However, throughout Amaral’s career as a painter, she sought ways to distinguish herself and to break away from European dominance. She dedicated herself to painting the local Brazilian landscape aiming at the revaluation of Brazil’s cultural and social features. Due to rapid industrialization and urbanization, urban life became a dominant topic among modernists. To embody the process of Brazil’s search for breaking away from European dominance, Oswald de Andrade excogitated the theory of Anthropophagy. The use of anthropophagy as a cultural metaphor is a way to visualize the process of the elimination of colonial domination. The present study is a visual analysis of paintings from Amaral and Léger which depict objects from urban life analyzed through the lens of the Anthropophagic theory. The research question is: How does Tarsila do Amaral adopt a decolonial aesthetic in relation to Fernand Léger in the representation of urban life?Show less

However, as...Show moreThe electoral victory new Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) in 2018 meant a major change in the country, as it was the first time a candidate from the left won. However, as statistical data show, president AMLO has a big task ahead of him, as homicide rates and violence within the country are spiraling. This research analyzes the characteristics of the use of violence within Mexico, and how this has impacted the state’s legitimacy during the previous two presidential terms, hereby going beyond the ‘failed state’ debate and putting Max Weber’s theory on the monopoly on violence into perspective (Weber 1978). It argues that organized crime, principally the Mexican drug-trafficking organizations (DTOs), are the main actor challenging the state’s legitimacy and that the two are connected in an uneasy equilibrium that has changed in nature over time. The analysis concludes that there are three principal actors through which the dynamics of violence and state legitimacy interact: the Mexican government, the DTOs and Mexican civil society and that this interplay had led to a capacity, security and legitimacy gap. It further argues that there are different types of legitimacy in Mexico: judicial, economic and social/cultural, meaning that although the Mexican president in theory is the legitimate authority of the country, in practice this is a whole other story.Show less
This study investigates the acquisition of gender agreement between determiner- noun-adjective by Spanish L2 speakers whose L1 is Dutch, and tests the effect of language proficiency by comparing...Show moreThis study investigates the acquisition of gender agreement between determiner- noun-adjective by Spanish L2 speakers whose L1 is Dutch, and tests the effect of language proficiency by comparing beginner- intermediate- advanced Dutch speakers of Spanish. Earlier research on second language acquisition, like research on the Feature Reassembly Hypothesis (Hwang and Lardiere 2013; Lardiere 2009) that states that acquisition of uninterpretable features like grammatical gender pose difficulty, together with the differences between languages when it comes to their gender systems, have led to this study. Both Dutch and Spanish have grammatical gender with a binary system. This system is particularly transparent in Spanish gender, since nouns ending in –o tend to be masculine and nouns ending in –a feminine. Whereas in Dutch the gender system is less transparent, based on common gender (de) or neuter gender (het). Given this background, how is the acquisition of gender agreement between determiner- noun- adjective by Spanish L2 speakers whose L1 is Dutch? Comparing beginner, intermediate and advanced Dutch L2 learners of Spanish, which has been done in earlier investigations on English L2 learners of Spanish (Sagarra and Herschensohn 2011), gives us an insight on the effect of proficiency. I used the Leiden Learner Corpus (LLC), a collection of data from Dutch learners of Romance languages to extract determiner- noun-adjective combinations, produced by Dutch speaking participants who are studying Spanish as their L2 or L3 at Leiden University (n= 27; 10 beginners, 6 intermediate and 11 advanced). An overall better performance on gender agreement by higher proficiency levels was found. The performance on gender agreement between determiner- noun was better than the performance on gender agreement between determiner- noun- adjective. This research creates a new angle on the acquisition of gender agreement between the determiner- noun- adjective structure because it is the first study on a new language pair: Dutch- Spanish.Show less

However the main topic is the Relational Art and the development of a new paradigm which involves a political aim as part of the work of art. O presente trabalho se propõe analisar a função da câmera do vídeo documentário Corumbiara (2009) de Vincent Carelli, e o relacionamento com a formação da imagem indígena, dentro do contexto do...Show moreO presente trabalho se propõe analisar a função da câmera do vídeo documentário Corumbiara (2009) de Vincent Carelli, e o relacionamento com a formação da imagem indígena, dentro do contexto do projeto audiovisual Vídeo nas Aldeias (VNA). No projeto Vídeo nas Aldeias o artefato expõe um papel fundamental enquanto à representação do índio, pois além de entender a câmera como um espelho que reflete o ponto de vista dos nativos, de mesmo modo serve como uma arma política que pretende desconstruir a visão negativa e estereotipada dos indígenas no Brasil. Contudo, em Corumbiara a câmera expõe outros papeis: primeiramente observa-se o artefato como uma arma de documentação e de denúncia, sem embargo a câmera se entende também como uma arma de invasão e de exploração. Enquanto a metodologia desta tese, para analisar a utilidade da câmera se estudaram dois trechos do longa-metragem. Em primeiro lugar se analisará a cena onde o narrador Vincent Carelli e sua equipe depara com os índios Kanoê, e finalmente a cena onde o grupo estabelece contato com a enigmática figura do “índio do buraco”. Enquanto a aproximação deste trabalho do ponto de vista teórico, o cerne da dissertação aponta para o tema da representação do “Outro”, como o sujeito é “tipificado” antes de ser “estereotipado” por outro sujeito (Hall, The Spectacle of the Other, 257). A teoria da representação que alude Stuart Hall em seu livro Representation: Cultural Representations and Signifying Practices (1997) considera-se uns dos fundamentos desta dissertação, visto que sua abordagem multifacetada sobre o tema da identidade e representação facilita o aprofundamento de outras teorias cujo foco é expor a identidade –ou a representação– dos índios. Por outro lado, Robert Stam, revela em seu livro Tropical Multiculturalism (1997) o surgimento da mídia indígena no Brasil, fenômeno que nas últimas décadas tem-se popularizado dentro do âmbito antropológico, mas também cinematográfico.Show less

Pero recordar nuestro pasado no consiste únicamente en una labor archivística que reviste nuestra historia personal, pues más bien se trata de todo un complejo trabajo afectivo. Dependiendo de los fines a la que sea sometida la memoria, puede convertirse en una herramienta discursiva para la historia. El papel del testimonio en esta coyuntura adquiere gran valor pues hace pública una intimidad que en su contexto puede ser crucial para reflexionar la Historia. Con el estudio de la obra Amuleto de Bolaño propongo analizar como se construye una voz memórica en un relato que entreteje hechos históricos, la matanza de Tlatelolco del 1968 en México D.F., con la vida bohemia y errabunda de Auxilio, nuestra protagonista.Show less

Als er echter dieper gegraven wordt, blijkt dat dit gecompliceerder is dan het in eerste instantie lijkt. Dit onderzoek beoordeelt de Braziliaanse homo-emancipatie a.d.h.v. verschillende nationale en internationale vraagstukken met betrekking tot de LGBT-gemeenschap.Show less
