Tegelijkertijd is sinds de jaren 60 zowel de islam als algemene spiritualiteit buiten de muren van gevestigde religieuze instituten sterk gegroeid. Nederland is divers, de vraag is dan, is er 'iets' dat de Nederlandse samenleving bijeenbrengt. En kan dit 'iets' een Civil Relgion genoemd worden? Vanuit sociologische methodologie, aan de hand van literatuuronderzoek over Rousseau's, Durkheim's en Bellah's werken over Civil Religion, en kwantitatief casusonderzoek tracht dit onderzoek deze vraag te beantwoorden. Dit onderzoek leidt tot de conclusie dat Nederland daadwerkelijk een Civil Religion heeft. Rousseau's visie komt tot leven in de vorm van burgerschapsvorming onderwijs op de basis- en middelbare scholen in Nederland. Durkheims sociale kijk op Civil Religion kan teruggevonden worden op de verbondenheid die Nederlanders voelen bij het uitdragen van gedeelde sociale rituelen.Show less

In the literature, however, it is often treated as such, mostly because the alternative of direct democracy is deemed unfeasible. In this thesis, I approach this issue based on the fundamental critique of representation as made by Rousseau, according to which democracy and representation are mutually exclusive, and representative democracy thus a contradiction in terms. I compare Rousseau’s position, supported by a more modern argument by Hanna Pitkin, to an attempt by modern authors in defending representation, which started with David Plotke. I support Plotke’s ideas with those put forward by Nadia Urbinati and Mark Warren, and also look at a more extreme position as argued by Frank Ankersmit. Comparing these positions to the critique by Rousseau and Pitkin, it becomes clear that defence of representation is lacking democratic justification that can withstand Rousseau’s fundamental critique. Finally, I discuss a potentially strong argument at providing such a justification, based on arguments by Laura Montanaro and Clarissa Hayward, which emphasizes the constructive role that representation plays in the shaping of people’s interests. Until the representative turn provides a substantial argument that people do not have politically relevant interests prior to representation, I argue, Rousseau’s critique remains intact, and we need to be more careful in ascribing democratic properties to representative systems.Show less

In deze periode kreeg Nederland te maken met revolutie, een nieuw politiek bestel, democratische instituties en een reeks grondwetten. Voor het eerst werd het volk aangewezen als de grondwetgevende macht onder het leerstuk van de volkssoevereiniteit. Voor het eerst werd er in een openbaar en gelegitimeerd lichaam gesproken over de democratische beginselen die tegenwoordig algemeen goed zijn in onze samenleving. Maar op basis van welke grondslagen of overwegingen kwamen de Bataafse politici tot de keuze het ontwerp voor te leggen aan de bevolking? In dit onderzoek wordt het het antwoord gevonden in Rousseaus leerstuk van het Contrat Social en het constitutioneel referendum als de wijze om het maatschappelijk verdrag te verbinden.Show less

There is also no gainsaying the fact that he had countless ...Show moreIt is simply undeniable that Jean-Jacques Rousseau played his vital part inspiring the world to modernisation, including China. There is also no gainsaying the fact that he had countless ‘apprentices’ in late Qing China, and apparently many Chinese intellectual elites during that period thought so as well. In the field of literature, Émile, ou de l'éducation inspired Chinese intellectual circle, especially realms of literature and publication, and stirred up a trend of ‘novel of education’. In addition, Rousseau’s writings and his image frequently appeared in the new-styled prints in late Qing China. Yet if we make a general survey of Chinese history evolving towards the point of modernisation and afterwards, the course of history in China was essentially advancing forward in its own way. All in all, I will claim that the interpretation, misinterpretation and internalisation of Rousseau’s thoughts in China was a highly complex progress. The new community of modern intellectuals in late Qing China took and adapted what they needed from Rousseau without pursuing Rousseau’s original intention, and such tendency and the transformation of the men of knowledge themselves were underlain by both the macro framework of Chinese society and the internal development within Chinese society that had started several centuries before the Western impact.Show less

Dit impliceert dat je weet waar de perfectionering naar toe moet. Deze gedachte aan perfectie heeft zijn sporen achter gelaten in het humanisme. In het humanisme zie je almaar het idee terugkomen dat je kunt zeggen: “dit is echt menselijke, en dit niet”, “dit is hoe de natuur het met ons voor heeft” en “dit is de richting waar de mens naartoe moet”. Het humanisme veronderstelt te weten wat de mens is en de richting waarop hij zich dient te perfectioneren. Deze scriptie onderzoekt hoe de gedachte aan perfectionering speelt in de Nieuwe Tijd en wat de implicaties daarvan zijn voor het humanisme.Show less
