Yet this does not always go smoothly and there are several bumps to overcome. For instance, there may be cultural differences between the newcomer and the native society, which can lead to mutual misunderstanding. In addition, municipalities have an important and decisive role in the integration of a newcomer. They make and implement local or national integration policies and thus determine which requirements a newcomer has to meet. Based on the cases of the municipalities of Rotterdam and Vleuten-De Meern, this thesis examines to what extent local integration policies differ from each other and how this difference affects the integration process of newcomers. In other words, does it matter where in the Netherlands a newcomer integrates? The term local turn is important here: how does a local government implement national policy? This study on the integration policies of Rotterdam and Vleuten-De Meern found, based on policy documents, that differences are indeed visible between local policies. Rotterdam has developed its own integration policy due to the size of the municipality and their focus on discrimination and crime. In addition, the tone of their integration policy can be described as negative, mainly caused by the interference of the right-wing party Leefbaar Rotterdam. Vleuten-De Meern, on the other hand, was less susceptible to political discussions, as it was - first unofficially and from 2001 officially - attached to the municipality of Utrecht and followed national integration policy. In addition, the municipality of Vleuten-De Meern was small compared to Rotterdam, making it easier to resolve conflicts internally. It can therefore be argued that integrating in a large, multicultural municipality poses different challenges than integrating in a small municipality.Show less

Each form of integration is defined, as to clarify deliberation on immigrant integration. In order to render general deliberation more profitable, as well as the assessment of government policies on integration, this paper presents an urgent case for the creation of an index which may measure the past, current, and future situations of immigrant integration. All existing indices on integration measure government policies on integration, rather than the actual situation of integration. An estimate of the current situation of immigrant integration and subsequent manner by which to measure the occurrence is undertaken. An analysis of Maghrebian immigrant social integration in France will be utilized as a case study on immigrant integration in western democracies. A defense for the importance of civic and social integration is advanced. The conceptions of integration and prescriptive views that will be made are built upon the adherence to a republican model of democracy, a foundational element of western democracies.Show less

Show less

What is puzzling to academics specialized in European Integration is the stark contrast to the degree of integration into the European Union experienced by Malta and Luxembourg which have both fully integrated into the European community in comparison to these microstates. The resultant regulatory and political discrepancies between each of these microstates is investigated in this paper with an investigation into the possibility of further integration for the unincorporated microstates. The different routes to integration of economic, political, and diplomatic arrangements follow in line with the 2013 Association Framework agreement established by Brussels which this paper will use to conceptualize an analysis into wider microstate integration. This paper assumes that intergovernmental agreements between microstates and their EU member state neighbors reduce the incentives for integration into the European Union. Other assumptions rely on an investigation into the value that European microstates have in maintaining their sovereignty at the expense of gains through European integration. It also investigates economic development of these microstates to their degree of integration as a control variable, of which there is less of an impact than intergovernmental agreements. The findings of this paper highlight the importance that microstates show towards intergovernmental agreements over supranational integration.Show less

Said expansive joint foreign policy has developed in an inhospitable setting where its members hold widely different interests and perspectives on joint foreign policy. Given states’ tendency to jealously guard sovereignty over their foreign policy, how the EU’s foreign policy structures and instruments have been aggregated remains unclear. This paper addresses this via the question “Through what mechanism did the EU aggregate its foreign policy between 2014 and 2021?” and applies a modified ‘Failing Forward’ framework where foreign policy is aggregated via a process of problem-solving by problem-making resulting in an iterative institutionalisation causal mechanism. To analyse whether this mechanism is present, this study adopts a theory-testing process-tracing research method on the development of EU foreign policy structures and instruments from 2014 to 2021. It argues that the aggregation of the EU’s foreign policy relies on iterative intergovernmental and neofunctional processes establishing an integrative causal feedback loop. Examining how the EU aggregates foreign policy is valuable to both EU policymakers and actors within other international organisations seeking greater unison in their foreign policy and contributes to research on international integration in intergovernmental settings.Show less

The three cases are: The Western European Union (WEU), European Defence Agency (EDA) and the European Battlegroups. In this study, more insight is given, using these three cases, why a European strategic autonomous position in defence hasn’t been accomplished yet.Show less

Research on migrants, however, has mostly focussed on either the barriers to integration on the work floor or on the policies of the government, without focus on integration. This thesis links these two important research bodies, by studying immigration policy in relation to integration on the work floor. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and a case study of the recent amendments of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition act, it studies the attention given to the topics of labour, national security and human security. Results show that even though the government its policies play a key role in integration, the act holds little attention to the social aspect of integration. This social aspect consists of preventing discrimination and creating mutual understanding between Japanese citizens and migrants. Analysis shows that even though more labour opportunities to enter Japan were created in the amendments in 2014 and in 2018, migrants taking those opportunities (HSM, Technical Intern Trainees, SSW and health & care workers) still have difficulty integrating in Japan.Show less

Against the background of national integration debates that have defined belonging and integration in the Netherlands in synonymity with being able to culturally assimilate, it is argued that that seeing belonging in terms of cultural assimilation has led to heavy focus on integration criteria like language acquisition, labour market entry, and education as conditions for being able to feel “at home”. As the data collected from semi-structured interviews show and by using Antonsich’ conceptualisation of place-belongingness as a foundation from which the process of belonging is explored, it is emphasised that feeling “at home” is a multidimensional process that stretches between and beyond different locations, with refugees developing different methods to adapt to new environments, circumstances, and communities in order to be able to feel “at home”. Apart from the physical home functioning as a safe and private environment where one can be ‘at ease’ in, the data gathered from the interviews show that experiencing feeling “at home” within the physical home is under constant negotiating with the neighbourhood environment as social connections and encounters in the direct neighbourhood affect feeling “at home” in the physical home itself, showing that the physical home is not merely an impermeable private stronghold but rather a starting point from which other places in the wider neighbourhood environment are explored. In addition to the analysis of this feeling “at home” in the physical home, concrete public places are explored for their unique qualities and provide a person with possibilities to attach to new places when such qualities are recognised. Specifically, places of restoration and places of sociality are claimed to enable belonging by their capabilities to increase self-awareness through active participation. Exploring public spaces like buurthuizen and nursing homes enabled the respondents to be a caregiver instead of a care-receiver, adding an existential dimension to their perception on how belonging is experienced and meaningful place-attachment is effectuated on a local scale.Show less

This is a place where they learn to integrate their emotional side (id/unconsious) with their moral/conscious side (superego/ego/persona). The integration of these elements signifies maturity. The thesis takes Bruno Bettelheim's Freudian analysis of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale 'Brother and Sister' as a 'base structure' and looks at how this structure is applicable to three books from the early twentieth century: Nesbit's "Phoenix and the Carpet", J.M. Barrie's "Peter and Wendy" and Hope Mirrlees's "Lud-in-the-Mist".Show less

Immigrants constituted a large segment of the urban population: in Amsterdam around 1650 circa forty percent of the resident population was born abroad. Thousands of these immigrants got married in Amsterdam and had children. The lives of these children, but also of the (great)grandchildren, had not been studied until now. Profiting from recent advancements in the digitisation and indexation of the parish registers and the notarial archives of Amsterdam, this thesis analyses the processes of integration, assimilation and social mobility of nine families with a Norwegian or Danish migration background between 1660 and 1811. What was their process of integration like, and to what extent did they experience social mobility?Show less

Of those, beneficiaries of international protection have the right to be integrated into Greek society. Therefore, amplifying the efforts regarding refugees being socially included, given a chance to live in a safer and stable environment, and feel incorporated in Greece’s social structure is imperative. This study has an exploratory aim and qualitative research on this topic highlights various theoretical and practical implications of the challenges in the integration process, the uncovering of current gaps, and the levels of cooperation between three substantial actors involved; the Greek state, Greek civil society actors, and the International Organization for Migration.Show less

The research is based on qualitative interviews with twelve Dutch Somalis, seven of which made the journey to the UK and returned to the Netherlands. The interviews focused on the reasons why the "returnees" chose to return to the Netherlands. The participants cited safety reasons as the principal reason for return, alongside the belief in superior living standards in the Netherlands. The participants also expressed that in spite of returning to the Netherlands they did not feel entirely accepted there as a result of the assimilationist model of integration and racial discrimination. This paradoxical conclusion challenges some of the previous attempts to theorise return migration, which label return as emblematic of either success or failure.Show less

As a consequence of the complete lack of scrutiny of the integration component, this article demonstrates in which way and to what extent this assumption is true. This research includes the construction of a framework of indicators, in order to quantify the concept of integration, and it proposes a more efficient approach to the inevitably necessary reform of the Dublin Regulation. At the centre of this proposal, are the personal characteristics, as well as some of the preferences of the applicants.Show less

The thesis compares and contrasts rhetorical trends across parties and election cycles. In doing so, it shows the influence of populist politics on mainstream politics. It concludes that all three mainstream parties VVD, CDA and PvdA have used PGAIR as a rhetorical tool since 2000. An increase in use could be linked to the rise in popularity of anti-immigrant populist rhetoric in the Netherlands.Show less

A comparative analysis of the official websites of various kinds of cities, towns and villages not only serves to highlight some of the stark and surprising differences in their online integration efforts. A consideration of specific factors in the analysis, such as economic power, administrative authority, relative migrant population size and City Network membership, also allows for a more in depth exploration of some of the underlying social, political and economic reasons as to why some localities provide substantially better online multilingual provisions than others.Show less

Several factors, such as environmental concerns and depleting deposits of fossil-fuels, have made the European Union and its member-states decide that in order to secure accessible, cheap and stable electricity, new sources of energy are required. The premise of this article is that past and contemporary European integration in energy policies is built upon energy security in correlation with the specific characteristics of fossil-fuels. The result is a unique combination of international cooperation and national sovereignty which needs to be identified and understood. Therefore, this article will first of all identify past European energy policies based on fossil-fuels. These are the founding documents of the European Coal and Steel Community and the European response to the 1973 oil crisis. These events will be followed by an analysis of EU-wide energy policies in recent year. In the following chapter, several forms of energy which can act as a substitute to fossil-fuels in the EU will be analysed, to precisely define what their specific characteristics are and how they can potentially be used to reduce dependency on fossil-fuels. When this is done, the three case-studies of the Netherlands, Sweden and Bulgaria will serve as a description of how states are currently approaching the transition to renewable sources of electricity, and what kind of problems and limitations they identify. The decision has been made to identify three individual states instead of the EU as a whole because of the fact that each state is in a unique position and is therefore deserving of an individual analysis. This study is relevant because in contemporary academic literature, the topics of European integration in energy policies and renewable energy is often overlooked. Most experts either focus on identifying European policies or the technical aspects of renewable energy, but they are seldom combined. This is problematic because it is almost certain that an increased reliance on renewable energy will have profound effects on societies in EU-member states and on the way the EU is integrated regarding energy policies. The question is therefore not if there is a connection between European integration and renewable sources of electricity, but how the transition to renewable sources in electricity generation influences European Integration within the field of energy cooperation. This article is meant to form as a basis for further research in the connection between the transition to renewable sources of energy and European integration and will therefore be a combination of a description and an analysis.Show less
