagnosed with ADHD and 10.6% diagnosed with ASS and ADHD. The findings showed that children with ASS and/or ADHD show a distinct disadvantage in psychosocial behavioral skills compared to children without a developmental disorder. In addition, children with only ASS or ADHD had better skills than children with comorbid ASS and ADHD. Children with ASS scored lower on the relational and affective skills than children with ADHD. The study further showed that 12-to-18-years-old children have better affective skills and self-awareness than 4-to-12-years-old children. It was also found that girls have more affective skills and self-management skills than boys. This study contributes to detecting deficits in the psychosocial development in an early stage, so that appropriate help can be offered that will possibly prevent further stagnation or even improve psychosocial skills in children with ASS and/or ADHD.Show less

Show less

The goal of inclusive education is to have education in which all children can develop optimal cognitive, social and emotional skills. Currently, the selection of the type of special education for children with a handicap and/or behavioral problems is based on the diagnosis of the developmental disabilities of the child. In inclusive education, the educational needs of the child constitute the starting point. Teachers favor these changes, but are afraid that the amount of children with behavioral problems in the classroom will increase. The principle of inclusive education will result in a different distribution of children with a behavioral problem in the three different types of education for children with educational needs: primary education, special primary education and specific needs education. Children with diagnosed ADHD will also be part of this redistribution. To be able to serve children with ADHD well, it is important to know what children with ADHD in special education programs need. This research aims to contribute to this by investigating the differences in psychosocial skills among children with ADHD in the three before mentioned types of education in Holland. The variables measured are: psychosocial skills, level of ADHD-symptoms, cognitive development, and family and demographic characteristics. The random sample consisted of 93 children aged 4-12 with (the presumption of) ADHD in the three types of education in Holland. The results show that the psychosocial skills of children with ADHD are good predictors of the three types of education the children with ADHD will get. The less well-developed the psychosocial skills are, the more specialized the level of special education is. The educational level of the wage-earner in the family en the gender of the child also are important predictors. What is striking, is that there is no difference in ADHD-symptoms between the three types of education. It is concluded from the research that inclusive education must focus on the psychosocial skills of children with ADHD and support the development of these skills in primary education to optimum achieve the goals of inclusive education.Show less

They have qualitative impairments in social interactions, in communication and have restricted, repetitive, stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities. In addition, it is not always clear which disorders co-occur with autism and what the impact is on the psychosocial skills. The thesis is: "What is the relationship between autism, comorbid disorders and psychosocial skills? '. Primary and secondary schools were approached and asked to spread a letter amongst the parents, in which the parents and the child were asked to individually and independently fill in a questionnaire on the internet. The ‘Vragenlijst Psychosociale Vaardigheden’ (VPV) measures the psychosocial skills of young people and is used to compare these skills between different groups of young people. The sample consisted of 432 children and adolescents. The study shows that autism relatively often associates with ADHD and less often with anxiety disorders and ODD / CD. Also, the results show that children and adolescents with autism have developed less relational and affective skills than children and adolescents without a disorder and children and adolescents with a disorder other than autism. Furthermore, the self-awareness of children and adolescents with autism is less developed than that of children and adolescents without a disorder, but better developed than that of children and adolescents with autism and comorbid disorders. In addition, the self-management of young people with autism is less developed than that of children and adolescents without a disorder, are children and young people with autism and ADHD not facing more problems with self-management than the other research groups and are young people with autism and ODD / CD facing problems with all psychosocial skills. Finally, the study shows that the level of psychosocial skills of children and adolescents with autism is lower when comorbid disorders are present.Show less

Show less

Show less

Show less

Also the effects of gender and age were studied. Participants were recruited via regular/special primary and secondary schools in the Netherlands. The sample consists of 374 adolescents between 12 and 18 years old. The disorders of the children were classified by the ODD/CD-symptoms ratings of parents. Parents further were asked to fill in an experimental questionnaire measuring general adaptive skills in youth. Results show that adolescents with ODD and CD have fewer adaptive skills than their typical peers, in the following areas: contact with peers, contact with parents, adults and authority, school/work and future, autonomy and self-directedness. The adaptive skills of youth with co-morbid ODD and CD were the least developed. The adaptive skills of adolescents with only ODD and only CD did not differ significantly. Here the least developed skills related to ‘autonomy and self-directedness’. Gender and age do not affect the levels of adaptive skills.Show less

This diagnosis, however, gives no information about the child's psychosocial functioning. The present study examined on which domains of psychosocial behaviour children in the age 9 to 18 years old with ASS and/or ADHD show deficiencies. The study has a cross-sectional descriptive research design. Regular and special primary and secondary schools parents were asked to fill in on the Internet the Social Emotional Questionnaire (SEV) and the Questionnaire Psychosocial Skills (VPV) about their child. The sample consisted of 343 Dutch school children, including 187 boys (54.5%) and 156 girls (45.5%) in the age 9 to 18 years (M = 13.05, SD = 2.36). The findings showed that school-age children with ASS and/or ADHD compared to school-age children without a developmental disorder show a distinct disadvantage in terms of the relational and affective skills, self-management and self-awareness. The study also found that school-aged children with ADHD compared with school-age children with ASS have more relational skills. The study further showed that school-age children in the age group 14 to 18 years do have more relational and affective skills and self-awareness than children in the age 9 to 13 years. It was also found that girls have more relational and affective skills and self-management than boys. The findings of this study suggest the importance of detecting deficits in the psychosocial development of children with ASS and ADHD in an early stage, so that offering appropriate help immediately thereafter can possibly prevent further stagnation or even promote improvement of skills.Show less
