Show less

This is a research on how Tvardovsky, who had loyally supported Stalin during his regime but later became an important actor in the destalinization, was able to come to terms with having supported Stalin’s system of terror. By analysing primary sources like his Working Notebooks, autobiographical poems and his brother’s autobiography, and by analysing his documented behaviour both during Stalin’s regime and after, this thesis will portray how Tvardovsky dealt with the aftermath of Stalin’s terror. In doing so, this research will make use of Hellbeck’s theory regarding writers’ loyalty to the regime despite state violence and the theory of the heroisation-demonisation phenomenon in mass dictatorships. This thesis aims to shed more light on how Soviet citizens adjusted during the Thaw.Show less

Much has been written on NATO’s actions and decisions towards Afghanistan, but no specific research is available on de Hoop Scheffer’s leadership during the decisive period for NATO in Afghanistan, since command of the mission was turned over indefinitely to NATO on August 11, 2003. The same can be said for Rasmussen’s leadership during ISAF and NATO’s operation in Libya. The research question is: To what extent do NATO’s secretaries general shape alliance policy on crisis situations? This research question is answered through a case study research method on both de Hoop Scheffer’s and Rasmussen’s role in shaping NATO policy on two major crises situations during their term in office: Afghanistan and Libya. Both case studies consist of an analysis in three categories: systematic, organizational and personality factors.Show less

The present study describes two 9-years-old identical twins who experience severe difficulties with counting, comparing quantities and arithmetic. Test results showed that they had severe dyscalculia and that at least N probably suffers from the Gerstmann syndrome. The twins were given an intensive intervention to remediate their numerical problems. During 3 months, they played the Linear number board game and the Number Race twice a week during 15-20 minutes. Results showed little progress in the games for J, but almost no progress for N. No improvement was made on tasks concerning magnitude comparison, dots estimation, addition, subtraction, and number line estimation. The persistent number sense problem presumes brain damage. Possible candidates for brain lesions are the horizontal segment of the intraparietal sulcus (HIPS), the posterior superior parietal lobule (PSPL), or a small region of subcortical parietal white matter where fiber bundles related to symptoms of Gerstmann’s syndrome come together. Future research should indicate the exact location.Show less
