However, during the second part of this period, certain signs of social inequality are traced in the archaeological record (Knapp 2013, p. 241-244; Peltenburg 2013; Steel 2004, p. 93). Following this “rise of individual status” there is an informational/occupational hiatus, detected at the site of Kissonerga-Mosphilia and probably also at Lemba-Lakkous, and it is dated at the transitional period between the Middle and Late Chalcolithic periods (Knapp, 2013, p. 246; Peltenburg, 1993, p. 15; Steel, 2004, p. 106). Concerning Pottery production, the production of the once ubiquitous Red-on-White vessels gradually receded, while there was a simultaneous rise in the production of Red Monochrome Pottery (Bolger, 2007, p. 173; Knapp, 2013, p. 229). Finally, following this transitional period was, as Peltenburg interpreted, a time of social equality reconstitution within the Late Chalcolithic societies (Peltenburg, 1998, p. 252). Chlorakas-Palloures, in the Paphos region, southwest of Cyprus, is one of the very few archaeological sites that possess safely stratified material remains from the transitional stage between the Middle and the Late Chalcolithic periods (Bolger et al., 2004, p. 112; Düring et al., 2021, p. 681). Therefore, an analysis of its Pottery assemblage might shed more light into the knowledge gap of this period. In the present pilot study, I analyze 32 thin sections, sampled from ceramic vessels which appertain to the Red-on-White, Red Monochrome Painted and Plain White Chalcolithic Pottery categories, coming from Chlorakas-Palloures. As means to their analysis, I implement the method of Thin-section Ceramic Petrography and my main research question is: “What can a petrographic analysis show about the technological evolution and variability of production of Red Monochrome, Red-on-White and Plain White Chalcolithic Pottery, at the site of Chlorakas-Palloures?”. My goal is to describe the chaȋne operatoire of each Pottery ware under study, in order to contribute any possible information regarding the steps of their technological production and their technological evolution. Finally, I intend to evaluate whether there was any type of specialization in ceramic production, such as the ones of the possible pendant-maker workshop at Kissonerga-Mosphilia and the conspicuously luxurious production of pendants and figurines at Laona (Knapp, 2013, 209, 239; Steel, 2004, p. 89).Show less

In this research project, several key sites of the Chalcolithic are under investigation, including Lemba-Lakkous, Kissonerga-Mylouthkia, Kissonerga-Mosphilia and Chlorakas-Palloures. The data provided by the excavations at Chlorakas-Palloures have not been incorporated in any research until now. Although the Chalcolithic period has been extensively studied and the excavated sites have been recorded in great detail, little attention is given to the architectural features, and only the “special” structures are examined in great detail. It has been argued that Chalcolithic houses, their spatial configuration and internal activity zones are highly standardized. Also, a marked differentiation can be recognized in both house sizes and building elaboration. However, the Chalcolithic house is always presented as a homogenous structure, with little regard for differentiation or diversity in these structures. This model relies heavily on several parade ground examples, such as the ‘Red Building’ and the Kissonerga ‘Building Model’ and buildings that do not fit in this model, have not been considered. The emergence of building differentiation has first been identified during the Middle Chalcolithic, and it has been argued that this variability resulted from ritual control. For the Late Chalcolithic, the evidence for building differentiation is illustrated by the ‘Pithos House’ of which it has been argued that the differentiation is a result of socio-economic organisation. Interestingly, these buildings are all conform to the internal arrangements of the standard Chalcolithic house. Thus, for both periods building differentiation has been explained to be associated to social competition. In order to scrutinize this hypothesis, the concept of house societies has been applied, in which mainly has been focussed on the buildings and the features therein. Whether settlements are hierarchically arranged can be inferred though house size, building elaboration, differences in food items, access to craft-produced items and burial practices. Therefore, it should be investigated whether we can recognize a difference in activities, building size and building elaboration, in order to identify these high-status buildings. A large dataset has been created combining all the architectural data of the four sites, in order to systematically study, compare and analyse them together. It has been concluded that a high degree of variability is present among Chalcolithic buildings, which can be both recognized on the site level and between sites. This differentiation is due to differences in function, but several high-status buildings have been identified also. Buildings in which a difference in the internal layout could be recognized did not function as houses but served as storage facilities and communal food processing and preparation buildings. Both curvilinear and rectilinear buildings served as such. Buildings which differed in terms of building size, building elaboration were conform to the standard spatial configuration and served primarily as houses. In these buildings evidence for access to different food items and craft-produced items has been encountered. Therefore, it can be argued that these buildings were high-status buildings.Show less

Is there an added value...Show moreAdvances in digital recording technology make it possible to document three-dimensional data during excavation. Yet this opens up the question: what do we do with this data? Is there an added value to recording 3D data that exceeds traditional 2D drawing approaches? Various 3D GIS workflows have been introduced over the years, yet little research has been done exploring the analytical possibilities of this approach. This thesis presents an effective workflow for creating a vector-based 3D GIS model that is capable of operating in the four subsystems of GIS: data entry, data storage, analysis, and visualization. Three excavation trenches from the Chalcolithic site of Chlorakas-Palloures, Cyprus are modeled using TS spatial data and 3D photogrammetry models. Moreover, three methods are introduced for modeling the volume of stratigraphic units using the capabilities of Esri ArcScene. This approach presents a significant advantage over 2D plan and section drawings in regards to stratigraphic analysis. The excavation database can be joined within the 3D GIS environment and easily queried, thus creating a complete 3D spatial database of all excavated materials. Using this method, it is possible to find spatial correlations between units in trenches that may have been excavated at different times. Furthermore, unit relations identified in the field can be visualized and verified in an intuitive, user-friendly interface. Along with being able to depict features and materials found within the interior of the trench, models can be cross-sectioned at any angle and in any direction to show the stratigraphic sequence. This is particularly helpful in aiding in the stratigraphic studies of Chalcolithic sites in Cyprus which have characteristically shallow occupation layers and are subject to extensive post-depositional processes. Stratigraphic analysis of the modeled trenches provides evidence of multiple occupation phases at the site, thus supporting the idea of dynamic settlement patterns during the Late Chalcolithic period in Cyprus. However, the ability to create a 3D GIS model is predicated on the quality and type of data recorded in the field. Volumetric modeling methods showed promise for depicting certain types of features, yet these must be improved in order to accurately represent the volume of all excavated units. An ideal documentation method is introduced that addresses these deficiencies and presents a means of capturing the volumetric data needed for creating a true 3D GIS model for stratigraphic analysis.Show less
