It does so by combining gender theory with a synchronic and diachronic visual analysis of a selection of posters. In doing so, it adds in diversifying an all too often monolithic understanding of North Korea.Show less

The presence of these foreigners, who bring with them their own customs and attitudes, has brought about the need for the rethinking of what it means to be a Korean citizen. One powerful way of shaping and changing society's views on national identity is through multicultural discourse in the national school curriculum. In this thesis I will review what changes the South Korean government has made tot the national curriculum, in order to broaden the meaning of South Korean national identity and accommodate the foreigners into society.Show less

It argues that the authoritarian imprint left on the political system’s institutional features by democratic transition has contributed to the politicization of print newspapers initially, and that of online newspapers subsequently. It also provides a critical reading of the methodological framework found in D. Hallin and P. Mancini’s Comparing Media Systems from the viewpoint of the ROK democratization experience.Show less

First active contact between North Korea and the international community was made during the Arduous March in 1995, when North Korea asked for humanitarian aid. Many of the diplomatic relations that were established between North Korea and other countries since then were halted due to the nuclear crisis in 2002. An exception was the EU, which kept providing humanitarian aid to North Korea. In this thesis, I compare the EU and U.S. policies on human rights and humanitarian aid in the mid 1990s and the early 2000s, in order to see both how the policies of the two parties differ from each other and how the policies differ in these two different time periods.Show less

Then, using the visual language of comics theory developed by Neil Cohn, the dialect of visual language used by Ch'oe Hyŏk is analysed and identified by looking at the graphic structure, morphology and narrative grammar. Drawing on Cohn's data, some comparisons are made with the attentional panel categories and filmic shot types of American and Japanese visual language. Based on this, there is an extrapolation as to possible influences on the comics work of Ch'oe Hyŏk.Show less
