Tales from famous...Show moreFrom the very start of European involvement in East and Central Africa, Westerners were fascinated by the natural places and animals they encountered in this exotic continent. Tales from famous African explorers like Henry Morton Stanley and David Livingstone gave the impression of a dark and wild continent as opposed to the orderly and civilized Europe. In the early imperialistic period of Africa, European powers tried to implement their notion of nature to their colonial territories. That is to say, a strict division between what is considered nature and what is considered not. Through (neo)colonial ties a fabrication of nature has developed and affected the Sub-Saharan African landscape for more than 150 years. Colonial imposition of European ideas like the European hunting tradition, the Romantic notions about nature, imposition of economic development and wildlife conservation all had a lasting impact on the African continent. By means of colonization, but also long afterwards, Sub-Saharan Africa has thus been highly influenced by old Western notions about Africa's nature. This thesis sets out to discuss how the Western philosophy of the relation between human and nature has dominated and continues to dominate many places in Africa as Western conceptions of what nature is and what it is not are seemingly still present to this day and age.Show less

Over a 100 articles were extracted from the KB-Delpher database to analyse the changing press coverage by embedding this in wider literature regarding the restitution of colonial objects, (colonial) heritage and decolonization. An important element has...Show moreThe Open Deure, published in 1651 in Leiden, is well-known for its detailed account of the society and religious practices of the Brahmins in Pulicat, near modern Chennai. An important element has however been ignored by scholarship: the extensive annotations written by an unknown antiquarian scholar, identified only as A.W. in the preface to the main text. In the annotations A.W. contextualises and ‘translates’ Rogerius’s account into something relevant for a European scholarly audience; this gave the contemporary reader a framework with which to judge Rogerius's descriptions, lacking from the latter's dry and factual observations. The annotations argue for a monistic Neoplatonic understanding of the Brahmins' religious practices which A.W. readily states to bear the same basic truths that can be found in Christianity. On the other hand, his comparative model elevates the Brahmins' religion to a modern understanding of the term. A.W.’s footnotes showcase the larger discourses in Europe and the seventeenth century’s transformation of the concept of ‘religion’ - as well as the birth of comparative religion which accompanied it. The annotations of the Open Deure thus turn out to be integral to the contemporary understanding of Rogerius’s text and should be considered next to the main narrative.Show less

This work was called the 'Illustrations of Tributaries' (ch. Huang Qing zhigong tu). This thesis analyzes and compares the Manchu descriptions of the Europeans, and the peoples that directly bordered the Qing to the West. The relations and perceptions the Qing held were not only formed by the distance between themselves and these groups. Instead they were also influenced by the way the Qing interacted with the others and the reason relations had been formed. As a consequence, Qing officials saw great diversity in the European representatives, but saw less difference between the myriad of border peoples they discerned.Show less

Deze twee zaken worden bezien in een breed kader, waarbij zij aan het Nederlandse buitenlands-, veiligheidsbeleid en marinebeleid worden gekoppeld. Enkele conclusies luiden dat de strategie en inzet werden vormgegeven door de wens om na de soevereiniteitsoverdracht aan de Verenigde Staten van Indonesië in december 1949 wereldwijd actief te blijven en dat Nederland vanuit dit uitgangspunt langdurige en tamelijk succesvolle onderhandelingen met de Verenigde Staten van Amerika voerde over Amerikaanse betrokkenheid bij de verdediging van de strategisch belangrijke eilanden Aruba en Curaçao in oorlogstijd. Tot slot wordt betoogd dat de Haagse vrees voor Venezolaanse annexatiepogingen van de Benedenwindse Eilanden en de opkomst van het communisme in de regio een andere reden vormde voor de gekozen strategische koers. De strategie en inzet kunnen daardoor worden gezien als een samenspel tussen enerzijds de intrinsieke motivatie om wereldwijd actief te blijven en anderzijds externe druk om de verdediging in de West te versterken.Show less

By studying this journal and the cartographic material by Jan Christiaanz. Toorzee included therein the author argues that the late seventeenth century Ceylon office of the VOC pursued a policy focused on mercantile efforts rather than state-building, as was done before this period and after it. By using the cartographic material in the journal as an integral part of the text rather than a decorative element, new innovative insights are gained in the analysis of this period.Show less
