Although people tend towards identifying themselves as something absolute, identity does not coincide with itself. This leaves people's sense of identity open to manipulation and exploitation. In this thesis, I explore how Catherine Lacey's novel Pew and Toby Fox's video game Undertale deal with this problem. Both works trouble the notion of a stable, internal identity that can be expressed through clean-cut identity categorisations, showing how such a view of identity is unrealistic, restrictive, and potentially harmful. I draw inspiration from Michel Foucault's treatment of art in his Order of Things, in which Foucault gives art the privileged position of being able to foretell a shift in epistemes. Analysing Pew and Undertale alongside the concept of genre as theorised by Jacques Derrida and the concept of the monster as grounded in Jeffrey Jerome Cohen's writing, I show that these works prefigure an episteme that expects difference rather than sameness, reconfiguring the problem of identity into a source of possibilities.Show less

De genre conventies van de Battle Royale worden besproken, als ook de rol van een centrale protagonist en de manier waarop er verwachtingen worden geschept bij het publiek. To accomplish this, the information on a single event was compared using several different VOC genres that played a key role in transferring the news from Japan via Batavia to the Dutch Republic. It led to a surprising result. Rather than undergoing significant changes, the contents initially recorded by servants remained consistent when copied into new VOC genre documents.Show less

Mensen die naar muziek luisteren, krijgen hierdoor ook veel van deze...Show moreIn de loop der jaren is er een groot aantal muziekgenres ontstaan, bestaande uit liedjes die vaak gepaard gaan met songteksten. Mensen die naar muziek luisteren, krijgen hierdoor ook veel van deze songteksten te horen. Vooral in het popgenre bestaan veel liedjes die dagelijks te horen zijn op de radio, in winkels en op festivals, waardoor een grote hoeveelheid mensen wordt blootgesteld aan de ‘communicatieve’ impact van de songteksten. Er bestaan echter ook andere muziekgenres waar veel naar geluisterd wordt en waar mensen de teksten van te horen krijgen. Dit BA-eindwerkstuk kijkt in hoeverre de invloed van de muziekgenres pop, metal, hip-hop en country gereflecteerd is in de stijl van de songteksten van deze muziekgenres. Om de stijlen van de songteksten te analyseren en met elkaar te vergelijken, wordt er gebruik gemaakt van de registeranalyse van Biber en Conrad (2019). In de registeranalyse wordt er gekeken naar de (kenmerkende) register- en genrekenmerken van de songteksten van de verschillende genres, om te zien of er bij de songteksten van de verschillende muziekgenres ook sprake is van een eigen register. Er wordt gekeken naar de woordenschat door middel van lexicale diversiteit (Type-Token-Ratio, MLTD, en Yule’s K) en een keyword analysis. Ook wordt er gekeken naar andere lexicale kenmerken zoals scheldwoorden en verwijzingen naar de eerste persoon enkelvoud en naar overige aspecten zoals non-lexicale woorden en songtekststructuren (bijvoorbeeld: verse-chorus of verse-chorus-bridge). De analyse wordt uitgevoerd op een corpus van 46.777 woorden bestaande uit songteksten van de volgens Spotify 30 bekendste artiesten en bands van de vier muziekgenres pop, metal, hip-hop en country. De resultaten tonen aan dat er interessante verschillen optreden tussen de songteksten van de verschillende muziekgenres. Alle muziekgenres hebben eigen keywords, die aansluiten op de algemene thema’s van de muziekgenres, de lexicale diversiteit is het hoogst voor het hip-hopgenre en het laagst voor het popgenre. Ook is het aantal scheldwoorden en non-lexicale woorden het meest typerend voor het hip-hopgenre, het popgenre heeft de meeste verwijzingen naar de eerste persoon enkelvoud en het pop-, metal- en hip-hopgenre hebben ook elk een eigen voorkeur voor songtekststructuren. Deze verschillen tonen aan dat er reden is om te geloven dat er voor elk van deze muziekgenres sprake is van een eigen songtekstregister.Show less

However, the genre conventions...Show moreKorean society has made great strides forward in gender representation in the last decade, yet mainstream media often encourages stereotypes and binary gender roles. However, the genre conventions of historical fusion and fantasy combine elements of imagination and otherness that can engage in discussion on gender and represent gender in an alternative, more open, way. It addresses a contemporary issue yet is not bounded by the restrictions of today’s society. To analyze the potential positive representation of the genres, this thesis analyzes the Korean historical fantasy fusion drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (hereafter Moon Lovers) (2016). In order to study the alternative representations within mainstream media, this thesis looks at how the series’ representation of gender is in line with gender normativity. The leading research question is: Does Moon Lovers break gender normativity? The study was conducted through film analysis and guided by gender theory. In conclusion, Moon Lovers does not break with gender normativity. However, the potential of the genres to represent gender in an alternative way still require further study.Show less

De...Show moreHoe beïnvloeden de sociaal culturele context en het genre de representatie van mythische personages? De mythische personages zijn in dit geval Odin, Thor en Loki uit de Noordse mythologie. De casussen zijn de Marvel-films(zoals Thor) en de televisie-serie Vikings. Om eerder genoemde vraag te beantwoorden heb ik gekeken naar genre en de sociaal culturele context rondom de casussen. De representaties in de casussen vergelijk ik met de representaties in de Prose en Poetic Edda en uiteindelijk met elkaar. Beide representaties vervullen een wens. De representaties in de Marvel-wereld vervullen de wens voor een personage, waarmee de kijker zich kan identificeren, dat niet tegen wordt gehouden door de wet en zo het kwaad kan bestrijden. Terwijl de representaties in Vikings een informatieve rol hebben, namelijk hoe de goden in de tijd van de Vikingen werden ervaren door de maatschappij.Show less

In the thesis I will compare The Stand with other works of the morality play genre, such as Everyman and Mundus et Infans. Commonly, this means focussing on a certain genre and its characteristics within the...Show moreThis thesis illuminates the idea of a cross-cultural genre comparison within the field of Literary Studies. Commonly, this means focussing on a certain genre and its characteristics within the literatures of two or more different cultural contexts. However, as an experiment, this thesis assumes the narrative status of literature and contemporary popular culture to be similar. This would mean that it is possible to compare genres cross-culturally within literature and within other types of media. After discussing the field of World Literature and the existence of transcultural narratives, the thesis will move on to a case study between American and Japanese authors. To clarify the potential and usefulness of cross-cultural genre comparisons, three genres will be looked at: gothic, mystery/detective and Lovecraftian weird tale literature. The first two will be explored in short stories by American author Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) and those by three Japanese writers, namely Tanizaki Junichirō 谷崎潤一郎 (1886-1965), Akutagawa Ryūnosuke 芥川龍之介 (1892-1927) and Edogawa Rampo 江戸川乱歩 (1894-1965). The third genre will be used to see how the literary characteristics of weird tales by American author H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) have been used, not only in Japanese literature, but also in Japanese popular culture, like manga and anime. As such, it will eventually show how key conventions within the genres of gothic, mystery/detective and Lovecraftian weird tale literature cannot be explained from within one national or cultural context alone and how cross-cultural and cross-media studies add to the international potential of Literary Studies.Show less
