Through a comparative case study of Italy's operation Mare Nostrum and Frontex led Operation Triton, this thesis seeks to highlight the underlying processes involved in taking action in emergencies. This will be done through an interdisciplinary approach, by using Latané and Darley's (1970) socio-psychological model of the Unresponsive Bystander. Through this model, it becomes then possible to analyse why in certain circumstances emergencies are more addresses in humanitarian terms and sometimes more through a securitised approach.Show less

Especially when dealing with the refugee crisis, the European Union and member states have taken a strong stance towards border management and operational security, mainly based on the state security model. This approach has been deemed controversial, especially in the case of the Central Mediterranean Corridor, due to the consequences it has had, and still currently has on the safety of those attempting to cross the sea. Moreover, in order to show the origin and further complications this approach has, the Central Mediterranean Corridor will be analyzed as case study, and the colonial past between Italy and Libya, main destination and transit countries of this corridor, will be investigated. The research carried out in this paper aims to question this approach and to show the fallouts it has on the security of humans. By analyzing stipulated policies and said fallouts, this research will show how the state security model is obsolete when dealing with the refugee crisis, and it will present an alternative framework for migratory policies, embodied in the human security model.”Show less

Through the many challenges and setbacks the union has experienced the past decades it has demonstrated how unification and cooperation has become increasingly important. This study argues how in this process of globalized consolidation solidarity plays a vital role. Communities such as the EU rely to a large extent on all its member states involved willing to be solidary. The aim of this study has been to find justification for demonstrating solidarity during the refugee crisis of 2015/2016. This has been done by examining Dutch media and interviewing Dutch government officials. Upon examination of the sources, it became clear that the failures of the most important EU asylum regulations were due to a lack of solidarity. The theory of intergovernmentalism demonstrated how states preferred applying their own national regulations instead of following the supra-national EU policies. By applying the theories of instrumental and normative solidarity this study was able to grasp an idea of what is vital to improve in order to increase solidarity in the union. Focusing on the self-interest of the member states within the union is vital in order to stimulate solidarity. The member state should be well informed of why it is beneficial to be part of the EU. In addition, the union should focus on further developing a European identity among its residents in order to improve the feeling of solidary.Show less
