Then, followed by a comprehensive conceptualization of Chinese capital outflow in different forms of financial, human, and intellectual capital in Global China, situating the capital outflow as an internal part of the international world economy. Building on this conceptual framework through valence framing the concept of Global China in Dutch news reports will be examined. This study aims to see the different forms and aspects of Global China in Dutch media presented in a negative or positive framing creating an underlying narrative. The dataset of this study is 29 digital news reports chosen from Dutch media organizations' NOS and NRC covering the concept. The dataset is explored through the methodology of the three stages of critical discourse analysis, looking at textual, discursive, and contextual elements of Global China in valence-framed Dutch news reports. I argue throughout my examination that, although Global China as a concept is present in different forms and aspects in Dutch media, the concept is highly politicized when it is framed negatively.Show less

This thesis focuses on the Central Park Five and how the New York Times and the Washington Post described and presented the boys in the media storm. In what way did the New York Times and the Washington Post frame the Central Park Five around the trial, meaning before, during, and after the exoneration in 2002 and the settlement with the city of New York in 2014? Previous research concerning this case study has primarily focused on details of the case and other aspects. This research uses framing theory and the White Racial Frame to show patterns of racial frames in the two newspapers. The research shows that while the racial narratives were prevalent around the trial, they became less visible after decades had passed. This thesis demonstrates that how the boys were depicted was highly influenced by their time. With the years going by, the frame changed as well. In the end, the men were viewed positively instead of demonized.Show less

The narrative adopted by the CJM exploits topics that are considered divisive amongst the public like terrorism, security, immigration, and the position of Muslim citizens to help affirm their relevancy. Additionally, the CJM engages in normalizing their rhetoric so as to lose the general reputation of being extremist and racist, and thus gain more widespread support. This topic was chosen considering the position of social media and its increasing influence in social movements (SMs) and the current societal and political relevance of the CJM. To understand the counter-jihad discourse, framing theory will be employed —namely the three core framing tasks, diagnostic, prognostic, and motivational framing.Show less

The legacy that the JOC has composed surrounding the reconstruction and recovery of Fukushima is in conflict with the views of Japanese anti-Olympic organizations. Through Erving Goffman’s 1974’s Framing Theory, “Reconstruction Olympics” seem to fit the concept of fabrication. The observations and experiences regarding the recovery of Fukushima by evacuees do not align with the fabricated framework by the JOC and the Japanese government, resulting in resistance to the Olympic Games by protest groups. The framing of the Games has played a fundamental role in the formation of its official narrative. Three groups Hangorin no Kai, Okotowari Link and Friends of the Earth Japan will be analyzed through their blog posts, which together seem to be in agreement on the topic of Fukushima’s recovery. Their discourse presents a clear counter-narrative to the discourse presented by the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Reconstruction in the narrative of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games should show results, however, due to fabrication the state of Fukushima is discredited by the JOC and the Japanese government.Show less

It is widely accepted that the misogynistic killings started in 1993, one year before the North American Free Trade Agreement entered into force, but still no consensus on the number of victims is reached and many cases remain unsolved. This thesis examines the role of grassroots activism in pressuring the Mexican government to take responsibility, recognize the crimes, and implement solutions to the feminicides occurring in the Mexican border town Ciudad Juárez. An understanding of the causes and contributing factors is crucial to determine the role and responsibility of the government. By applying social movement theory and framing theory to the social movement Ni Una Más and various small-scale grassroots organizations, the effects of grassroots activism on the government’s attitude and policies regarding feminicide and gender-based violence have been investigated in this thesis. Even though feminicides are still regularly occurring nowadays, and the Mexican authorities thus ultimately failed to eradicate the problem, social movements and grassroots activism have proven to play a decisive role in raising national and international awareness, pressuring the government to take effective measures to solve the problem, and striving for justice and security for the women of Ciudad Juárez.Show less
