This thesis shows that the United States used its influence to deter France and Britain from encroaching upon Liberian territory during the latter half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and that increased British and French aggression during the Scramble forced the US to abandon its traditional policy of diplomatic intervention and resort to unprecedented measures that potentially neglected the Monroe doctrine and reinforced a suzerainty-like relationship between the US and Liberia.Show less

It highlights the importance of Massive Resistance as a defining moment in the South's shift from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. It delves into the backlash against the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision and argues that the 1950s and 1960s are a defining era of political realignment in American political history.Show less

Harrold Carswell, Robert Bork and a changing image of the Supreme Court and its judges has been studied. Different factors such as a changing nomination procedure, a strong increase of political and media involvement in the most recent rejections and the changed public image of the Supreme Court and its judges in the American society show that there is a connection between the most recent failed nominations and a changed image of the Supreme Court and its judges. The rejections in particular show that political and public involvement in the nominations caused a decrease of the “neutral” and “mythical” image of the court and its judges, which lead to a less exclusive and more democratic position among the other politicial institutions.Show less
