The group first emerges as a network of prisoners denouncing collectively to the violence of the prison system in Brazil. In this sense, this study analyses the PCC as a violent collective action, rather than a criminal organisation by taking into account the prison context in Brazil. To reach a conclusion, this study combines theories on social identity of intergroup conflict and protracted social conflict in order to understand the development and motivations of the PCC.Show less
