To understand why JB symptoms...Show moreJob Burnout (JB) is a demanding syndrome that leaves employees exhausted and dealing with cognitive and emotional problems, with symptoms lasting up to 10 years. To understand why JB symptoms pertain for so long, different resource theories were integrated to investigate the impact of JB on an individual gain process between job resources, personal resources, and recovery gained through physical exercise. It was predicted that skill discretion (SD), a common job resource, increases the personal resource self-efficacy (SE) which, in turn, enhances the recovery gained from physical exercise. This gain process was proposed to be dampened by JB, leaving employees with higher JB symptoms in a less advantageous position for resource gain as compared to those with lower symptoms. Using longitudinal data across three workweeks, self-report questionnaires were administered among full-time employees (N = 163). Although correlations revealed that the proposed relationships were found at specific weeks, hierarchical regression analyses revealed no across-time relationships, meaning no weekly gain process could be identified between SD, SE, and recovery gained through exercise. In addition, against expectations, no negative impact of JB on the gain process was found. Thus, the exact relationships between job resources, personal resources, recovery gained through exercise, and JB remain unclear. Future research is needed to further investigate these relationships preferably by using a different time lag than one week and by applying different roles of personal resources within the Job Demands-Resources framework.Show less

How can a psychiatrist do justice to a patient who, as an individual human being, asks for his help? Referring to Levinas’ philosophy of ethics I claim that diagnostic-psychiatrists fail to acknowledge the singularity of the patient. Recovery-psychiatrists seem to act in line with Levinas’ philosophy of ethics with his focus on singularity. However, analyzing the relation of the psychiatrist and the patient using Derrida’s philosophy of hospitality, I conclude that the recovery-psychiatrist has to accept that, while aspiring a moral relationship with the patient, is bound to use his medical knowledge as well. Knowledge that has to be evaluated constantly in the light of the appeal to do justice to alterity.Show less

Due to cognitive impairments and experienced stigma, the...Show moreBackground: Patients with a psychotic disorder generally seem to have difficulties recovering, especially on functional and societal ground. Due to cognitive impairments and experienced stigma, the psychosis population feel excluded from society as a result of discrimination. This study aimed to get a better insight of functional and societal recovery and their association amongst patients with a psychotic disorder. In addition, it was investigated whether degree of importance regarding social roles had a moderating effect on the association. Functional recovery lacked consensus on terminology and assessments, but this study used executive functioning as a point of reference. Societal recovery was described as counteracting the public stigma on mental illness and improving the position and rights of (ex-)clients within society. Methods: This study included 237 participants (18-65 years) with psychosis as their main diagnosis through Flexible Assertive Community Treatment teams or Early Intervention Psychosis teams in healthcare institutions throughout the Netherlands. Participants signed informed consent prior participating in the study. The study design was cross-sectional, where data at baseline was used for the analyses. The data was gathered through (self-reported) questionnaires that measured executive functioning (functional recovery), and satisfaction scores on fulfilling various social roles (societal recovery). Two multiple linear regression analyses were performed to assess whether the level of executive functioning was associated with satisfaction scores. A binary logistic regression was performed to assess executive functioning in employment. Results: No effects were found between self-reported executive functioning and satisfaction scores. The degree of importance regarding social roles was found to have a direct relationship with satisfaction scores. Surprisingly, self-reported executive functioning did not seem to be associated with employment. Conclusion: Functional and societal recovery were not related and degree of importance regarding social roles was directly related to societal recovery. Self-reported executive functioning did not differ amongst those who were employed and unemployed. A better consensus on terminology and measurements needs to be realized for functional and societal recovery to acquire a better assessment of the psychosis population. The theory of Pierre Bourdieu was used to analyze the difficulty of elderly to recover on a social level from disasters by looking at the amount of social capital that elderly might have before the disaster and what social capital they could lose as a result of that. It appears that the elderly do not necessarily have more difficulty to recover socially from a disaster because of the amount of social capital they generally possess. This forms a contrast with the general stereotypes of the elderly.Show less

With the...Show moreAt the time of writing almost five years have passed since Japan's triple disaster on March 11th 2011, when an earthquake triggered a tsunami which in turn triggered a nuclear crisis. With the initial shock having passed, how are people looking back at it? How have the tragic events that transpired settled into history, into national consciousness, into victims’ personal memories? Although on the grander national and global scales 3.11 is all but forgotten and being digested in the background, for most of the victims this disaster is still affecting daily life in numerous ways. The question this thesis focuses on is: What exactly has been disrupted through this disaster on a social level; how do communities and individuals that have been abruptly uprooted by a nuclear disaster cope; how do they reconstruct their collective and individual memories and identities; and how do they reframe nuclear energy, something that initially brought them prosperity but eventually led to them losing their homes indefinitely. This thesis analyzes the case of a specific uprooted nuclear host community, using documentary films as source material. The following discussion shows that a firmly rooted and once proud community has all but fallen apart, and their entire shared narrative, central to their collective identity, is shattered. Individual cases prove that there are many different ways in which memory is bound to either a place, people, or objects. Where the highest importance is placed is an individual issue that depends on the person and the context, and how flexible they deem their own identity. As a result some evacuees move on and some remain with the core community, hoping to return to their hometown someday, even though it seems unlikely to be possible within their lifetime. Further links between individuals and collective memory are discussed.Show less
