It argues that the Pacification was the crucial treaty for the participation of the States and city of Utrecht in the Dutch Revolt because of its lack of coherency and clarity. This thesis explores the competing narratives about the meaning of this peace. The analysis focusses on the interests of different groups in city and the reinterpretations of the peace terms in the Pacification within the rapidly developing circumstances of the Dutch Revolt. The main argument is that the act of oblivion in the Pacification was the tacit driving force behind the competition of narratives about legitimacy. The Pacification successfully offered a tabula rasa for the previous decade and became the most important reference for peace negotiation between 1576 and 1581. The “originalist” narrative tried to stay with the Pacification terms as intended when it was signed in 1576; the “clarifying” narrative argued that the cherry-picked peace violations of the royal party – together with the changed circumstances – necessitated an elaboration of the original peace treaty; the “abnegation” narrative used these cherry-picked peace violations of the royal party to highlight the obsolesce of the treaty and framed the treaty’s failure as a reason to abjure king Philip. This last narrative flipped the Pacification on its head; the new continuity with the present was not based on the treaty’s terms but on its violation and frame of belonging to the past.Show less

Dit conflict had betrekking op de besteding van een derde van de inkomsten uit de vicarieën aan de traktementen van de gereformeerde predikanten op het platteland van het Hollandse Zuiderkwartier. The motives for this expulsion were by and large the same, as were the procedures taken to expel the Jesuits. Altogether, these three national expulsions can be seen as part of a trilateral diplomatic effort to convince the pope, the unequivocal leader of the Jesuits, to do the same. This article discusses the 'stages of expulsion' and the transnationality of the suppression of the Jesuits.Show less

Prestigious cities had more political power and influence in the province, which allowed them to secure their interests more effectively. Leiden's magistrate increased the city's prestige in the province by commissioning maps that reflected Leiden's urban identity and showed its importance in Holland between 1574 and 1700. Maps allowed urban magistrates to promote their cities to a larger audience compared to traditional works of art. Leiden's magistrate commissioned maps that reflected the importance of the relief of 1574 for the Dutch Revolt, the city's university, and its textile industry. By promoting these elements of Leiden's identity to a broad audience of elites and non-elites in the Dutch Republic and Europe, these maps increased Leiden's prestige in the political arena of Holland and secured the city's influence and power in the province.Show less

Ashworth getest, aan de hand van veranderingen in teksten en afbeeldingen van krokodillen in de zeventiende eeuw. Hierbij staat de omwenteling in de natuurlijke historie, waarbij de descriptieve aanpak de emblematische traditie in het beschrijven van exotische dieren verving, centraal. Volgens Ashworth deed deze omslag zich rond 1650 voor, door de ontdekking van diersoorten in de Nieuwe Wereld. Uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat deze ontwikkeling al in de tweede helft van de zestiende eeuw begon en dat dit werd gestimuleerd door de groeiende aanwezigheid van exotische dieren in verzamelingen, waardoor geleerden en kunstenaars deze dieren konden observeren.Show less

Aan...Show moreAan de hand van twee zogenaamde casussen heb ik onderzocht in hoeverre dynastieke huwelijken konden zorgen voor een stabiele en werkzame politieke relatie met het buitenland rond het jaar 1500. Aan het einde van de vijftiende eeuw domineerden dynastieke regels en praktijken de Europese hogere politiek. Regeerders en aankomende regeerders concurreerden niet alleen om hun eigen eer, prestige en territorium te vergroten, maar ook die van hun dynastie. Dit deden ze door middel van een aantal grondbeginselen, namelijk huwelijken, verovering en vererving. Een dynastiek huwelijk was een verbintenis tussen twee vorstenhuizen in het tijdperk van de dynastieën, ongeveer vanaf 1300 tot het einde van de negentiende eeuw. In deze periodes lag de politieke macht in het grootste deel van West-Europa bij families en het aangaan van verwantschapsbanden was dus regelrechte politiek. Een huwelijk diende politieke samenwerking te stimuleren, vrede en bondgenootschappen te versterken en te verlengen en conflicten te beëindigen. Twee wetenschappelijke concepten vormen de leidraad voor dit onderzoek, namelijk de theorie van dynastieke politiek en het concept van geschenk-uitwisseling. Zij zijn cruciaal om de door mij gestelde hoofdvraag te kunnen beantwoorden. De theorie van dynastieke politiek geeft inzicht in de denk- en handelspatronen van Europese vorsten en de manieren waarop zij hun dynastie probeerden veilig te stellen. De theorie van geschenk-uitwisseling laat zien hoe vorsten probeerden om een onderlinge afhankelijkheidsrelatie te creëren om elkaar te manipuleren, waarbij zelfs de bruid onderdeel was van de geschenken.Show less
