This study aimed to examine the possible mediating influence of self-esteem on the relationship between perceived parental support and adolescent DSH, correcting for the effects of age, gender, traumatic life events, and substance use. A cross-sectional self-report questionnaire was used to collect data from Dutch high school students between the age of 14 and 18 (Age M = 15.26 years; SD = .74) from various regions throughout the Netherlands. Of the 4,171 adolescents whose data were analyzed, 552 indicated having engaged in DSH in the past. Results showed a direct effect of parental support on DSH occurrence, as well as an indirect effect via self-esteem. Therefore, the results of this study suggest the relationship between parental support and DSH to be partly mediated via self-esteem. These results support the idea that parents play an important role in adolescent DSH and suggest the importance of involving parents when implementing prevention interventions for adolescent DSH.Show less

Literature suggests that subjective career success in influenced by ability-related constructs, such as mindset and work self-efficacy. Current study investigated the interplay between mindset, work self-efficacy, and subjective career success. The sample of working adults based in the United Kingdom (N = 190) completed Dweck Mindset Instrument, Subjective Career Success Inventory, and Work Self-Efficacy Scale online. Linear regressions showed that mindset did not predict subjective career success while work self-efficacy did. Mediation analysis was non-significant, suggesting that the relationship between mindset and subjective career success was not mediated by work self-efficacy. Exploratory moderation analysis showed that mindset did not significantly moderate the relationship between work self-efficacy and subjective career success. Further theoretical and practical implications are discussed.Show less

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically altered the user experience of cultural heritage and, in order to communicate a selective narrative of its artworks to its users, The Rijksmuseum created a Tiktok account. Due to the adaptation, several questions have been raised with regards to the aura and experience of artwork, and how this is altered in an online setting, an environment where images circulate at a fast pace. This thesis aims to cover Haidy Geismar’s methodology surrounding object materiality as well as her discussion of the break away from the ‘white cube’ museum setting. In addition to discussing David Joselit’s ideas regarding the circulation of digitized objects and the ‘buzz’ of the image. These key concepts will be discussed in relation to Jan Asselijn’s ‘De Bedreigde Zwaan’, and its online presence; this is the key case study of this thesis. Overall, this thesis aims to discuss how the use of Tiktok as a platform mediates this key Golden Age artwork and how this effects its meaning and interpretation.Show less

In chapter 1, I will use Johan Huizinga's ideas on sport and play from Homo Ludens to prove that before we can speak of any changes brought about by commercialization, this relation must be accounted for nondualistically. In chapter 2, I will use Gadamer’s non-dualistic ontology of play and spectator that he develops in Truth and Method to prove that the spectator opens a possibility for play to transform into art, where, when the transformation is fully realized, the relation between play and spectator becomes one of “aesthetic non-differentiation”. I will also show that the proof of such a transformation having taken place in the case of football, hinges on a “perception of a meaningful whole” on the part of the spectator. In chapter 3, I will prove the existence of such a perception, by looking at the language of 'justice' surrounding football and I will prove also that these utterances point to a blockage in the transformation. In chapter 4, I will find the source of this blockage in commodification of football and its transformation into a spectacle.Show less

Conflict management and mediation literature consists of extensive work on both Cyprus and Northern Ireland. Yet, the role of external actors and kin-states in peacemaking in both cases are understudied. By showing the importance of a superpower third party intervention, this thesis provides theoretical and policy insights on conflict management. Contrary to the general argument on the importance of impartiality of mediation, this study argues that powerful states, due to their coercive capacity and power, have an increased chance of success in peace negotiations. Furthermore, regardless of impartiality, it is found that the more proximity (cultural, political, and economic ties) the third party has with the parties involved, the more likely it is to have the leverage necessary to achieve a concession.Show less

Using the South China Sea situation as an example, I will argue that first, the EU needs to mend internal divisions and construct a detailed foreign policy, supported by all its Member States.Show less

Recent research has shown that psychopathy is associated with many risk factors. Important associated risk factors are ethnic background and having police contacts. According to several studies, ethnic background is an important risk factor for developing psychopathy, whereas psychopathy is a risk factor for police contacts. The role of psychopathic traits as a mediator between ethnic background and police contacts is researched. In the research, 390 twelve to eighteen year-olds with a Dutch or Moroccan ethnic background cooperated, of which 210 had a Dutch background and 180 a Moroccan background. Eight prevocational education schools (“vmbo”) and one secondary vocational education (“mbo”) school (1st grade) cooperated in the research. The participants filled out questionnaires. To measure the interaction between ethnic background, psychopathic traits and contact with the police, logistic regression is applied. There is a significant relation between psychopathic traits and police contacts. Participants with more psychopathic traits are more likely to have police contacts. The relations between ethnic background and police contacts, ethnic background and psychopathic traits could not be confirmed in this study. There is no significant difference between participants with a Dutch or Maroccan ethnic background in relation to psychopathic traits, nor in relation to police contacts. No mediation model was found, as the relation between ethnic background and contact with the police, controlled for psychopathic traits, is not significant. It can thus be concluded that psychopathic traits is an important factor, however it cannot explain the relationship between ethnic background and contact with the police.Show less

This combination hinders cooperation over the communal resource and makes trans-boundary river basins areas of conflict. To resolve such conflicts, the involvement of a third party mediator with the capabilities to offer incentives to reluctant riparians, coupled with the creation of a management institution to address conflicts as they arise, offers the best means of addressing both the short term issues of getting states to agree to a cooperative arrangement for the river and the long term commitment problems that would lead states to renege on the agreement. This thesis will explore the utility of the combined short and long-term approach to mediate trans-boundary river conflicts by examining the mediation and resolution of the Indus River conflict between India and Pakistan. The lessons learned are then used to investigate the unresolved conflict between Turkey, Syria, and Iraq over the Euphrates and Tigris rivers and offer ways of managing the conflict.Show less
