The privacy paradox brings an interesting phenomenon into these decisions. This concept describes the discrepancy between people’s attitude and behaviour towards privacy. Following one of the explanatory models of the privacy paradox, this quantitative thesis investigates the role of privacy awareness on privacy encroaching policies. It does so by an experimental research design consisting of a survey, which resulted in a sample of 69 participants. Results of this study show that, although a negative relationship between the two variables exist, this relationship cannot be concluded with certainty as the results prove not statistically significant. Therefore, this thesis aligns with the argument of the ongoing debate on privacy awareness that states that privacy awareness does not have a significant influence on support for privacy encroaching policies. Concluding, this thesis emphasizes the need for reassessment of the factor privacy awareness in other conditions, as well as the continuation of research of other explanatory factors.Show less

Recently near-unity single photon purity and near-unity indistinguishability have been shown in resonantly pumped quantum dots embedded in an optical cavity. In this thesis we provide a theoretical framework and experimental results on polarization non-degenerate self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots inside a polarization non-degenerate cavity, and show that by filtering the polarization the brightness of the single photon source can be enhanced. We furthermore describe the resulting output light analytically as a mixture of single photons and coherent light and derive a simple expression for the purity of the single photon source. Lastly we present pulsed measurements of this quantum dot-cavity system, and show that the purity of the single photon source is 98%.Show less

Therefore the impact aphasia has on people is even bigger than possibly imagined. Many different treatments, such as melodic, tone and visual techniques, have been investigated thourougly so far. A treatment focussing on the olfactory system on the other hand has not been investigated as much. One of the reasons the olfactory system would be interesting to investigate in relation to the recovery from aphasia is that odors activate memories; when we smell a scent, it reminds us of something, someone or somewhere, and we are able to give words to the scent. This made me curious whether there is indeed a link, direct or indirect, between the olfactory system and the linguistic system. This bachelors’ thesis will investigate whether odor stimulation/training may facilitate correct naming of aphasic patients. The thesis will be theoretically oriented.Show less

Furthermore, the use of online technologies allows British citizens to communicate faster, easier and more conveniently than ever before with, with social networking sites allowing real-time interaction overcoming geographical and time constraints. There is limited research looking at the use of online communication by Member of Parliaments (MP) in their constituency role, which is surprising as the constituency responsibility of an MP has become of increasing importance in the last 50 years due social and political changes including heightened demands from citizens. Using an original field experiment, this thesis tests which method of communication is the most effective for constituents to use when contacting their local MP, with specific interest in their adoption and use of the social networking site Twitter. The research finds that the majority of MPs have a Twitter account; however theses Members tend to be young, on the left of the political spectrum and reside in marginal constituencies. Members do not appear to be using Twitter to correspond with constituents, although it is the fastest of the tools tested. Email had both the highest response rate and is most likely to provide the constituent with the information they requested, and is therefore the most effective medium for MP-constituent communication.Show less
