The research sample consisted of 181 Moroccan-Dutch students, 149 Turkish-Dutch students and 211 native Dutch students in the age of 12 to 18 years. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was used to assess whether the students had emotional problems. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was used to measure self-esteem and the Family Affluence Scale to measure the socio-economic status. The results show that emotional problems are most frequently reported by girls, except for Moroccan-Dutch students in which no difference is found between boys and girls. There was no difference in emotional problem between the younger group (12 to 14 year) and the older group (15 to 18 year). In general, students with low self-esteem seem to experience more emotional problems. Furthermore the results show that there are ethnic differences in the correlation between the socio- economic status and emotional problems. For Turkish-Dutch and native Dutch students the results show that a high socio-economic status correlates with less emotional problems. On the other side the results for Moroccan-Dutch students show that a high socio-economic status correlates with more emotional problems. For follow-up research it’s interesting to examine multiple intrapersonal and environmental factors in relation to emotional problems. This insight will help professionals in adjusting their methods more specifically to risk factors for emotional problems in Moroccan-Dutch, Turkish-Dutch and native Dutch youth.Show less

Since sleep duration has a well-researched relationship with memory types and with chronotype, and chronotype influences sleep patterns and memory consolidation, the question arises if chronotype acts as a moderator in the relationship between sleep duration and short term memory or working memory. Parents of the children were asked to log the sleep duration of the children for an entire week. During this week, the CCTQ, a questionnaire about chronotype was completed. At the end of the week, a student researcher sat down with the participants to complete a version of the digit span subtest, normally used in the WISC-III and a word pairing test. Using ANOVA’s and moderation analysis it was found that chronotype does not moderate the relationship between sleep duration and either short term memory or working memory. In contrast to popular belief, this study showed a negative relationship between sleep duration and both short term and the working memory. Additionally, it was found that children with a more evening focussed chronotype slept the shortest amount of time and scored significantly higher on short term memory tasks. An explanation for these results is given in the final section of the paper. At these ages, sleep is important for predicting learning capabilities, but not predominant at that. Parents could consider these results when contemplating about a sleep schedule fitted to their child’s needs.Show less

The cause of these differences can probably be explained by individual differences in sleep duration and temperament. The moderating effect of temperament on the association between sleep duration and EF and mutual relations have been studied. The sample consisted of 499 ‘normal’ children (228 boys, 271 girls) between 9 to 12 years (M = 10.5; SD = 0.85). Sleep duration is measured by a sleep log, temperament factors Extraversion, Negative Affectivity and Effortful Control by the EATQ-R. EF is divided in working memory (Visual digit span task) and inhibition (PVT Go/No-Go). ANCOVA has showed only an association between shorter sleep duration and less working memory for introvert children and the other way around (F(2, 410) = 5.15, p = .006), but not for neutral extraverted children or high extraverted children. Also other temperament factors did not show moderation effects. Furthermore, shorter sleep was significantly related with less inhibition (r = .12), but with better working memory (r = -.52). Extraverted children differ from introverted children on working memory (F(2, 433) = 3.24, p = .040) and little Effortful Control differs from the average level of Effortful Control (F(2, 436) = 3.55, p = .030). There were no other significant results in this study. This study has shown that school performances are not only influenced by cognitive capacities, but also by sleep and child’s temperament traits.Show less

Show less

Show less
