To do this, two AIIB projects will be investigated as well as two Asian Development Bank (ADB) projects, as case studies. These will be analyzed and compared, alongside the two banks general environmental policies. To examine these cases, two different perspectives on sustainability will be discussed. Furthermore, three concepts (the management of organizations in regard to cooperation with partners, long-term thinking, and transparency) will be researched in relation to sustainability. Those three concepts will be used to discuss the case studies. To conclude, it can be stated that the AIIB is taking steps towards sustainability, because it promotes cooperation with partners, long-term thinking and transparency. But, the AIIB’s approach to sustainability is comparable to the ADB’s.Show less

To understand the significance of this initiative, the topic of the AIIB will be analysed through the lens of international socialisation theory. This thesis finds that even though, China has managed to shape the AIIB in accordance with its own interests and preferences, still, in many aspects, the bank adheres to Western norms and values. In addition to this, the reforms accelerated by the establishment of the AIIB are rather limited. Clearly China is experiencing a structural power deficit, yet the establishment of the AIIB may positively influence China’s national image abroad and thus, lay a foundation for China’s future grand aspirations.Show less
