The purpose of this thesis is to find out if China’s efforts to assimilate Tibet by implementing a strict tourism policy are genuinely intended to value local culture or if the introduction of...Show moreThe purpose of this thesis is to find out if China’s efforts to assimilate Tibet by implementing a strict tourism policy are genuinely intended to value local culture or if the introduction of tourism in Tibet merely is a government tool to provide the urban middle-class Han Chinese with a ‘natural theme park’ regardless of the environmental and/or cultural impact. The latter hypothesis is generally being supported by western critics, the former being a widely accepted statement in China (excluding its autonomous regions) and pro-Chinese elsewhere. As is the case with many Chinese state policies, their true intentions are debatable which I aspire to settle. To assess this, I have critically examined both theories in relation to projects and practices in the Tibetan tourism industry led by the Chinese government. Tourism nowadays comprises a spectrum of categories. Not every type of tourism is applicable to Tibet or simply has not set foot on Tibetan soil, so it is important to determine which tourism types are to be found, which ones are popular and which ones have potential. Therefore, categorizing the types of tourism in Tibet, which will be judged by the popularity among domestic tourists, have provided a basis in terms of scope. Other essential aspects, such as target audience, decisions by the Chinese government of when to invest in tourism projects and with what reasons, have been looked at extensively. Tourism-oriented projects and tourism-related implementations of roughly the last thirty years have been analyzed separately as case-studies, within the frame of three prominent types of domestic tourism in Tibet, Nature-based tourism, Active tourism and Cultural Tourism, in order to redefine the aforementioned aspects. This study found out that there is a significant inconsistency in government claims regarding Tibetan tourism policies. Although profound conclusions are beyond the bounds of possibility, a clear trend in rephrasing and/or radical change of reasoning in why the state invests in multimillion dollar Tibetan tourism projects may indicate China’s true intentions of exploiting the Tibetan land. Furthermore, this thesis increases our understanding of the term ‘invented tourism’, tourism-related implementations in Tibet and the general focus of the Chinese government in regard to tourism project investment.Show less

It is the social institution that either formalizes legally or in a religious ceremony the commitments, whish or decision of a couple to lead a married life together and probably the promise to establish a family on their own. An old Chinese saying: ‘When boys and girls reach adulthood they should get married’, is a good way to illustrate the average thinking of Chinese society. The importance of marriage has its roots in the Confucian ideology and Chinese are obsessed with it. This refers particularly to the values that are attached to the continuation of the family line and filial piety. Marriage has always been promoted as the establishment of a family as the basic building block of Chinese society. There is very little space for an alternative lifestyle other than a married life; it is the norm in China. Marriage can then be considered as an ultimatum, and disapproves of those who choose to stay single. If you do not marry, you are basically not taken very seriously and considered immature. Outside of marriage are no alternatives easily recognized. Your behavior is labeled as if you are socially irresponsible.So views the Chinese government that severe sex ratio imbalance as a threat to social stability and harmony. In 2007 China’s State council started with a population policy improving the quality of the newborn population. In addition, The ACWF has determined a term; shengnü (剩女 / Leftover women), and was later officially recognized as a term by the Ministry of Education. Since then the government and state media started a campaign to discourage women to stay single or delaying their age of marriage. Women over 27 and single were branded as Leftover women.Show less

Een outlet store is een winkel waar niet-courante collecties van (Westerse) merkproducten worden verkocht voor 30% tot 70% van de oorspronkelijke prijs. Aangezien er nog geen eerder onderzoek is gedaan naar het consumptiegedrag van Chinese toeristen in outlet stores, ben ik zelf onderzoek gaan doen in de Designer Outlet Roermond, het grootste outlet center van Nederland en onderdeel van McArthurGlen Designer Outlets. Bij dit onderzoek werden Chinese toeristen gevraagd een enquête in te vullen, waarbij ze hun mening moesten geven over merkproducten in outlet stores. Aan de hand van de resultaten van deze enquêtes kan geconcludeerd worden dat: (1) Chinese toeristen de symbolische waarde van een Westers merkproduct uit een outlet store niet minder vinden dan uit een flagship store; (2) sociale status een steeds minder belangrijke reden is om merkproducten te kopen; (3) de Designer Outlet Roermond is succesvol in het verlenen van gastvrijheid aan de ChinezenShow less

Also, purchasing behaviour studies...Show moreAlthough many studies have researched consumer purchasing behaviour in general, relatively few studies on car purchasing behaviour are publically available. Also, purchasing behaviour studies focusing on both car segments and cross-cultural car purchasing behaviour are limited available. Nor did these studies include the role of materialism in their research on car buying decision making process. In addition, no study has yet conducted research on the comparison of Sino-European car segment buying behaviour. Besides contributing to the corporate automotive sector, this bachelor thesis is written in the context of Chinese Consumption Culture, with the aim to extend the existing academic literature on cross-cultural consumption behaviour by researching and identifying to what extent differences in consumer characteristics – including culture (Dutch versus urban Chinese) and materialism - affect the consumer’s car segment buying decision making process. Overall, the results have proven that (1) cultural differences between Chinese and Dutch (Non-Chinese) people affect differences regarding the consumer’s car segment buying decision in the following manner: Chinese cultural concepts Face, Family relationships and Sense of shame are positively correlated with Car segment. This implies-, that the higher the score on Chinese culture is, the higher the score on Car segment. Chinese-national respondents in this study generally scored higher on Chinese culture than Dutch nationals. Thus, culture differences affect differences in the consumer’s car segment buying decision. (2) Differences in Materialism as consumer characteristic do also influence the consumer’s car segment buying decision. The more materialistic, the higher the car segment. Thus, differences on materialism affect differences regarding the consumer’s car segment buying decision. (3) Multiple consumer characteristics may interact, causing a leverage or “turbo” effect regarding the consumer’s car segment buying decision. For example, if a person is both Chinese and highly materialistic, a leverage effect takes place on car segment buying decision – thus scoring higher on car segment than cases with no interaction.Show less

Eerst wordt beschreven hoe dit beleid tot stand is gekomen, vervolgens zullen een aantal belangrijke uitzonderingen op dit beleid en een aantal grote problemen die ontstaan zijn door dit beleid worden besproken. Ten slotte gaat het laatste hoofdstuk over het effect en de toekomst van geboortebeperking. Samenvattend heeft de Eenkindpolitiek sinds de invoering grote problemen veroorzaakt, zoals vergrijzing, een teruglopende beroepsbevolking en een zeer scheve man-vrouwverhouding. Ook raakt de Chinese bevolking er steeds meer aan gewend dat zij slechts één kind kunnen krijgen, en willen veel koppels er zelfs niet meer dan één. Dit zorgt echter voor een onevenwichtige bevolkingsontwikkeling. Het is daarom belangrijk dat China en haar overheid hier in de toekomst de nodige aandacht aan besteden, de Eenkindpolitiek verder versoepelen en uiteindelijk wellicht zelfs afschaffen.Show less
In mijn scriptie onderzoek ik op wat voor manieren het personage Lin Daiyu (uit de Chinese roman 'De droom van de rode kamer') emotionele uitbarstingen heeft en hoe deze in verband staan met haar...Show moreIn mijn scriptie onderzoek ik op wat voor manieren het personage Lin Daiyu (uit de Chinese roman 'De droom van de rode kamer') emotionele uitbarstingen heeft en hoe deze in verband staan met haar mentale en geestelijke gezondheid. Eerst geef ik informatie over de roman, het personage, emoties en ziektebeeld in China enzovoorts. Vervolgens maak ik een analyse aan de hand van fragmenten uit de roman en deze analyseer ik in het raamwerk van traditionele Chinese concepten die onder andere in de traditionele Chinese geneeskunde terug te vinden zijn. Na de analyse kwam ik tot de conclusie dat de emoties en het ziek zijn van Daiyu met elkaar verweven zijn. De manier waarop ze met elkaar verweven zijn is goed verklaarbaar aan de hand van traditioneel Chinese concepten.Show less

Despite this relatively small percentage,...Show moreAccording to the 2000 Census, only 8.41 percent of the population of the People's Republic of China belonged to one of the 55 recognized ethnic minorities. Despite this relatively small percentage, western media regularly report about ethnic violence in the PRC. This thesis examines preferential policies, a solution of the PRC government to stabilize ethnic tensions within its territories. After providing a brief understanding of living conditions for ethnic minorities in China, the thesis outlines challenges for both the ethnic minorities and the PRC government and continues by a detailed explanation of the Law on Regional Ethnic Autonomy and the preferential policy on minority education enrollment, followed by an analysis of the actual results of the policies. The thesis concludes by stating that the preferential policies both work and do not work. There is an increase in the literacy rate of minorities that can be contributed to the policies. At the same time, however, the preferential policies seem to be both a result and a source of Han-centered discrimination of ethnic minorities.Show less

Naar...Show moreIn 2008 werd de Chinese provincie Sichuan getroffen door een hevige aardbeving die een kracht van 8.0 op de schaal van Richter had en grote schade aanrichtte in verschillende gebieden. Naar aanleiding van deze aardbeving zijn verscheidene documentaires gemaakt waarvan sommige algemene informatie geven en andere bepaalde kwesties aan het daglicht stellen. De informatieve en vooral propagandistische documentaires zijn afkomstig van de nationale staatstelevisiemaatschappij CCTV (China Central Television), terwijl in onafhankelijke documentaires vaak een specifieke boodschap centraal staat. Deze onafhankelijke filmmakers belichten enkele kwesties die na de aardbeving zijn ontstaan en voor flinke oproer hebben gezorgd onder de Chinese burgers. In deze scriptie worden drie documentaires geanalyseerd die verschillen en overeenkomsten in de voorstelling van elke filmmaker aantonen.Show less
