State intervention in the market has long been considered irrelevant, irreprehensible, or unsuccessful, but the recent crises, including the pandemic, have boosted its name amongst policymakers across the world. However, the academic literature on industrial policies within comparative political policy literature is still lacking, and would benefit from more research. Taking an exploratory comparative approach, this thesis research variations of industrial policies related to the management of lithium-ion battery value chains in the United States and the European Union. Several researchers have observed different types policies that have been put forward by policymakers to strengthen global value chains, but these analyses have been lacking a strong link with theoretical frameworks on industrial policy and policy instrument literature. This research fills the gap by linking academic literature on industrial policy, value chain resilience, and policy instruments analysis to provide constructive insights into existing policy proposals and documents. This thesis finds a strong link between the historical preferences of governments in industrial policy mixes and the specific policies put forward to strengthen lithium-ion value chains. It indicates that, although resilience policies of the United States and the European Union are in line with industrial policy in other areas, there are shifts in the instrument mix that warrant future research to improve our understanding of industrial policy in the twenty-first century.Show less

Internalized homonegativity (IH) and attachment style (AS) are connected, and secure AS and resilience are positively correlated. IH was found to be a risk factor and an insecure AS is a risk factor for IH, whereas a secure AS would be a protective factor. The present study investigates whether the relationship between attachment style and resilience is moderated by internalized homonegativity in SMI. Data was collected via an online survey using self-report measures from SMI adults (n = 241) that measured the variables of AS, IH, and resilience. The following hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analyses: (H1) individuals with a positive self-model and positive other-model (overall secure attachment) in combination with low levels of internalized homonegativity predict resilience, (H2) the relationship between AS was moderated by IH. The results showed no statistically significant effect of IH and MOS in any model, meaning that (H1) is rejected. Furthermore, no interactions were significant, meaning no moderation effect, and therefore, (H2) is rejected. There were no changes in significance when Model 1, 2, and 4 were tested with and without outliers. However, there were significant changes when Model 3 was tested without outliers; from significant to nonsignificant. The author concludes that this is a good model of resilience but the low variance of the sample cannot show that the model was a good fit. Further research should focus on protective factors and their influence on psychological wellbeing in SMI populations.Show less

NSSI has become one of the most concerning behaviors in young people, and having experienced childhood adversity increased the risk of NSSI. Therefore, it is important to find protective factors against NSSI in young people with a history of childhood adversity. This thesis looked into the interaction between resilient functioning, friendship quality, and NSSI, and investigated if resilient functioning and friendship quality could reduce NSSI in young people with a history of childhood adversity. 72 young people, aged 16-26 years, who were exposed to childhood adversity before the age of 16 years were included in the study. They were asked to fill out online assessments about psychosocial functioning, childhood adversity history, friendship quality, and NSSI. The results showed that higher resilient functioning was related with a greater tendency of NSSI, and higher friendship quality was associated with a lower tendency of NSSI in young people with a history of childhood adversity. The relationship between resilient functioning and NSSI was not moderated by the friendship quality. Friendship is an important factor to buffer the negative effect of childhood adversity and reduce NSSI in young people. It can be valuable to add friendship in the intervention related to NSSI in young people with a history of childhood adversity.Show less

The “Hold me Tight” program (HmT), an emotionally focused couples’ therapy, aims at strengthening the couple bond by targeting attachment needs. In this study, we apply the HmT program to presymptomatic HD gene mutation carriers and their partners. To this end, we included 15 couples in a stepped wedge design using 3 baselines of varying length and 17 measurements in total. Our intervention consisted of 4 sessions spanning over 4 weeks, with measurements before, during, and after the intervention. We assessed relationship satisfaction and wellbeing self-report measures on a weekly basis, while resilience data was assessed at the beginning and the end only, and attachment style was assessed only at the beginning. We conducted a multi-level model on the data. Over the course of the study, wellbeing (𝑏 = −0.0075, 𝑝 = .001) and relationship satisfaction (𝑏 = 0.31, 𝑝 < .0001) improved, but resilience did not. Furthermore, all three outcome measures were moderated by secure attachment style. In conclusion, HmT improved the wellbeing and relationship satisfaction of couples with a future of Huntington’s Disease. Due to the improvements in these measures and high patient acceptability rates, we think this intervention could become a standardized procedure in regular HD care.Show less

Even to this day, the island has been overgrown by a very disproportionate amount of U.S. military bases and personnel. This comes with a lot of tension and friction which have frequently resulted in protests by the Okinawan people. Music is a strong form of protest, which has been the case in Okinawa as well. Providing a combination of resistance and resilience towards the U.S. military bases through messages that appeal on a different level than regular narratives, makes music an interesting aspect of culture to consider in this protest against the world's most powerful countries.Show less

There was a fear that the economic turmoil would also severely impact Latin American countries, which had already experienced several crises in recent decades. However, what baffled many experts was how Latin America reacted to the crisis of 2008. Contrary to the reservations of the experts, Latin America emerged from the crisis with only limited damage. In this paper, the impacts of the crisis and the regions reaction to the economic contraction will be analysed in the context of Mexico and Brazil. The aim is to compare the two countries to establish a thorough understanding of the crisis and its country specific implication while providing an answer to the surprising economic resilience of Latin American countries.Show less
