My primary aim in this investigation is to trace the history of the invention of the Marxist historian’s persona in the Communist Party Historians’ Group, and thereby reveal its specific...Show moreMy primary aim in this investigation is to trace the history of the invention of the Marxist historian’s persona in the Communist Party Historians’ Group, and thereby reveal its specific configuration. This is to be an exercise in the recently emerging research program of what I have termed the empirical philosophy of history, as developed by Herman Paul. I supplemented this framework with certain Bourdieusian insights, adopting analytic tools — concepts like forms of capital and fields — that were specifically constructed to reveal more clearly the social elements and forces at play in the development of the dispositions or embodied commitments to goods that constitute personae. After elaborating my methodological framework, I move to outlining the basic elements that went into the making of the Marxist historian’s persona; the primary commitments to epistemic, moral and political goods that were embodied by the Historians’ Group’s founders — Dona Torr, A. L. Morton, Maurice Dobb and Christopher Hill — who played a primary role in its making. These consisted of the epistemic commitments to obtaining a dialectical and historical view or understanding of history, the moral commitment to the emancipation of the proletariat and the political commitment to Communism of the Soviet variety as espoused by the Communist Party of Great Britain. The obtaining of these commitments required the exercising of the appropriate virtues like employing the dialectical and historical materialist methods, engaging in class analysis and maintaining loyalty to the Communist Party. These virtues in turn implied an opposition to vices that consisted of their lack in other historians’ scholarly personae, pejoratively referred to as ‘bourgeois’. However, there was also a struggle internally regarding the proper interpretation of these commitments and virtues, one that played out both within the Historians’ Group itself and the wider Party. The contours of this struggle and the practices of contestation it involved —abounding in virtue and vice language — is clarified through the prism of dispositional variations that existed among the Group’s members, which I distinguish as the academic and non-academic. However, these are not presented as discreetly definable entities, but rather as consisting of a common network of commonalities (as in a family resemblance concept), thereby allowing for consideration of the variations that existed among members of each, while also allowing for the role of contingency that had a major effect on the making of the Marxist historian’s persona.Show less

Enkele belangrijke gebeurtenissen van het Indonesische onafhankelijkheidsstreven in deze periode zijn de PKI-opstanden van 1926-1927 en de muiterij op de Zeven Provinciën in 1933. It challenges some of the dominant assumptions in current historical scholarship: that the Chechens and Ingush constantly resisted Sovietization and launched a major revolt against Soviet power in response to the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Using a wide variety of sources from the Soviet secret police and the German military intelligence, this study finds that much of the popular resistance in Chechnya and Ingushetia was related to collectivization campaigns; that the core of the Chechen and Ingush armed underground consisted of bandits and refugees who were primarily concerned with personal survival; and that politically motivated rebels among them never managed to trigger a nationwide rebellion during the German–Soviet War. Instead, it is found that the number of Chechens and Ingush who served the Red Army far outnumbered those who sided with the Nazis. The accusations against the Chechens and Ingush were largely fabricated and exaggerated by the Soviet leadership in order to justify wholesale deportation.Show less

Das ist Berlin!’, schreef de Russische schrijver Andrej Bely in 1924 na een verblijf in Berlijn. De Duitse hoofdstad werd in de jaren twintig geassocieerd met een wild en florissant nachtleven, seksuele uitspattingen, drugsgebruik en een decadente kijk op de wereld. Deze excessen werden doorgaans in verband gebracht met het onzekere bestaan in de Weimarrepubliek, die geplaagd werd door politieke crises en hyperinflatie: het zogenoemde ‘tanzen auf dem Vulkan’. Cocaïne was het roesmiddel bij voorkeur van deze vulkaandansers, men sprak destijds zelfs van een Kokainwelle, een cocaïnegolf. Massaal drugsgebruik als deel van een zogenoemde Rauschkultur maakt sindsdien onderdeel uit van het beeld dat van de 'Großstadt' tijdens de Weimarrepubliek bestaat. Maar klopt dat wel? Er is beperkt onderzoek gedaan naar de Kokainwelle. In de bestaande literatuur over het onderwerp is er weinig aandacht voor de gestalte die het cocaïnegebruik in deze periode aannam, de beeldvorming van het gebruik, structurele of incidentele oorzaken en de rol van de overheid. Het is, kortom, een onderwerp dat zelden in al haar facetten wordt beschouwd. In deze masterscriptie wordt het beeld van de Kokainwelle nader onderzocht en binnen haar historische context geplaatst. Hierbij komt de ontwikkeling van de Duitse cocaïne-industrie aan bod, de opkomst van cocaïne als medicijn en het gebruik van de drug tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De beeldvorming van het cocaïnegebruik in Berlijn tijdens de Weimarrepubliek wordt geanalyseerd aan de hand van een rijk exposé aan literatuur en kunst, met speciale aandacht voor de expressionistische dichter Walter Rheiner (1895-1925) en de danseres Anita Berber (1899-1928). Tot slot wordt de wetgeving aangaande cocaïne onder de loep genomen en dieper ingegaan op de handhaving daarvan in de Weimarrepubliek.Show less

Tijdens een langdurig proces debatteerde het EP zeven keer over het Statuut van de Leden dat dit moest regelen. Dit onderzoek brengt in kaart wat er in de de bijdragen aan deze debatten gesteld werd over de noodzaak van een Statuut voor de status van het EP en de beeldvorming onder de bevolking en welke concrete regelingen en bezoldiging hierin opgenomen zouden moeten worden. Uit de rechtvaardigingen die de Europarlementariërs aanvoeren voor de voorgestelde regelingen, valt af te leiden wat de Europarlementariërs in deze periode vinden dat het EP is of zou moeten zijn en wie het bijvoorbeeld vertegenwoordigt. Op deze manier wordt getracht dit politieke debat te verbinden met academische debatten over democratie in de EU en het vermeende gebrek daaraan.Show less

From their inception in...Show moreThe Scottish National Liberation Army was, and still is, a very small violent Scottish nationalist movement with the aim of establishing an independent Scottish Republic. From their inception in 1980 they knew how to make the headlines of the newspapers through an insistent campaign of letter bombs to important figures like Lady Diana, Margaret Thatcher and even the queen. They planned bomb hoaxes and were even responsible for some actual bombings. Somehow they were, however, never really (visibly) taken seriously by the media or the authorities. And that might just be one of the reasons why they did not become a large terrorist movement. The aim of this study is to contribute to wider terrorism research by looking at the factors that kept the SNLA from becoming a large terrorist movement. By figuring out what kept the SNLA from becoming the Scottish equivalent of, for example, the IRA we might be able to recreate these conditions and policies in our societies today and reduce the number of people joining such a movement resulting in the gradual decline of terrorist movements. Beatrice de Graaf’s theory on performative power proved to be of crucial importance to answer the research question of this paper: Why did the Scottish National Liberation Army not become a large terrorist movement during the years 1979-1997? By building on a firm theoretical framework of new and proven terrorism research and investigating newspaper articles and parliamentary debates from that period for anything relating to the SNLA this study has come to the conclusion that one of the major factors that contributed to the SNLA remaining a small and obscure movement was (1) the low performative power of the British Government. By publically ignoring the SNLA and letting the infiltration be done by local authorities and intelligence agencies thus not involving the public in the terrorism discourse, the British government minimised the performative power and thus the influence of the movement. Other factors were; (2) the way the media reported the actions of the SNLA, which was usually with disdain; (3) errors from within the SNLA itself, like failed attacks or other actions and; (4) there were other alternatives for the SNLA, movements like the trade union or political parties which were more successful at achieving the same goals as the SNLA but through legal means. On this basis it is recommended for future counterterrorism policies to keep the performative power of the government as low as possible and to keep an open dialogue with and invest in the alienated and marginalised groups of society. Providing them with other alternatives for terrorism.Show less

Similarly, they have...Show moreSomalia and (South) Sudan belong to the most troubled countries in the world. All three of them are classified within the bottom 20% of the UNDP’s Human Development Index. Similarly, they have consistently been ranked in the top-5 of the Fragile States Index. Unsurprisingly, the contemporary history of Somalia and Sudan is characterized by chronic insecurity because of recurring civil wars between ethnic, tribal or clan-based groups and their governments. Therefore, the vast majority of international involvement in the Horn of Africa during the last twenty years has been directed at these countries. However, despite this ample attention, the deployed international military forces have thus far been unable to re-establish secure environments and rebuild state structures. Focusing on five distinct military interventions from 1990 to roughly 2010, this inquiry aims to measure the qualitative and quantitative contributions of Security Sector/System Reform (SSR) to the restoration of the state’s monopoly on the legitimate use of force. To this end, it addresses e.g. the progress made within Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programs. This inquiry then attempts to assess the legitimacy of the post-conflict state reconstruction effort by looking at e.g. the empowerment of civil society representatives and the progress made within community confidence-building measures. In doing so, this inquiry adopts Paul D. Miller’s concept of ‘armed state building’ as a theoretical framework. It therewith argues that – despite a growing number of criticisms – liberal institution-building has since the end of the Cold War remained the prevailing paradigm of state reconstruction efforts. Based on a reading of relevant literature, this inquiry contends that group identities in Somalia and Sudan have become interwoven with relative deprivation between them. The result have been enduring crises of citizenship and legitimacy in the state which continue to feed narratives that help to mobilize groups for violence. This inquiry finds that SSR has managed to increase the capacities of security and justice institutions, albeit in a vacuum. Analyses indicate how the (re)-established state institutions overall have been rather a-contextual, a-historic and frequently paralleled more capable, indigenous mechanisms. Simultaneously, the problems within the state’s legitimacy domain illustrate the complex environments, wherein international military forces e.g. were hampered by their cooperation with problematic local partners. This points to limitations within the military spheres of influence that affect soldiers’ ability to address the ‘root causes’ of conflict. This, in turn, leads to questions of how SSR should otherwise be treated within their activities, and how these armed state building efforts could best be complemented.Show less

This raises questions about how this area of tension between...Show moreThe French Senate is nowadays often presented by its critics as an institution that is conflicting with the principles of democracy. This raises questions about how this area of tension between democracy and the second chamber has emerged and evolved throughout the history of the French political system. Bicameralism seems contradictory to the French political culture because the republican doctrine strongly believed in a single assembly. This research focuses on the first half of the French Third Republic (1870-1914) and investigates to what extend the Senate was considered to be compatible with democracy. How was it possible that a Senate -an institution that seemed to have lost its place in the French political landscape and was associated with aristocracy and conservative liberalism- obtained a place in the institutional framework of this republic which was so democratic for its time? In general, historians have shown little interest in upper houses. However, this thesis argues that in order to get a complete picture of the reasons behind the evolution of democratic institutions it is not enough to merely study political theory or constitutional law; one should also look at the reality of political practice. In order to understand how important historical events and national context in France were in shaping the debate about the relation between the Senate and democracy, the French case is put in an international comparative perspective with the discussions that took place around the same period in Belgium and The Netherlands. This research demonstrates that the French Senate of the Third Republic was not constructed against democracy, or simply as the representation of conservative forces. It rather was a very inventive chamber that served the interest of the Republican Party, promoted democracy and played an important role in the political education of the French countryside and its integration into the French nation. Secondly, it is argued that discussions about the legitimacy of the French upper house were to a very large extend determined by historical circumstances -such as the Boulanger crisis and the Dreyfus affair-, political opportunism, pragmatism, and specificities in the national political culture.Show less

De verdieping en uitbreiding van het Europese project kon in de beginfase op veel sympathie rekenen van het Nederlandse Parlement, maar ziet tegenwoordig een steeds diverser verzet. Door middel van een chronologische analyse van de parlementaire Handelingen wordt in deze thesis gepoogd de redenen achter deze verandering te doorgronden. Naast de verandering van het Europese project zelf, waren ook de kleine eurokritische partijen en de gekozen strategieën van de elite-partijen debet aan de verandering van het verzet.Show less

Deze scriptie gaat over ideeën en sociale verhoudingen en over de wisselwerking daartussen. De redactie van De Socialistische Gids is bestudeerd aan de hand van het zelfbedachte concept intellectuele performance met als doel om in kaart te brengen wat wetenschap voor verschillende leden van de sociaaldemocratische partij betekende. Eind december 1915 werd De Socialistische Gids als ‘nieuwjaarsgeschenk’ verwelkomd in de partij. Het was een ‘teeken, dat de energie bij ons niet is gedood; dat wij nog vertrouwen in de toekomst hebben; dat wij rustig voortwerken aan onze ontwikkeling’, schreef de partijkrant Het Volk. Kennelijk waren de verwachtingen van de wetenschap hooggespannen. In deze scriptie zijn deze verwachtingen in kaart gebracht. Daarbij was de vraag leidend wat intellectuelen en wetenschappers verwachtten van wetenschap en het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift voor zichzelf en voor de SDAP en wat de partijtop verwachtte van de wetenschapsbeoefening in de partij. Voor de redactie-secretaris en criminoloog Willem Bonger (1876-1940) gold de praktische wetenschap als de motor van de sociale vooruitgang. Hij wilde wetenschappen zoals natuurkunde, wiskunde, biologie en psychologie beoefenen in de SDAP met als doel om de socialistische maatschappij te maken. Zowel zijn politieke als academische werk getuigt van een sterk geloof in de maakbaarheid van de maatschappij. Deze maakbaarheidsgedachte zou een generatie jongere partij-intellectuelen beïnvloeden en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog doorwerken in de Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA). Binnen de redactie riep Bongers ambitie om de socialistische maatschappij letterlijk te maken met behulp van wetenschap echter de nodige weerstand op. Redactielid en partijleider Pieter Jelles Troelstra (1860-1930) vond wetenschapsbeoefening in de partij om heel andere redenen belangrijk. Hij gebruikte wetenschap als troef die op politiek opportune momenten gespeeld kon worden ten bate van zijn machtspositie. Socioloog Rudolf Kuyper (1874-1934) zag wetenschapsbeoefening als manier om een verstarring van het geestesleven van de partij te voorkomen. Hij zag De Socialistische Gids als ideologisch vernieuwingsinstrument. Deze verschillende opvattingen van wat wetenschap betekende voor de SDAP vormden het praktische redactiewerk. Uit deze scriptie blijkt dat politieke intellectuelen en wetenschappers meer waren dan opperpriesters van Marx. Zij vormden de voorhoede van het socialisme en droegen op fundamentele wijze bij aan de ontwikkeling van het socialisme. Als belangrijkste conclusie van deze scriptie is vastgesteld dat de betekenis van wetenschap veranderde in de SDAP in de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw. Wetenschap werd beoefend met het doel om in de maatschappij in te grijpen. Wetenschap werd praktischer en pragmatischer ingezet dan voorheen. De Socialistische Gids laat de geboorte van het maakbaarheidsdenken en de technocratie zien. Het maakbaarheidsdenken van Bonger vormt een brug tussen het vroege marxisme van de SDAP en de naoorlogse sociaaldemocratische politiek.Show less

De terreinen wetgeving, politiek, maatschappij en media kwamen daarbij aan bod. Aan hand van de analyse werd in het laatste hoofdstuk vastgesteld wat er ondernomen werd tegen deze extreemrechtse stroming en in hoeverre dit succesvol bleek te zijn. Met succesvol wordt in deze context het terugdringen van het aantal neonazi's en diens misdaden bedoeld.Show less

Dit onderzoek verlegt de aandacht naar de journalistiek, naar de media. Hadden de media invloed op dit debat? En zo ja, welke? Dat zijn de hoofdvragen in dit onderzoek dat zich baseert op een analyse van krantenartikelen tussen 1991 en 2001. In 1991 verschenen de eerste krantenartikelen met kritiek op het rechtsherstel en in 2001 werd de discussie daarover gesloten door de uitkeringen van de Nederlandse overheid aan de vervolgingsslachtoffers van de Holocaust. Voorafgaand aan deze krantenanalyse volgt een historiografische analyse van de literatuur over het Nederlandse rechtsherstel ten behoeve van de Joodse slachtoffers. Daarin wordt kritisch gekeken naar de bestaande literatuur, naar wat er in die literatuur wordt uitgelicht, en de stiltes in die literatuur. Op deze manier worden ook de verscheidene standpunten die de overheid, de wetenschap en de Joodse gemeenschap hebben ingenomen in deze periode geïnventariseerd. Daarna volgt een historische analyse van de media, waarin 1997 een keerpunt blijkt. Dit is het moment waarop de discussie over het rechtsherstel in de kranten oplaait. Dit onderzoek laat zien waarom.Show less
