Er is minimaal een persoon nodig om een bonus voor de groep te kunnen bewerkstelligen. Dit doen ze echter meestal niet, omdat het gunstiger is een ander dit te laten doen. Er is onderzocht of gelijkenissen tussen groepsleden leidt tot het vaker vrijwillig aanbieden bij het vrijwilligersdilemma. Deze gelijkenissen zijn de antwoorden op een aantal vragen en scoring van muzikale nummers. Het idee hierachter was dat de participanten een (versterkt) groepsgevoel zouden krijgen als ze op basis van hun antwoorden in een groep geplaatst werden en zich zo vaker vrijwillig zouden aanbieden. Er zijn drie groepen, de baseline, de gelijke groep en de ongelijke groep. Elke participant werd eerst in de baseline gedaan om te kijken hoe vaak men zich vrijwillig zou aanbieden bij een random groepsverband, om de resultaten te vergelijken met de andere groepen. De ongelijke groep houdt in dat participanten juist niet op elkaar leken met de gegeven antwoorden en zo is er gekeken of participanten zichzelf minder aan gingen bieden hierdoor. De gelijke groep was de groep waar participanten op basis van gelijke antwoorden bij de vragen in kwamen. De resultaten die uit dit onderzoek kwamen waren niet in lijn met de hypotheses. De gelijke en ongelijke groep had precies evenveel mensen die zich vrijwillig aanboden, hier was dus ook geen significante uitkomst.Show less

Many classical psychedelic users report that their psychedelic use is among one of their most meaningful experiences, thereby increasing the level of meaning in their life. Likewise, regular meditation practice also increases meaning by letting one focus on what is important in life. Considering this, psychedelic use and meditation can be potential treatments for mental health disorders. The aim of this study is to explore the extent to which meditation practise is correlated with meaning in life among psychedelic users. To investigate this, we distributed an online survey that included items about demographics, prior psychedelic and meditation experience, the Freiberg Mindfulness Inventory (FMI), and the Three-Dimensional Meaning in Life Scale (3DM). For the data analyses, we used two independent samples t-tests and two simple linear regression analyses. We first investigated whether among psychedelic users, meaning in life would be positively associated with life-time meditation experience, but we could not find significant results. Nonetheless, we did find that meditation practitioners have greater meaning in life in comparison to psychedelic users that do not meditate. Next, we looked if the purpose component of meaning in life would have the strongest correlation with life-time meditation experience among psychedelic users, compared to the other two components of MiL. Again, the results were insignificant so we cannot be certain that this is the case. Lastly, we looked if among psychedelic users, individuals who practise Metta meditation combined with a second meditation type would report greater meaning in life compared to those who only practise one meditation type. The results of this analysis were also insignificant. Considering psychedelic use and meditation practice still seem promising for countering mental health problems, more research needs to be done to attain a full understanding of the impact these methods can have in a therapeutic setting.Show less

It is part of a bigger research project that...Show moreThis study’s focus is on the effects that financial stress and academic stress have on proactive career behaviour in the university student population. It is part of a bigger research project that assesses the relationship between financial stress and proactive career behaviours, along with another series of predictors that are not the concern of this paper. University students are the target group whose highest stress factors include finances and academia, but also the population who is expected to start thinking about their future and future careers. One hundred fifty university students were recruited, and one hundred nineteen students were included in the analysis after the exclusion criteria. They were given a questionnaire where their levels of proactive career behaviour, financial stress, and academic stress were measured, as well as other variables that are not part of this study. It was hypothesized that financial stress negatively relates to proactive career behaviour in the student population, and, in turn, that academic stress negatively impacts proactive career behaviour in students. In this study, our hypotheses were not supported, with both financial stress and academic stress being unrelated to proactive career behaviours.Show less

Mensen kunnen hun macht echter op verschillende manieren conceptualiseren: als mogelijkheden of als verantwoordelijkheden. Wij hebben de relatie tussen de machtsperceptie en het nemen van risico’s (gemeten met de Balloon Analogue Risk Task; BART) onderzocht. Verder keken we naar de rol die de sociaaleconomische status (SES) zou kunnen spelen binnen dit verband. Ons onderzoek steunde de hypothesen niet, dit zou kunnen komen door beperkingen in de methodiek. Echter, werd er wel enige ondersteuning gevonden wanneer er alleen naar de middelste trials wordt gekeken. In conclusie zijn onze hypothesen dus niet ondersteund, maar lijkt er wel sprake te zijn van een verband tussen de machtsperceptie en het nemen van risico’s, in ieder geval tijdens bepaalde delen van de taak. Toekomstige onderzoeken zouden op andere manieren naar machtsperceptie en risico nemen kunnen kijken, om zo op meer verhelderende resultaten te komen.Show less

This thesis will focus on such a method, known as a multiverse analysis, which is used as a robustness check by reviewing alternative pathways for statistical analysis. A multiverse analysis will be applied to Davoli and colleagues’ (2020) research on arithmetic learning and posture. The original study investigated if posture impacted an individual's reaction time and arithmetic accuracy. The re-analysis of the raw data showed that the authors accurately reported their statistical results, but they lacked in describing their reasoning behind reaction time exclusion methods, and the inclusion of different within- subjects variables for their mixed-model ANOVAs. Therefore, the multiverse analysis looked at seven different reaction time exclusion methods, including no exclusions, Tukey’s method, two and three standard deviations exclusion method, the absolute cutoffs exclusion method, the 5% trimmed exclusion method, and the median absolute deviation exclusion (MAD) method. The multiverse analysis continued by including three different within-subjects variables in the mixed model ANOVA. The three different within-subjects variables were the testing blocks, the individual equations, and the equations categories (easy, medium, and hard). Out of the twenty-one pathways, only five are significant. However, there were some important limitations with Tukey’s method and the MAD exclusion method that changed the interpretations of the results. In addition, there are some limitations with the second ANOVA analysis method, using individual equations that limit the interpretations of the results. Therefore, this multiverse analysis concluded that the results are not fully robust, and to further assess the robustness additional experimental work could be considered to confirm original findings.Show less

Social fears in parents, transmitted via social learning, are one of the main risk factors contributing to the development of social fears. This thesis is the first to investigate the effect of parental verbal expression of fear versus safety, in social situations, on child’s avoidance, in the developmental period where there is an increase in social fears, that is between 10-13 years of age. We additionally investigated whether parental social anxiety moderated the effect of parental verbal expression and child's avoidance. In the study, 76 children between 10 and 14 years old (M = 11.62) participated together with their parents. Both parents reported their social anxiety in online questionnaires. During a lab visit, only the primary caregivers provided their children with a fear and safety message about two strangers. The child was then confronted with the two strangers, during social tasks. The avoidant behavior was measured during the social performance task. Our findings revealed no significant difference in child’s avoidance towards the two strangers. In other words, when a parent verbally expressed fear about a stranger, the child did not show more avoidant behavior than when the parent verbally expressed safety. Also, the moderating role of parental social anxiety was not significant within this effect. We concluded that the parent's verbal information did not influence child’s avoidance, in the social situations constructed in this experiment. However, this thesis gave us insights in the intergenerational transmission of social fears and provided a baseline for future research investigating the influences of parental verbal expression of social fears on children's avoidance.Show less

Echter richt veel literatuur naar...Show moreAchtergrond: uit veel onderzoeken blijkt dat suïcide een van de grootste oorzaken van overlijden is onder jongeren met een leeftijd tussen de 10-24 jaar. Echter richt veel literatuur naar suïcidaliteit zich op zelfdestructief gedrag, maar haalt daarbij het zelf/ik en zijn functies onvoldoende aan. Deze functies van het zelf/ik spelen ook een belangrijke verklarende rol in de mate van suïcidale ideatie en moeten daarom in onderzoeken worden meegenomen. Doel: in dit onderzoek wordt de invloed van RT op de mate van suïcidale ideatie onder adolescenten onderzocht. Methode: aan dit onderzoek deden 132 adolescenten van Nederlandse universiteiten met een leeftijd tussen 18 en 26 jaar mee. Resultaten: uit de resultaten is gebleken dat RD (r = 0.411, p < 0.05), UP (r = 0.450, p < 0.05) en HD (r = 0.223, p < 0.05) allemaal positief gecorreleerd waren met suïcidale ideatie. Verder is gebleken dat RD en HD significante voorspellers waren in het model voor de suïcidale ideatie onder adolescenten (F(2,119) = 17.9, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.243). Daarbij sloot HD niet aan bij het model en werd uitgesloten. Als laatste bleek dat UP (t = 3.166, p = 0.002) suïcidale ideatie het beste voorspelt. Discussie: RD en UP voorspellen significant de mate van suïcidale ideatie onder adolescenten. Daarbij is UP de beste voorspeller van suïcidale ideatie. Deze significante resultaten geven aan dat de onderliggende functies van het zelf/ik wel degelijk invloed hebben op suïcidale ideatie. Het is belangrijk dat er in de toekomst meer onderzoeken gedaan moeten worden naar de onderliggende functies van het zelf/ik en welke invloed dit kan hebben op suïcidale ideatie onder adolescenten zodat het aantal suïcidepogingen mogelijk zullen verminderen.Show less

In this...Show moreThis study examines the role of organizational competence and transparency, altruism, and identification with all humanity in willingness to help and donate to a non-profit organization. In this cross-sectional study, participants (n = 98) from Academic Prolific were shown a non-profit organization to which they were atypical due to their social identity. They were then asked questions that ascertained how competent and transparent they believed the organization is, how altruistic they were and how much they identified with all humanity. They were also asked questions to measure how willing they were to help the organization overall and how willing they were to specifically donate money to the organization. Direct effects were tested for with multiple regression analyses. These showed that organizational competence is not significantly related to willingness to help, while organizational transparency is. The analyses also showed that altruism is not significantly related to willingness to help while identification with all humanity is. Mediation and moderation analyses were also performed. The results imply that a non-profit organization would be better able to reach their donation goals if they focused more on their perceived transparency rather than competence. Advertising to people who greatly identify with all humanity could also be beneficial. Strengths and limitations are discussed and suggestions for new research are proposed.Show less

(2011) suggests a reluctance to...Show moreThis study investigates the impact of direct gaze, pupil size, and the type of agent (human or robot) on individuals' honesty. Previous research by Shalvi et al. (2011) suggests a reluctance to engage in small lies due to the mental toll of dishonesty, and a general aversion to lying has been found by Hurkens & Kartik (2008). A coin-toss game against three different agent types (human, robot, and avatar) has been played by the participants. The participant could gain money when they reported to have made a correct prediction. Contrary to expectations, a direct gaze with larger pupils did not significantly increase honesty compared to a direct gaze with smaller pupils, and participants did not exhibit significantly different lying behaviors towards robots versus humans. Possible explanations include the relatively small sample size, suggesting the need for replication with a larger sample size. Additionally, the study prompts further investigation into the internal considerations and moral weight influencing lying behaviors. This research underscores the importance of replication studies and highlights potential complexities in human honesty.Show less

Stigmatisering kan veel negatieve gevolgen hebben, bijvoorbeeld op de mentale gezondheid van de getroffene. Daarom is het belangrijk dat er meer duidelijkheid komt over wie er stigmatiseert zodat er passende interventies ontwikkeld kunnen worden. Het doel van dit onderzoek is dan ook om inzicht te krijgen in de mate van publieke stigmatisering van psoriasispatiënten en te achterhalen of er genderverschillen spelen bij de mate van stigmatisering. Om dit te onderzoeken is een cross-sectioneel within-subjects onderzoek uitgevoerd. Respondenten hebben een online survey ingevuld waarbinnen zij verschillende video’s te zien kregen. Voor dit onderzoek zijn twee van deze video’s gebruikt, één video toonde iemand zonder zichtbare psoriasis en de andere video toonde iemand met zichtbare psoriasis. Na elke video werden vragenlijsten over publiek stigma afgenomen. De data van 120 respondenten zijn gebruikt. Uit het onderzoek is naar voren gekomen dat de mate van publieke stigmatisering significant hoger ligt ten opzichte van iemand met zichtbare psoriasis vergeleken met iemand die dat niet heeft (t(119) = 6.55, p < .001). Verder is gebleken dat gender van de waarnemer geen significant effect heeft op de mate van publieke stigmatisering (t(58.97) = 0.95, p = .346). Het significante effect van zichtbare psoriasis op publiek stigma toont aan dat er nog veel winst te behalen valt op het gebied van stigmavermindering. Nu we weten dat gender geen significante effecten heeft op publiek stigma bij psoriasis, weten we dat interventies gefocust moeten worden op alle genders.Show less

Er zijn aanwijzingen voor sekseverschillen in de prevalentie en uiting van de...Show moreDe prevalentie van de Ziekte van Alzheimer wordt steeds hoger door de toegenomen levensverwachting van de bevolking. Er zijn aanwijzingen voor sekseverschillen in de prevalentie en uiting van de Ziekte van Alzheimer, wat mogelijk ook de classificatie accuratesse kan beïnvloeden. In dit onderzoek wordt er gekeken of er een sekseverschil in classificatie accuratesse is op basis van een sMRI-model, een fMRI-model en een gecombineerd model. De verwachting was dat er met het MRI-model een hogere accuratesse werd gevonden voor vrouwen dan voor mannen, door een hogere mate van atrofie in de hippocampus en van de grijze stof bij vrouwen. Tevens werd er verwacht dat van de drie modellen, het gecombineerde model een hogere accuratesse op zou leveren dan de unimodale modellen. De steekproef bestaat uit 249 proefpersonen. Hiervan zijn er 76 gediagnosticeerd met de Ziekte van Alzheimer, de overige 173 zijn gezonde ouderen. Er zijn 104 mannen, waarvan 30 gediagnosticeerd met de Ziekte van Alzheimer en 74 gezonde ouderen. En er zijn 145 vrouwen, waarvan 46 gediagnosticeerd met de Ziekte van Alzheimer en 99 gezonde ouderen. De modellen zijn gefit aan de hand van een logistische regressie met LASSO penalty. Uit de resultaten bleek dat er bij mannen door alle modellen met een hogere accuratesse (AUC respectievelijk 0.974, 0.655, 0.978) onderscheid gemaakt kon worden tussen de patiënten en gezonde ouderen. Hierna volgde de gehele steekproef (AUC 0.935, 0.735, 0.935), en voor vrouwen werd de laagste accuratesse gevonden voor alle modellen (0.881, 0.612, 0.885). Het gecombineerde model leverde de hoogste accuratesse op voor mannen en vrouwen, maar werd geen bewijs gevonden voor de hypothese dat vrouwen met hogere accuratesse geclassificeerd konden worden aan de hand van het MRI model. Voor alle drie de modellen werd er een verschil gevonden in accuratesse tussen mannen en vrouwen. Er is verder onderzoek vereist naar de invloed van sekse op ZvA om deze verschillen te kunnen verklaren. Het meenemen van sekse kan mogelijk leiden tot een hogere accuratesse ZvA diagnose.Show less

Als niemand een...Show moreAbstract Het vrijwilligersdilemma, geïntroduceerd door Diekmann, houdt in dat één persoon een offer moet brengen zodat anderen in de groep hier vervolgens een voordeel uit halen. Als niemand een offer brengt, is iedereen in de groep slechter af. Dit sociale dilemma kan beïnvloed worden door verschillende factoren. In dit experiment is er onderzoek gedaan naar de invloed van (on)gelijkheid in interesses en voorkeuren van individuen op het vaker samenwerken van groepen participanten in het vrijwilligersdilemma. Voor dit onderzoek zijn 60 participanten boven de 18 jaar uitgenodigd om naar een onderzoekslab van de Universiteit Leiden te komen. Voor het design is er gebruik gemaakt van twee tussen-proefpersonen condities met 30 participanten per experimentele conditie, met allereerst een baseline meting. Achter een computer kreeg iedere participant 20 vragen over de onderwerpen muziek, sport, eten en kleuren en vervolgens werden hen verschillende vragen gesteld om de mate van gevoel van gelijkheid met de groep te meten. Gebleken is dat (on)gelijkheid in interesses en voorkeuren geen significant effect heeft op het aantal vrijwilligers in het vrijwilligersdilemma en zo ook op samenwerking. Het doel van dit onderzoek was het verwerven van nieuwe informatie over de invloed van gelijkenissen tussen mensen op hun samenwerking in een sociaal dilemma. Dit zou nieuwe perspectieven van samenwerking kunnen geven, een fenomeen wat dagelijks voorkomt in verschillende contexten en sectoren.Show less
The study analyzed language switching in bilingual psychotherapy and its impact on therapeutic alliance. 134 psychotherapy clients in the Netherlands participated in an online survey which included...Show moreThe study analyzed language switching in bilingual psychotherapy and its impact on therapeutic alliance. 134 psychotherapy clients in the Netherlands participated in an online survey which included the California Psychotherapy Alliance Scales - Patient Version and language-related questions. Analyses of Variances and Multiple Regression Analyses were conducted to investigate the effects. The findings indicate no significant correlation between language switching by the client and therapeutic alliance, but language switching by the therapist was associated with lower scores on the Patient Working Capacity (PWC) subscale. Discussing language switching was also negatively associated with the PWC and the Therapists' Understanding and Involvement (TUI) subscales. Language switching due to language barriers (dominant to non-dominant) and to distance oneself (non-dominant to dominant) were associated with lower alliance scores. Excluding Dutch-dominant psychotherapy clients, only the associated negative contribution of language switching to distance oneself remained significant. The findings highlight the complexity and universality of language switching and the importance of linguistic awareness among practitioners, particularly regarding the challenges of language barriers and their adverse effect on therapeutic alliance. Aiming to contribute to the evolving field of bilingual and multicultural psychotherapy, this study’s findings and limitations inspire future research on a linguistic technique yet not fully understood.Show less
