It produced...Show moreThis research uses the disease of osteoarthritis in order to investigate the activity patterns of a rural and an urban environment in the Netherlands during the post-medieval period. It produced two datasets with matching criteria obtained from the skeletal assemblages of the heavily researched rural site of Middenbeemster and the relatively new urban site of Arnhem. Historical literature is combined with osteoarthritis prevalence give a more clear and detailed image of past activity patterns. This literature has provided this research with the knowledge that Middenbeemster was a dairy farming community, while Arnhem was a city with a focus on the beer brewing industry. Different markers on the bones associated with osteoarthritis resulted in differences in osteoarthritis prevalence. This differences were not only investigated within the environments but also between the environments. In the urban environment a sexual division of labour was seen, while in the rural environment men and women performed similar strenuous activities. Besides this, it is evident that industrial city life was more strenuous on the bodies of individuals than farming life was during the post-medieval period in the Netherlands.Show less

We use...Show moreWe first introduce the concept of partner potentials in non-relativistic quantum mechanics, i.e. a pair of potentials with the same spectrum, possibly except for a zero-energy ground state. We use this to define a family of partner potentials, giving us a technique to calculate the entire spectrum of a potential. The mechanism of partner potentials is then used for a quantum mechanical model of supersymmetry. It turns out that a special class of potentials exists where the spectrum can be determined very quickly using the techniques developed. We explore some of these potentials, called shape invariant potentials or SIPs and discover some simple properties of them. Finally, we take a quick look at a Hamiltonian with a $p^4$ term in it, discovering that for a small class of potentials, we can make a supersymmetric quantum mechanical model out of it.Show less

The...Show moreDworkin’s non-ideal theory of justice has been criticized for its lack of practical guidance and for being insufficiently consistent with the normative framework developed in his ideal theory. The ideal/non-ideal distinction has gotten a lot of attention in the past decades and recent literature points to the need to focus on the implementation of theories of justice in non-ideal circumstances (Wolff, 1998; Anderson, 1999; Arneson, 2000; Farelly, 2007; Swift, 2008; Stemplowska, 2008; Robeyns, 2008). Is there a way in which we can overcome the criticism of Dworkin and live up to the demand of a satisfying theory of justice that has a coherent and sound ideal and non-ideal component? By critically analysing the primary problems residing in either the ideal-, non-ideal theory or the relation between them I will aim to identify the main obstacles to the solvation of the ideal/non-ideal dichotomy. First of all I will argue that ideal- and non-ideal theory each have a distinct value and that their strength can be combined to realize a complete and satisfactory theory of justice. Subsequently, Dworkin’s ideal and non-ideal theory will be set forth in order to find out which aspects are problematic. Thereafter, in the following order, four different objections will be discussed resulting in four claims about Dworkin’s theory of justice. First of all the ‘shameful revelation’ objection will be addressed that claims any non-ideal implementation of Dworkin’s ideal theory will lead to immoral implications. Secondly, bad idealization will be exposed that allegedly obstruct the translation from ideal- to non-ideal theory. Thirdly, the negative impact of the controversial place of liberty in Dworkin’s ideal theory will be discussed. And finally the interpretation of the equity deficit in Dworkin’s asserted insufficient non-ideal theory of improvement will be scrutinized. In the end each claim tells us something about the way in which the apparent dichotomy between ideal- and non-ideal theory in Dworkin’s theory of justice can be resolved and lays out the first baby steps towards an improved and more coherent Dworkian theory of justice.Show less

In the Iranian literary tradition, the mirror was used as a metaphor of a woman: a passive, objective tool, emphasising the selflessness of a woman. Zhâle (1883-1946) and Farrokhzâd (1935-1967) are two Iranian female authors who both suffered from their society's oppressive assumptions of womanhood. They especially disputed the way Iranian literary and cultural traditions symbolised the mirror. This thesis analyses and compares Zhâle's and Farrokhzâd's personal backgrounds, poetry, and the use of the mirror in their poetry.Show less

Omdat onderzoek voornamelijk bij volwassenen is gedaan, richt het huidige onderzoek zich op het verband tussen inhibitie en psychopathische trekken bij kleuters. Aangezien kinderen in ontwikkeling zijn, is ook de variabele leeftijd meegenomen in het onderzoek. Ouders, van kinderen van vijf tot en met zeven jaar, hebben twee vragenlijsten ingevuld over hun kind (n = 162, M = 6.28, SD = 0.80). De Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), voor inhibitie, en de Child Problematic Traits Inventory (CPTI), voor psychopathische trekken bij kleuters. De resultaten impliceerden hoe minder inhibitievermogen, hoe meer psychopathische trekken bij kleuters (β =.02, p < .001. R² =.22, p < .001). Dit verband bleek niet te worden beïnvloed door de ontwikkeling van kinderen. Leeftijd had geen invloed op het inhibitievermogen (β =.62, p =.49. R² =.003, p =.49), psychopathische trekken bij kleuters (β = -.001, p =.97. R² <.001, p =.97) en het verband tussen inhibitie en psychopathische trekken bij kleuters (β =.003, p =.36). Geconcludeerd kan worden dat, net zoals bij volwassenen, ook bij kleuters een verminderd inhibitievermogen samenhangt met psychopathische gedragingen. Echter heeft leeftijd geen invloed op dit verband, of op deze variabelen. Dit houdt in dat psychopathische gedragingen stabiel blijven tussen minimaal vijf tot en met zeven jaar en dat hierdoor al vroegtijdig met een interventie kan worden begonnen.Show less

In dit graf bevonden zich 153 mummiekisten van Priesters van Amon uit de...Show moreSamenvatting In 1891 werd een belangrijk graf ontdekt in Deir el-Bahari, aan de andere kant van de Nijl bij Thebe in Egypte. In dit graf bevonden zich 153 mummiekisten van Priesters van Amon uit de 21e Dynastie (ca. 1070– 945 v.Chr.). De priesters lagen hier samen met hun familieleden, omringd door grafgiften. Het graf werd ontdekt door Eugène Grébaut en zijn assistent, George Daressy. Het graf kreeg de Arabische naam Bab el-Gasus, dat betekent 'de Deur van de Priesters'. Na de vondst in 1891 is het graf binnen negen dagen ontruimd. Helaas is door de snelheid waarmee het graf werd ontruimd, de archeologische context onvoldoende opgetekend. De priesters die in het graf werden gevonden, leefden in een tijd van politieke en economische onrust. Deze woelige periode bracht een verandering in visie en rituelen rond de dood met zich mee. De architectuur van het graf Bab el-Gasus laat een spaarzaam rotsgraf zien, zonder enige decoratie die een nauwkeurige datering mogelijk gemaakt zou hebben. Aan de hand van de literatuur is de conclusie dat het hier gaat om een secundaire begraving. De datering kan helaas niet worden vastgesteld door het ontbreken van gegevens en de vergissingen die tijdens en na de opgraving zijn gemaakt. Wel kan worden vastgesteld dat het graf moet zijn uitgebreid om alle priesters van Amon een plek te kunnen bieden.Show less

Chr. treden er significante veranderingen op. In de Ptolemeïsche en Romeinse periode vond er op het gebied van de dodencultus een geleidelijke vernieuwing plaats, waarbij Egyptische elementen werden gecombineerd met Grieks-Romeinse elementen. Bij deze vernieuwing werden de oude mummificatiepraktijken samengevoegd met de Romeinse dodencultus. Het resultaat hiervan zijn de zogenaamde Fajoemportretten. Deze scriptie zal zich concentreren op de Fajoemportretten uit Hawara, een vindplaats in de Fajoem-oase in Egypte en zal aan de hand van de Fajoemportretten zich richten op de vraag of er sprake is van continuïteit of verandering in de begrafenispraktijk in Egypte in de Hellenistische en Romeinse periode.Show less

Hierbij is uitsluitend gekeken naar botmateriaal...Show moreDit onderzoek behandeld Pleistoceen botmateriaal dat is verzameld door P.Stoel en afkomstig is uit de zandwinning-plas Cattenbroek nabij Woerden. Hierbij is uitsluitend gekeken naar botmateriaal afkomstig uit put ZLW_U. Het botmateriaal uit deze put is van belang omdat bekend is uit welke diepte het materiaal afkomstig is. Waardoor het mogelijk is om een biostratigrafische verdeling van het botmateriaal te maken. Als uitgangspunt voor dit onderzoek vormde de vraag of het mogelijk is om het onderste artefacten niveau, beter kan worden gedateerd met behulp van het zoölogisch materiaal. Waarbij er gekeken is naar de specifieke combinatie van soorten per geologische laag. De grootste clustering van het botmateriaal bevindt zich in de Formatie van Beegden 23 tot 36m –NAP. Deze laag bevat ruim 45% van het botmateriaal. De stratigrafische verdeling van het botmateriaal komt voor een groot deel overeen met de beschikbare OSL dateringen. Waarbij de soort Rangifer tarandus opvallende resultaten laat zien. Het onderste niveau de Formatie van Beegden is dankzij het voorkomen van specifieke soorten gedateerd als Holsteinien. Er heeft in dit niveau ook contaminatie plaatsgevonden met oudere lagen (Vroeg- tot Midden- Pleistoceen). Met het ontbreken van menselijke modificatie sporen op botmateriaal afkomstig uit put ZLW_U. Is het dateren van de vondstniveau vooralsnog niet mogelijk geweest.Show less
