Enkele van dit soort vraagstukken zijn: moeten we onszelf offeren als dit het belang van een groter ecosysteem dient? Wat als het ecosysteem ons ziek maakt? En, wat gebeurt er met onze individualiteit als we zo diep met alles verweven zijn dat we ‘zelf’ niet meer van ‘ander’ kunnen onderscheiden? Begrippen die een centrale rol spelen bij deze kwesties zijn: inherente waarde, permeabiliteit, zelfopoffering, ziekte en vervreemding. Door theorieën rondom deze begrippen in te zetten om mijn studieobjecten te lezen, zal ik kijken hoe mijn studieobjecten een nieuw licht werpen op deze begrippen en zo een genuanceerdere theorie van ecocentrisme kunnen formuleren.Show less

Therefore, literature can be analyzed as a case study in order to identify the tendencies of thought in the...Show moreStudies show that literature is highly affected by the context in which it is written. Therefore, literature can be analyzed as a case study in order to identify the tendencies of thought in the time that a story is written. The purpose of this study was to "analyze" how the scientific discourse in (post)modern detective fiction can be related to the changing scientific and philosophical context of the twentieth century. Through an extensive textual analysis of a detective character’s methodology, a picture could be painted of their scientific beliefs. By going through this process for two detective characters, the Victorian Sherlock Holmes and the postmodern William of Baskerville, a comparison between the two may then reveal how the shifts in the philosophical field of science and theory could have affected their methods of theoretical thought that they utilize to interpret the world and subsequently solve cases. The study showed that Sherlock Holmes never questioned the objective and observable nature of evidence and universal causality, whereas in William of Baskerville’s methodology the elusiveness of any attempt to interpret the world was a major focus. Relating these findings to the philosophical ideas that were most dominant in the beginning and the end of the twentieth century showed that this shift correlates with the manner in which society’s confidence in the objectivity of science and knowledge has diminished.Show less

The purpose of this dissertation is to establish to what extent the wolf and the hunter in Little Red Riding Hood stories have, over time, developed into complex characters that will allow for a...Show moreThe purpose of this dissertation is to establish to what extent the wolf and the hunter in Little Red Riding Hood stories have, over time, developed into complex characters that will allow for a wide variety of masculine role models. To achieve this, four versions of the tale have been analysed and compared: “Le Petit Chaperon Rouge” by Charles Perrault, “Rotkäppchen” by the Brothers Grimm, “The Company of Wolves” by Angela Carter, and Princess of the Silver Woods by Jessica Day George. This dissertation is meant as an addition to the existing feminist discourse on gender and fairy tales and the theoretical framework exists mainly of historical context to Perrault’s version of the story, Judith Butler’s theory of gender as a construct, Alexander Boon’s definition of the hero figure as masculine role model, and Riki Lane’s views on the relation between nature and nurture. Concluded, these male role models have become more complex, but they still offer only a limited array of masculine role models accepted by contemporary mainstream culture. It is important for this to change and more research into this topic is advisable.Show less

The primary motivation for this endeavor is that this field of literature has been woefully underrepresented on the international scene. Despite the fact that there is plenty of information to be found on the coup and the subsequent massacre and its effects on society, the exile literature that arose from it has been all but neglected, even in the field of academic literature.Show less

Hoe is het mogelijk dat twee christelijke schrijvers, Richard Abanes en Connie Neal,...Show moreDeze scriptie bevat een vergelijkend onderzoek naar twee verschillende lezingen van J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter. Hoe is het mogelijk dat twee christelijke schrijvers, Richard Abanes en Connie Neal, twee zodanig van elkaar verschillende lezingen van Rowlings romans hebben opgetekend? Het antwoord op deze vraag vormt zich door middel van een close-reading van enkele passages uit de eerste twee Harry Potter-romans, aan de hand van Mieke Bals narratologietheorie. Op deze manier worden de verschillende keuzes binnen Rowlings narratief en de interpretatie hiervan door Abanes en Neal duidelijk. Door deze te koppelen aan Althussers theorie omtrent ideologie, manifesteert zich de ideologie van beide schrijvers en de invloed hiervan op de interpretaties van Rowlings werk. Zo ontvouwt zich een verklaring voor de onophoudelijke discussie omtrent Harry Potter binnen vele christelijke groeperingen, en in dit geval specifiek voor de totaal verschillende interpretaties van Abanes en Neal. Zoals ook beschreven door Paulus in zijn brief aan de Galaten, motiveert het volgen van de geest van de wet beduidend andere ideologische keuzes dan het volgen van de letter van de wet.Show less
