Omdat Bicker zelf vond dat ze niet zo goed schreef, én omdat ze altijd werd vergeleken met de weduwe van Johans broer Cornelis, werd aangenomen dat ze Johan weinig anders te bieden had dan nieuwe politieke connecties (en een grote bruidschat). Immigrants constituted a large segment of the urban population: in Amsterdam around 1650 circa forty percent of the resident population was born abroad. Thousands of these immigrants got married in Amsterdam and had children. The lives of these children, but also of the (great)grandchildren, had not been studied until now. Profiting from recent advancements in the digitisation and indexation of the parish registers and the notarial archives of Amsterdam, this thesis analyses the processes of integration, assimilation and social mobility of nine families with a Norwegian or Danish migration background between 1660 and 1811. What was their process of integration like, and to what extent did they experience social mobility?Show less

This thesis discusses the origin of the 'books of secrets', their presence in Europe and in the Northern Netherlands specifically. These books, most popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, contain many recipes. Some are leaning more towards early-modern science, while others are clearly connected to magic. The books of secrets that were present in the Netherlands are both translations of works written elsewhere, as works created by Dutch authors.Show less

(Entities in) The Hague nominally held the political and geographical prerogative to diplomatic relations in the Dutch Republic, but Amsterdam was a significant challenger to this position due to its economic and financial agency. Various aspects, such as Amsterdam's interfence with diplomatic policy, its contacts with Dutch envoys abroad and the diplomatic community within Amsterdam itself, are elucidated. In particular, it explores the functionality of lesser envoys, such as consuls and agents, and the way they integrated themselves into urban society.Show less
In this thesis I have researched how different representations of stadtholder William V of Orange were created, developed and used by British newspapers in the context of the British political...Show moreIn this thesis I have researched how different representations of stadtholder William V of Orange were created, developed and used by British newspapers in the context of the British political-ideological debate between 1780 and 1806. My research revealed that there existed for most of the period distinct and opposite images of William V in Great Britain. I have linked these images to the opposing ideologies of the conservatives and opposition or radicals. All exploited the ambiguity of the personality and position of the prince in their debate with each other, by using a positive or negative image of the prince. The Dutch Patriot Revolution, the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, the French Revolution, the war of the First Alliance, the fall of the Republic and consequent flight of the prince to Great-Britain and the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland form the background to which newspapers wrote about William V. My research sheds light on several historiographical debates, for example the periodisation of the emergence and decline of British radicalism, the rhetorical tactics that were used by the different sides, what caused debate on the stadholder, the emergence and effects of loyalism, as well as giving a systematic and thorough overview of the way the British thought about William V for the first time.Show less

The letters give an exceptional insight into the personal lives of men and...Show moreThis edition contains 26 letters from the Doesburg Letter Collection (1777 -1822) focusing on its female correspondents. The letters give an exceptional insight into the personal lives of men and women from all layers of the population in a time in Dutch history that was marked by almost constant war and the subsequent political, social and economic changes that came with these conflicts. Many of the letters are signed by women, which make the letter collection a rare source, since not many writings have been preserved from women living in this period, especially not from the lower class. For this reason, this edition focuses entirely on the female correspondence of the collection. The letters for this edition were chosen based on their geographic variation in order to give a broad picture not only of the lives of women from Doesburg, but from all over the Netherlands in the regarding period. To place the letters into context, this edition includes: an overview of the history of the Netherlands and Doesburg in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, of reading and writing in the Low Countries, of the position of women in the Netherlands, and provides a sketch of the Dutch postal system between 1777-1822.Show less
