When Sir Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte d’Arthur in the late fifteenth century, he used various sources of Arthurian sources from English and French medieval literature to create his own literary...Show moreWhen Sir Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte d’Arthur in the late fifteenth century, he used various sources of Arthurian sources from English and French medieval literature to create his own literary masterpiece. His work became one of the most well-known works of Arthurian literature, a high chivalric romance full of courtly love, high moral lessons and honourable knightly values. However, this work also contains unexpected passages of comedy and humour unusual for the genre of medieval chivalric romance. In this thesis, I will be analysing this unconventional aspect of Le Morte d’Arthur to discover what function the comedy serves within this literary work. I will provide a close reading of all relevant passages of the original Middle English Text. Then I will be comparing the original text to two modern translations by Dorsay Armstrong and Keith Baines, to discover how this unique element of comedy is rendered in the modern adaptations.Show less

The purpose is to see what the contemporary linguistic theories give us as information once they have been applied to a novel, more specifically Mort by Terry Pratchett, and whether this information is satisfactory or not. The focus in this thesis will be on finding what makes a text humorous and if the contemporary theories are enough to find an objective source of humour. Eventually it was found that it is possible to find objective sources of humour by means of the SSTH, but that does not entail all the humour that can be found in a novel. In addition there is a suggestion that when analysing a novel, the Theory of Incongruity should encompass a subsection that would allow for a better link whenever the author creates humour by means of writing some grotesque or absurd.Show less

Using three different films as case studies I show that one shouldn't worry about the normalisation through the use of satire but that it serves as a coping mechanism and a tool "work through" the trauma.The increase use of humour, I argue, is a symptom of resistance against the current approach to Holocaust education in Germany and helps challenge certain views of the past.Show less
